In this episode, I chat with Jack Masterson, who transitioned from being a chef to a filmmaker and has been making films since 2009. After graduating from Norwich University College of the Arts, Jack worked various cheffing jobs to fund his move to London before landing a role at The Mill Group in Elland, Yorkshire.
After 5.5 years with the agency, Jack took the plunge into freelance life in 2018 when his wedding video business took off. Since then, he’s been navigating the highs and lows of freelancing, working with a variety of clients while raising a family with his wife and two kids.
Fun fact: Jack loves Battenberg and plays in a band called Doe Pickle in his spare time.
In this episode, we cover:
His biggest freelance fail
How his definition of success is evolving
Getting noticed to fill his diary
The importance of working with likeminded people
3 ingredients for success as a freelancer
Collaboration over competition
Using networking as a form of therapy
The importance of paying freelancers on time
