    Publisher's Summary:
The intrepid band of warriors, led by Captain James Keane, have been given their toughest job yet by Wellington.
Both the British and French armies have retreated from the old university city of Coimbra, leaving it in ruins, the inhabitants destitute and the houses full of wounded from all sides. Infiltrating the streets are the Spanish guerrilla fighters who may support either side, the local Portuguese determined to avenge the horrors inflicted upon their city and the rival spies and intelligence agents determined to find the book of ciphers, hidden in the famous library of Coimbra, guarded by a dissident Jesuit group.
James Keane and his men are sent into the midst of this not only to prevent the book falling into enemy hands but also to discover which of the guerrilla groups are to be trusted and supported by the British. But does this mean following their own plans, mostly concentrated on finding Massena's gold, over Wellington's orders?
James Keane and his band of brothers are a great creation and the story of a city in a warzone with no frontiers has remarkable echoes of other times.

    another great book.
    A Gripping Historical Charge!
This delightful book is the 3rd volume of the excellent James Keane series.
The book contains a well documented historical note at the end of the book, with quite some clear explanations about certain military decisions and actions, while at the beginning of the book you'll find a well-drawn map of Portugal into which this story refers to.
Storytelling is of a very good quality, for the author has made it possible to let the tale flow in an exciting and enjoyable manner, while at the same time his characters are very believable and they come wonderful to life within this excellent story.
The tale itself is set in the year AD 1810, during the Peninsular War that was fought between Britain and France of the Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte.
In this period of war General Wellington has to fight not only factions and in-fighting in Whitehall, but he has also a formidable enemy in Marshal Massena, who Wellington has to defeat if he wants to achieve his goal on Portuguese soil and fame in England and its Government.
Within this turmoil of this particular war, James Keane and his men have to infiltrate behind the lines of the enemy, before being able to supply General Wellington of the necessary intelligence to ensure him of the chance of that important victory over the French, while at the same time having to search and locate an invaluable book of ciphers in Coimbra.
And so James Keane and his men not only have to fight off different kind of factions, from either within or without, but also of layers of deceit and deceptions, whether they are spies or local fighters if they want to succeed in their mission by finding that invaluable book of ciphers without also getting distracted and involved by the trail of Massena's gold.
Surely recommended, for this book is really "A Gripping Historical Charge"!

    i totally enjoyed this book.
Jean Plaidy should be famous. She's a fantastic writer. I've read 72 of her books so far. Yes, I am counting and blogging about it - http://bit.ly/18svseH .
It's not high brow literature but it's not trash either. It's probably on a high school reading level. As a middle aged urbanite with a graduate degree who reads The New Yorker, i thoroughly enjoyed it. It's gossip-y and drama-packed. A page turner. It kept me up all night 2 nights in a row - it messed with my sleeping schedule - because I could not stop reading it.
I confess that I never studied the french revolution in school. This book and the 2 before it in Plaidy's FR series have sparked my interest in it and I am doing some self-education on it.

A great little read - and one more reason British authoress Eleanor Hibbert (writing here as Jean Plaidy) sold over 100 million books in 20 languages.

    Good book!
Are the most tragic figures the only ones remembered?
Poor Marie Antoinette! She was the wrong person in the wrong place in the wrong time. She grew up in the virtuous court of the Hapsburgs and married into that of scandalous France. There, she found a shy husband, admirers, but mostly enemies. Eventually, the King died, and she and Louis became rulers of France. The people were ready to admire the new king and queen, especially when the new rulers declared France would be great. Fueled by power hungry men and women, the people's love soon turned to hate as the people' became poorer and the aristocracy followed Marie Antoinette's lead and became more extravagant. She didn't understand how her foolishness would lead to downfall until it was too late. Things spiraled out of control, and before they knew it, the royal family was prisoners in the hands of their own subjects. And everyone knows the fate of Marie Antoinette after this: the guillotine.
While I was reading this book, I was impatient to finish it, because I wanted to read another one. Even under these circumstances, Jean Plaidy's work never ceased to lose its richness. She is a great author, even to the impatient reader.
    Good!
This historical novel about Marie Antoinette is very enjoyable. I picked up the book being interested in Marie Antoinette and looking to find out more about her life. The book follows her from the time her wedding to Louis XVI is announced to her death. It is well written with a good pace. It shows well the different sides of her personality and how while she was obviously disconnected from the reality, at the end of her life she remained a humble yet proud person.
I recommend this book to anyone wanting to familiarize themselves with the life of Marie Antoinette and who look for a historically acurate yet enterntaining account of her life.

