I almost didn’t record this episode. I was tired, just got back from traveling with Onyx (his first flight!), and after being stranded at LAX for 90 minutes without a car seat, the last thing I wanted to do was podcast. But a commitment is a commitment, and I made one to show up every week.

My Hair Journey: Growing up mixed race in the DMV (DC, Maryland, Virginia area), my hair was always a struggle. My mom, who isn’t Black, did her best, but she didn’t know how to handle my texture. From mayonnaise treatments to dreadlocks in college, to chemical relaxers and disastrous DIY experiments, my hair has been a lifelong challenge. It wasn’t until I discovered wigs and weaves that everything changed. That missing link opened up a whole new world for me.

The Concept of the Missing Link: Whether it’s hair, business, or motherhood, there’s always a piece of information or guidance that can transform your journey. For me, discovering wigs and weaves was the missing link for my hair. In business, it was learning about marketing and sales. In motherhood, it’s understanding that you can’t do it all and need to prioritize.

Start Now, Figure It Out Later

I'm here to convince you to just go for it. If you're an entrepreneur, or anyone who has "given birth" to a business, a new identity, or a reinvention of yourself, this episode is for you. Why overthinking is just procrastination in a different outfit: I've trained over 7,000 stylists, and it's the most common thread I see holding people back.

How I started my YouTube channel: It started because two friends told me to just do it. So I had my assistant, who is NOT a videographer, hold my old iPhone in my kitchen, and we just started shooting. No fancy equipment, no scripts, no studio. I just committed to showing up consistently. And that little channel? That channel now has around 90,000 subscribers. It's led to TV spots, press, and over 90% of my customers found me there. All because I just started. 

The story behind Style Boss Academy: I launched the course before I ever made the course. I was totally done teaching stylists, I was burnt out. But the idea wouldn't leave me alone, so I went to the beach with my journal and mapped it all out. I had no videos, no curriculum, just an idea and a checkout page. I set this huge, scary money goal, and the pre-launch did almost DOUBLE that.

The creation of this very podcast: I didn't get a fancy studio or mic. I'm literally sitting in a Zoom room on my roof talking into my phone because I just decided to get it done.

A Mother of a Vision

I’m casting a new vision, one that includes a $13M house, pancakes in the kitchen with my kids, and making more money as a mom than I ever did as a single, childless woman.

In this week's episode, I'm sharing the story of how a vision I dared to have a decade ago completely shaped the life I'm living today. Now, I'm eight months postpartum, and I get to be a present mom and a badass entrepreneur. I am a 44-year-old woman who has built a career from absolutely nothing to massive success, and that’s a huge part of my identity that I’m not willing to give up. But I also want to be a full-time, fully present mother. I feel so lit up when I’m creating content for my business, and I feel just as lit up when I’m hanging out with my son, Onyx. So, I decided I would make my own path. 

So, I’m creating a new, even bigger mother of a vision.

My uterus has been through it ... Fibroids, endometriosis, and cysts. Add my age to the mix, and you have a recipe for not getting pregnant. Yet here I sit, a new mom at 44, to a beautiful baby boy.

80% of women will develop fibroids by the age of 50.

25-30% of women will experience symptomatic fibroids.

The symptoms? Heavy periods, anemia, pelvic pain, back pain, abdominal bloating, and difficulty getting pregnant or carrying the baby to term.

Every time I post about my fibroids journey online, I'm met with a flood of DMs, comments, and emails. Fellow sufferers want hope, to ask questions, and get advice from someone who has gone through it.

I'm always happy to respond to these requests because fibroids are no joke.

Then it hit me, now that I have a podcast, I can walk people through my entire journey. From natural remedies to surgery to spiritual solutions.

Episode 9: 

Baby, Take a Shower! 

Society tells us that being a hot mess mom is just part of the deal, right? One day, I decided to experiment. I got dressed, nothing fancy, just a cute outfit, a little makeup, and my jewelry. I took Onyx and my dog, Yohji, out for a walk to the coffee shop. And you know what happened? Nothing. Nobody held the door for me. Nobody offered to help as I juggled a stroller, a baby, a dog, and my tea. I thought, wow, does the world just hate moms?

So the next day, I tried something different. I went out looking like a total mess, hair unbrushed, no makeup, wearing whatever I could grab. And suddenly, everyone wanted to help. People were holding doors, offering to carry things, and giving me those “Oh, you poor thing” looks. It hit me: when you look like you have it together, people assume you don’t need help. But when you look like you’re struggling, they rush to your aid.

Society has glamorized the “hot mess mom” look, and while it’s funny and relatable sometimes, it’s not the vibe I want for you. Looking a mess is almost celebrated, but I think it gives women a free pass to look like garbage when they don’t even want to.

Why getting ready matters: I share the stats and research that prove how self-care routines like showering, grooming, and getting dressed can reduce stress, boost confidence, and even lower cortisol levels. Those first two weeks home with Onyx were rough. My hormones were crashing, and every evening, as soon as it was time to go to bed, I knew I wasn’t going to sleep. I’d be waking up every couple of hours to feed, swaddle, change diapers, and cry. It felt like an endless cycle, and I hated it.

But one night, as I sat there in the dark, I had a thought: what if I stopped fighting the night shift? What if, instead of dreading it, I leaned into it?
