Long before musicians were discovered on TikTok, there was another surefire way to reach America's teenagers:
That's exactly what Tiffany did.
In this classic Stuck in the ’80s interview, we talk with Tiffany Darwish about her remarkable rise from shopping-mall performer to one of the biggest teen pop stars of the late ’80s.
Tiffany Takes Over the Malls
Tiffany was only 15 when her self-titled debut album arrived in 1987. But getting radio stations to pay attention to an unknown teenage singer wasn't easy.
The solution was the “Beautiful You: Celebrating the Good Life Shopping Mall Tour '87.”
Tiffany performed at malls across America, bringing her music directly to the teenagers who were already spending most of their free time there.
Her cover of “I Think We're Alone Now” exploded, reaching No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and giving Tiffany one of the defining pop hits of 1987.
“Could've Been” and Teen Idol Fame
The ballad “Could've Been” also reached No. 1, proving Tiffany wasn't going to disappear after one hit. Her debut album topped the charts as well, while a cover of The Beatles' “I Saw Him Standing There” — retitled “I Saw Her Standing There” — gave her another Top 10 single.
Suddenly, Tiffany wasn't performing for surprised shoppers passing the food court.
She was a genuine pop star.
And she was still a teenager.
The fame came remarkably quickly, bringing all the opportunities — and pressures — that accompanied being one of the most recognizable young singers in America.
Tiffany Looks Back on the ’80s
In our Tiffany interview, she looks back on those extraordinary years, the mall tour that became part of ’80s pop-culture history and the songs that fans still want to hear decades later.
Her career also offers a perfect snapshot of late-’80s teen pop, when Tiffany and Debbie Gibson demonstrated that teenage performers could dominate radio, MTV and the album charts alongside the decade's biggest established stars.
And “I Think We're Alone Now” has never really gone away.
Play those opening notes at an ’80s party and watch what happens.
Chances are, we're not alone now.