The sequel to the stunning novel The Illusionists, from the best-selling author of The Kashmir Shawl.
Born into a theatrical background, Nancy Wix is not a woman to be held back by family or class. At a young age, she discovers clairvoyant abilities that will change her whole life - from a boating accident that leaves three strangers dead to visions of the Great War to come, Nancy strives to change her fate.
When she meets an enigmatic and handsome young man, an opportunity arises to escape the life she seems destined to lead - but can she rely on a man who leads a double life, or must she look inside herself to break free?
Daughter of the House is a superb slice of early 20th-century life, from prewar suffragette movement through the shell-shocked suffering of post-war Britain through the age of spiritualism, the roaring '20s and beyond.
    Members Reviews:
    A strange blend of genres
Daughter of the House continues the tale of Devil and Eliza, stage illusionists and owners of the illustrious Palmyra theatre in turn of the century London (the first part of their story can be found in The Illusionists). Daughter of the House focuses on the life of their daughter Nancy, as she grows up on the outskirts of polite society due to the family profession, sought after by men of means as a partner due to her wit and character, but never as a wife.
Although Nancy's love interests are a main focus of the novel, in a similar way to The Illusionists the book seems to straddle several genres - romance, period piece, supernatural. It is the last aspect which is developed far more in this novel than the first, where Devil dismisses mediums and spirits as trickery. In this novel, Nancy is found to have the gift, and uses this to become a successful stage medium, though sometimes with tragic consequences.
The novel begins with a shocking accident which impacts on events throughout the rest of the novel and threatens to cause great harm to the protagonist as those affected seek to use Nancy to reach out to their lost loved ones. Alongside these sinister events, Nancy's relationships provide the other main story strand.
Although I enjoyed the novel, there was a definite feeling at the end that the story was unfinished, leaving the listener a little dissatisfied. Neither aspect of Nancy's life feels resolved, so I assume a third novel will be forthcoming!
    Fabulous!
I have read everything written by Rosie Thomas and have not been disappointed by her two latest novels - read The Illusionists before Daughter of the House as they are sequential. The setting of late nineteenth and early twentieth century theatrical London is absolutely authentic and the characters interesting and engaging. I hope there may be a third story to come! (The narrator is superb too!)
    entertaining and well written
the story drew you in and the characters were generally well drawn. the uncanny was represented well without hyperbole. an unusual novel.
    The reluctant medium
Set in the early part of the 20th century - starting before WWI and ending prior WW2 this is a book that explores the disappearing world of variety (something that I've always found somewhat sad), emerging women's rights and spiritualism. I found it quite hard to get involved with the story at the very beginning but by the time chapter 2 came I was hooked - and was very sad to have to say goodbye to the characters at the end.

AD 448. The Roman Empire is crumbling. The Emperor is weak. Politicians scheme, and ambitious generals vie for power. Then, from the depths of Germany arises an even darker threat: Attila, King of the Huns, determined to crush Rome once and for all.
In a time of danger and deception, three young people dream that Rome can be made great once more. But they find themselves forced to survive in a world more deadly than any of them could have imagined.
    Members Reviews:
    Entertaining and slightly educational
    Any additional comments?
This is a historical novel set mostly in Gaul in the fifth century when the western empire of Rome was collapsing. It gives a very good feel for the politics of the decline. It also feels authentic in the details of Roman life as well as the wider historical context.
The dialogue at times has a hint of juvenility about it, the characters are largely black and white, and the behaviour of the leaders and generals is driven rather more by talk of "honour" than I suspect one would have seen in real Romans. All of this creates a feeling of a teenage or young adult novel. Taking it in that spirit, I read with enthusiasm and enjoyed it from beginning to end.

A Holocaust survivor fights a Nazi conspiracy in the jungles of Brazil. In 1939, Erick Von Roesler was spreading Hitler's gospel in Brazil when duty to the Reich called him home. He distinguished himself during the war, organizing slave labor camps, overseeing executions, and manning the gas chambers of Buchenwald, but in 1945 he felt it necessary to leave the land of his birth. His enthusiasm for the German cause undimmed, he returned to South America to remake the continent in the image of the fallen Reich. For help, he called on Hans Busch, a master propagandist who came south from New York with $2 million earmarked for the Nazi revival. But this squat, unkempt, little man was not the Nazi he claimed to be. Hans Busch was merely a nom de guerre for Holocaust survivor Ari Schoenberg, who had come to take his revenge. With the help of Interpol's José Da Silva, he would dismantle the new Reich from the inside out.

A richly imagined and suspenseful tale by one of our masters...
Many Nazis escaped following World War II â but where? South America seemed like a good bet â Paraguay, Argentina, Brazil â and there the Nazis, feeling safe, began planning the rise of their Nazi party.
But how to find them? A secret Jewish organization has created a anti-Semitic propagandist â really, a former death camp inmate, and thinking that the main part of the soon to be new Nazi party was based in Brazil, sent him there with â supposedly â two million dollars â money the Nazis needed to make their cause known.
Ari, the former death camp inmate, arrives in Brazil, and there follows, as only Robert Fish could imagine, a complicated set of adventures shadowed by Captain Jose da Silva.
This is a richly imagined and suspenseful tale based on the Nazi hunters following the Second World War â a tale not to be missed â and a warning to those who think they can escape from their brutal past.
