The race was on. The Cold War spurred on competition between the United States and the Soviet Union, each fighting for dominance as the superior world power. Education became the battleground in which the Cold War was fought, and teachers were the soldiers. However, at the same time, anti-communist sentiment and a trend towards conservative politics arose. Through the actions of the government, treatment of teachers and professors, and changes in curriculum, the education system was significantly impacted in this time period.
