a very well written novel, performed perfectly.
excellent focus on characters that comes through as authentic, especially for the time period
    Simply Beautiful!
This review from my page on Goodreads.
My first venture into a novel of Pamela's. (With the exception of several of her children's books) This was just a pure magical read. Loved it from start to finish.
I think what I liked most about it was how the story seemed to just flow so smoothly, and how it grew to a natural climax in its journey. It turned from hearing how Ruby coped being separated from her new husband Jimmy, who had gone off to War, and her reading his frequent love letters from the war-front, to becoming action packed in seemingly a heartbeat. It was rather simplistic in its writing, however done so magnificently well.
I adored seeing how Ruby changed and evolved simply due to the circumstances in which she found herself, and how her colleagues went from disbelieving and arguably suspicious of her, all because she was female, to an almost indispensable cog at her place of work as time went on.
Each character played a crucial role in this story, and most, if not all, were very likeable.
Pamela obviously spent quite some time researching, as it felt like I was there with Ruby, every step of the way. A rather nice little sidenote for me is that this is based from her family's history, and I think this came across in the writing of it... that said, she is one talented writer and story-teller and I'm sure all her work is as good as this!
One of my top reads of 2017, if not the very top of my list and I would have no hesitation in recommending this highly to lovers of historical fiction, and those who are fans of Australian fiction.
    It's alright

    Members Reviews:
Great book! Very historical with believable characters.
Strong Roads is an excellent book! As soon as I began reading it I felt as though I was on an old Spanish ship. The author describes all of the aspects of ship life in such detail, especially the adventures the young men have when they dock at various ports during their travels. Since this historical novel is told through the point-of-view of a young man, it shows his growth as he discovers the difficult life on a ship and as he comes to understand the complicated relationships between the various characters on board the ship. The reader can see the main character grow from a naive young man to a man who is worldly wise and mature. As a reader I felt like I was on an adventure because I didn't know anything about living on a ship prior to this read. I felt like I was learning history too because so much of the power of Spain at that time and the ship culture was obvious in every paragraph. And there was a lot of action and adventure. I have a real respect for the lives of young hired seamen who earn their living from living and working on ships, as a result of reading this novel. I realize that there is so much that goes into sailing a large vessel with many people living in close proximity for long periods of time, out in the middle of the ocean. At the end of this story, without giving the plot away, the young man (main character) makes wise choices.
All I can say is read it!

    Critic Reviews:
"One of Britain's most accomplished historical novelists. Her love and respect for the past shines through every page." (Sarah Dunant)

Young Bess, Queen Elizabeth in her youth.
I read this book eons ago and I remember loving it. This particular book I purchased for my niece who is getting interested in history. I remember that it left me thinking Elizabeth was softer than she really was, as I found out in later books. Granted because of all she had to go through she did turn out to be tough and strong. I admire her. Her mother, Anne Boleyn was also a strong woman. Now I understand why Queen Elizabeth had to kill Mary, Queen of Scots. This book is a good starter for reading about Elizabeth.
    Young Bess
This is the book written by Margaret Irwin, my favorite author after Elizabeth Chadwick on the third place. Here is the story of Young Elizabeth I, the Queen of England, the Queen who had never been married. A Virgin Queen, who had so many lovers, and adorers, but was an orphan. Here are her young years, when she had a friends and sisters, who helped to realize who she is. I would like to recommend the book everyone who is studying English history or interested in biography of Elizabeth I, the Queen of England.
An old novel on a young Tudor princess is still worth reading
Margaret Irwin's novel "Young Bess" is the first in a series of three books on the life of England's Queen Elizabeth I
(reigned 1558-1603). The Virgin Queen was a Gloriana but she
had a difficult childhood and adolescence. Her mother Anne Boleyn was executed by Bess's cruel father Henry VIII. She was
accused of bastardy and had a strained relationship with her
two siblings: Mary (daughter of Katharine of Aragon-Henry's
first wife) and Edward (son of Henry's wife Jane Seymour). Followng the death of Henry the land was ruled by the sickly Edward who had Protestant leanings. The 15 year old monarch died in 1553 followed by the prickly "Bloody Mary" whose short reign
led to the persecution and burning of Protestants.
This book takes us from Elizabeth's girlhood to the moment when Edward has died and the succession is in dispute. It deals
in depth with Bess's relationship with the Seymour family. Thomas Seymour loved Bess and wed Henry VIII's last queen Katharine Parr. He was executed for treason during the reign of
    Edward.
The book can be boring and seem old fashioned to those expecting garish desciptions of execution and vivid sexual scenes.
Irwin's style is rich and her prose sparkles. The book would most appeal to someone who has a basic knowledge of the Tudor
    dynasty.

    Terrible
I'm all for some indulgence in entertaining historical fiction, meaning I accept strange and unrealistic points of view for novels' protagonists in respect to their historic reality, and I even accept some nice black-and-white painting.
But this is just too much. The figures don't have any real conviction, the description of the historic background is absolutely terrible, and the story just does not work out.

