Great book! Very historical with believable characters.
Strong Roads is an excellent book! As soon as I began reading it I felt as though I was on an old Spanish ship. The author describes all of the aspects of ship life in such detail, especially the adventures the young men have when they dock at various ports during their travels. Since this historical novel is told through the point-of-view of a young man, it shows his growth as he discovers the difficult life on a ship and as he comes to understand the complicated relationships between the various characters on board the ship. The reader can see the main character grow from a naive young man to a man who is worldly wise and mature. As a reader I felt like I was on an adventure because I didn't know anything about living on a ship prior to this read. I felt like I was learning history too because so much of the power of Spain at that time and the ship culture was obvious in every paragraph. And there was a lot of action and adventure. I have a real respect for the lives of young hired seamen who earn their living from living and working on ships, as a result of reading this novel. I realize that there is so much that goes into sailing a large vessel with many people living in close proximity for long periods of time, out in the middle of the ocean. At the end of this story, without giving the plot away, the young man (main character) makes wise choices.
All I can say is read it!
