This is the parable that Jesus told which explains our failed attempts at trying to mix the new with the old. The two will be in conflict with each other and end up causing greater harm. Whether we are trying to sew an unshrunk piece of cloth onto an old shrunk piece of cloth or mixing an old lifestyle with a new lifestyle, we will have tension.
Jesus is referencing the idea of becoming totally new when we come into following him. Doing away with our old ways and practicing new ways. When we try to "live the best of both worlds" we will find ourselves in conflict.
What old way do you need to cut out of your life in order to allow the new ways of Christ to flourish in your life?
“Jesus answered, “How can the guests of the bridegroom mourn while he is with them? The time will come when the bridegroom will be taken from them; then they will fast. “No one sews a patch of unshrunk cloth on an old garment, for the patch will pull away from the garment, making the tear worse. Neither do people pour new wine into old wineskins. If they do, the skins will burst; the wine will run out and the wineskins will be ruined. No, they pour new wine into new wineskins, and both are preserved.””
