I’m still pinching myself that I scored an interview with reknowned adult performer and sex work advocate, GoAskAlex, this week! GoAskAlex is an ostomate and if you don’t know what that term is, you’ll soon learn what that is on the show. After a life-changing surgery, she had a permanent medical device placed on her body. Due to the nature of our jobs and the use of our bodies, this one was near impossible to conceal. Alex shares her story of living with a disability and how she was able to live and incorporate her disability into her own sex work. We also dive into her advocacy work for underrepresented bodies in the adult industry, the severe lack of BIPOC sex workers in porn and the current arising problems she sees within the industry.

We're dipping into some heavier content today. I speak with sex trafficking survivor, burlesque dancer, and spiritual guide, London Bridges, on today's episode. I recently heard London's story on another well-known podcast but was shocked at the lack of sensitivity training that the hosts had when they interrogated her during her interview and the blatant disregard that was comment section on their Instagram. I was maddened by how so many people invalidated London's experience, claiming that trafficking only looks a certain way. It does not. Trafficking rears its ugly head in many different forms which we go over in depth during this episode and we go over London's story on how she was groomed and tricked via spirituality which ended up with her being trafficked by an abuser. I've got to say, I was a little nervous yet super excited to record this week's episode. I had a riveting conversation with Brussels-based, Espace P, a non-profit organization which helps and protects sex workers in Belgium. I got the opportunity to speak with their public relations representative, Quentin Deltour, to learn more about the organization, the history and who Espace P helps, and how much of a resource they are for sex workers based in Belgium. Although it is a small country, Belgium became the first European country to decriminalize sex work back in March of this year. We speak about the struggles that sex workers have experienced in Belgium, what this decision may mean and what will happen moving forward for sex workers and clients. What started as a seemingly harmless encounter with her then-boyfriend, turned into a nightmare. “Have you ever heard of OnlyFans?”, said her abuser. Little did she know what she would encounter and ensue over the next six months would have a hold on her life. We speak about warning signs and red flags, grooming, manipulation, how she was able to escape and flee, and what she would tell other victims in similar situations. It’s a riveting and raw episode and it might be advisable to break this episode into chunks as it was quite triggering.

I have been patiently awaiting for this episode to be released! Dr. Snow is an adjunct professor and researcher at NYU at the AI Now Institute and the UCLA Center for Critical Intelligence and as a sex worker, she understands the many discriminatory practices through artificial intelligence that major platforms and companies adopt to prevent sex workers from doing our jobs. Dr. Snow opens up about her current research, shares her thoughts on the recent acquisition of Twitter by Elon Musk and what that might mean for sex workers, and ways that artificial intelligence works in ways that do not allow us to thrive. It is a completely fascinating conversation (atleast for me!) that absolutely affects our livelihood and how we conduct business.

It’s not everyday that you can get a hold of one of the executives of one of the oldest adult tech platforms out there. I was lucky enough to catch up with Jay Kopita, Co-Owner and President of the adult industry platform, YNOT. I had recently attended one of Jay’s events and was so impressed by how welcoming the event was and had an overall great experience at my first ever adult-industry event. Jay had personally introduced himself to me and I knew I just had to get him on the show. His down to earthness was demonstrated during our hour-long conversation as I got to know how exactly he found himself in the adult industry, the challenges that he had buying the founder out, the struggles the adult industry faced in the 90s compared to now, and how he has navigated this huge ship of a platform! Having expanded the company to encompass numerous brands and events throughout the year, it was refreshing to learn just how many moving parts there are when running an enormous company and to hear from this executive-level perspective.

With so much emphasis on the trans community in recent times regarding gender affirming surgery and trans rights, I think it was time to have an overdue conversation with trans activist, Velvet Steele. Velvet is a longtime educator, advocate, SWer and icon in the queer community in Vancouver who I’ve been looking forward to having on the show. Velvet provides her crystal clear perspective on how language has shaped, impacted and harmed the community. Going from the past to present, we discuss problematic terms such as a sex reassignment surgery to outdated and offensive terms like “shemale” and how other buzzwords have discriminated and harmed the trans community. We speak about the importance in language and how its become more trans inclusive, shying away from terms we had once used in the past.
