Would your kids say your are mean? That's a loaded question! Maybe we could help clarify by defining words such as mean, strict, or permissive. These are often ways that our kids perceive us. The question then might be, which one is best? Or, is there even a better approach to your parenting?
This week Strong Dads dives into what effective parenting looks like especially from the dad. Research has revealed that our kids do not always know what is best for them. In fact, what they may think would be best for them in a given moment may be one of the most harmful things they could ever have in their lives. This is why we must understand what we, as Strong Dads, bring to the table of parenting.
Extremes towards any one of the three mentioned above is not longterm effective. But, a combination along with specific timing can go a long way towards raising strong and healthy adults.
Here's a thought to consider. Think about the things you are most proud of in your life. Did you receive them easily or did you have to work and sacrifice for them? Human nature is such that we value the things we work hard for. Things that cost us something are going to be treated differently than freebies. Your kids will greatly benefit if you can teach them the value of sweat equity, work ethic, and perseverance.
