Ilion native John Stephens has been involved with hockey in one way or another for 50 years. He has been a player, a coach, a ref, and an organizer of the Fire on Ice benefit game. For Stephens, it’s a family affair as well, as five generations of his family have played hockey right here in the Mohawk Valley. Hear his story on this episode of Marty’s Illegal Stick!

Hired in 2000 as Head Coach of the Utica College Men’s Ice Hockey team, Coach Gary Heenan’s program has become a model of success. Over the past 20 seasons, Utica College has had 17 consecutive playoff appearances, 7 regular season championships, 2 conference championships, and 20 or more wins in each of the past three seasons. Last season would have arguably been their most successful to date as the Pioneers earned a #1 seed in the NCAA tournament before it was canceled due to coronavirus. In this episode, we talk to Coach Heenan about the impact Coronavirus has had on his program and how it will be dealt with this season. We also talk about the keys to the team's success, playing in Europe, and more in this week's Marty’s Illegal Stick.

With almost 40 years of experience working as an off-ice official at the Utica Memorial Auditorium, Rob Bouck has seen it all. Bouck saw the best and worst of “old-time hockey” and worked with legends like Herb Brooks. Hear about these experiences on this episode of Marty’s Illegal Stick.
