Disapointing
I read the Dutch version of this book and came away thoroughly underwhelmed. The plot was enjoyable, fast-paced and complex enough to keep me interested. If you told me it was a Dan Brown book I might have believed it. The problem with the book isn't the plot, though it's sometimes predictable. The huge problem is the characters or lack thereof. All characters are flat stereotypes that don't evolve, rarely have any back-story and lack any depth. The characters are means to an end. They are hooks on which the author tries to hang his plot but fails miserably. The main character, Don Titelman, is a huge tool who doesn't live, he's being lived by everybody around him and even though he's portrayed as a drug-addict, it still doesn't seem believable. There is no empathic connection with any of the characters since I can't understand their motivations. Very early on in the book, the second main character, Eva Strand, comes into play in some random, ridiculous fashion. A magic lawyer just shows up to help poor Don. It doesn't feel natural for Don to just accept her presence and for him to submit to her will from then on. It is too obvious that she's not just some lawyer, come to help him. The minute Don notices her wounds healing too fast, you know she's an agent for some organization and you're just frustrated with how long it takes Don to figure it out. The third big character, Elena, is the only one who evolves a tiny bit. But even then, it is very clear from the start what her role was meant to be. As soon as you find out about how she came to Vater, you know she's meant to betray him at some point. All the other characters are unimportant plot tools.
This isn't a novel. This is a plot for a low-budget action movie.
