Studying Madison’s Urban Red Foxes and Coyotes

Listen Later

Last month, five foxes were translocated from the Glen Golf Course by the UW Urban Canid Project. This project researches red foxes and coyotes living in Madison. They began with a pilot study in January 2014 and now the live-trap and radio-collar local animals in order to remotely monitor their locations without disturbing them. Blood, nasal, and fecal samples are also collected study what diseases are prevalent in wild canid populations. Researcher Dr. David Drake joins A Public Affair to educate us on Madison’s wild neighbors.
Red fox and coyote sightings can be reported on the Canid Project’s iNaturalist page. At the time of this broadcast, more than 23 hundred sightings have been reported.
David Drake is a Professor and Extension Wildlife Specialist in the Department of Forest and Wildlife Ecology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
