Jordan Kernen is a teacher and mental health advocate who knows firsthand how difficult it can be to recognize when you need help, and how powerful life can become when you finally accept it.
In this episode of Success, Rewritten, Jordan shares her experience with anxiety, depression, OCD, and anorexia, tracing her mental health journey back to college when two traumatic events left her searching for something she could control. Food and exercise became that outlet, eventually developing into an eating disorder that she initially struggled to recognize as a problem.
Jordan opens up about reaching a life threatening point in her eating disorder, entering inpatient and residential treatment at Rogers Behavioral Health, and discovering through treatment that she wasn't alone. She and Emily discuss exposure therapy, challenging disordered thoughts, finding the gray area between black and white thinking, and why recovery doesn't necessarily mean never struggling again.
The conversation also explores Jordan's work as a teacher and how her own recovery shapes the way she talks to children about food, bodies, emotions, and mental health. Jordan explains why adults need to be mindful of the messages children absorb around dieting, calories, body image, and emotional expression, and why creating spaces where kids can safely be themselves matters.
Above all, Jordan shares the message she wishes she had heard sooner: asking for help can be terrifying, but once you realize you have people in your corner, recovery becomes possible.