    A Fine Historical Read
Sally Brinkmann is one of the best writers at work today and this is an excellent example of the magic she works. The historical detail is meticulous, the prose is smooth and craftsmanlike, the characters are real and believable, people you might well know, but caught up as they are in the horrors of the war between the states. The author keeps you turning the pages, but more importantly, she keeps you caring what happens to the people you get to know in her book. An exemplary bit of historical fiction, by a master of the genre.
elegant prose and people we care about kept me turning pages in this story of love and loss between river and mountain
The Civil War comes down home to Appalachia in this story of loyalty to place and people above causes and creeds. Spare, elegant prose and people we care about kept me turning pages in this story of love and loss between river and mountain.
... River and Mountain is a "good" read - I enjoyed it. The characters are interesting and well-rounded
Between River and Mountain is a "good" read - I enjoyed it. The characters are interesting and well-rounded, and the plot is engaging with surprise turns of events. The history of the Civil War in the Appalachian region has been little explored, and this novel adds to our understanding of events that unfolded there.

    Publisher's Summary:
One year after the Falklands War and the world seems a safer place. Unfortunately, 1983 is the year WW III almost happened. Staggeringly, it was only afterward that the truth came to light: that the Russians actually went to full nuclear alert and came so very close to starting Armageddon. To this day, most of the world's population know nothing about it.
Lieutenant Jonathon Hunt (Sea Skimmer) has been appointed to a commando helicopter squadron operating in Northern Norway. It is the height of the Cold War, and the Soviets have discovered a secret NATO submarine listening station hidden in the Arctic ice. They would like to do something about it but cannot come up with a method of attack until they decide on the use of an Ekranoplan. This massive machine, known to NATO as the "Caspian Monster", can get them in and out fast enough to give them the deniability they need. Caught up in events, Jon and his observer, Brian Pearce, find themselves flying a Sea King Mark 4 helicopter from HMS Illustrious to the ice in an attempt to stop the Soviets before tragedy occurs.
Based on real events of 1983, The Caspian Monster weaves a story around a year in history that most of the world slept through. This is the second book in the series following the career of Jon Hunt in the modern royal navy.

    Good read
I enjoyed this book very much. I have read his first one and happened to come across the fact there are others out, so I gave this one a try. Unlike many authors that write follow on books and find it hard to keep your interest this not the case with this one. I enjoyed this so much I am going on to number three.
    A gripping read
Obviously leaning on a great deal of personal expertise, and actual happenings, this is a gripping novel that keeps the pace going throughout. I look forward to the movie.
A window into past cold war events told through the eyes of some interesting, if amoral, characters. Well worth the Kindle download. I look forward to JC's next novel.
    a good read
Good story line with good characters. There is some poor grammar in places but if you can look past that you will not be disappointed with this book.
    ..very good !
Larry Jeram-Croft writes good novells, his second is outstanding.Very well done,an interesting story, good characters, logical, recommandable to read for fans of war fiction !
    Good easy to read yarn
I read his first book about the Falklands purely by accident but I could not wait to read the next one. There is action and humour in the stories that are very much service life at the time.

    Publisher's Summary:
In the aftermath of World War I, a family estate hangs in the balance.
For generations, the Barthélemy family tended to the olive trees of Restanques, a sprawling property in Cotignac whose olive oil and almonds were as incredible as the countryside that produced them. But all that changed when war came to France. Robert Barthélemy never returned from the trenches, and without him the farm is beginning to die. His widow has lost the will to live, and only the fierce efforts of their daughter, Jeanne, have kept the creditors at bay.
Jeanne is spending an afternoon at home with the family's grim financial statements when a handsome stranger appears on the front steps. His name is Jérôme Guillaumin, and he is a brilliant botanist about to embark on a journey around the globe. From the moment they meet, Jeanne is struck by feelings she never thought possible: feelings that could save her life or destroy everything she has ever known.
    Members Reviews:
It was a delightful read, a really enjoyable trip on the estate and in the life of Jeanne.
    4.5 stars
It was a delightful read, a really enjoyable trip on the estate and in the life of Jeanne. It 'a family saga that take places after the end of WWI.
Four generations of Barthélemys had lived in Restanques, the wonderful estate near the village of Corignac, in Provence. Now they risk losing everything. Robert, Jeanne's father, died in the war and her wife fell in a strong depression and does not care if their property is in ruins. Laurent, Jeanne's brother, prefer to travel and study botany than cure olive and almond trees of the family. So Jeanne is alone to manage their wonderful business. And it's really hard. Will she be able to save Restanques? Will she have the chance to discover true love or work will prevent her?
Jeanne is a great characters, is ready to do anything to save her property. She's brave, determined, strong, forced to fight against the debt but especially against the selfishness of her mother and her brother, too focused on themselves .
I love the atmosphere of this book, the author makes some wonderful descriptions of the campaign: its colors, its scents, fruits, local markets. It makes you really feel like going to visit this estate.
I appreciated very much the choice of the author to use an omniscient narrator, it was possible to know the story from the point of view of all the characters, it was really exciting.
It's the first book I read of this author but I like her style and certainly read something else.
It was a compelling historical novel, the pace is not fast but the setting and the characters are loveable. It's well written and was a real treat.
    I definitely recommend this one.
I received an advance reader edition of this book from publisher via NetGalley for the purpose of providing an honest review.
A snapshot of life in Provence following the First World War
This novel is set in the years directly after the First World War and as well beautiful descriptions of itâs Provencal setting and the olive and almond tree orchards, that conjured up perfect pictures in my mind, there was lots of historical interest added in as well.
