Inequality, all of the impositions that render peoples unequal in this way or that, suspend the world in misery. Separateness and tribalism reign paramount, while universal freedom remains at bay. It is up to all of us whether we will individually—and then collectively—choose to embrace new priorities and attitudes that unite.

There are a few ironies when it comes to “enemies.” They make life more difficult, surely—but they also offer us a sense of contrast. They help us to know that which we don’t want…and that which we don’t want to be. In this sense, they are of real service to our own development.

Ultimately, we must dig ourselves out of the ruts into which we stumble—physical, mental, emotional, philosophical. We might fall in of our own accord; we may be enticed in, at times even kicked in (metaphorically). Nevertheless, it is up to us to discern clearly our current predicament—to see where we are, and rise up from the ashes of our own self-undoing.
