Jesus does.

Like the Chinese bamboo tree that grows unseen for years before shooting up dramatically, God was building deep roots in Joseph long before anything visible happened. Even in prison, God's steadfast love was present, and Joseph continued to show up, use his gifts, and point others to God rather than to himself. Being forgotten by the cupbearer for two years could have broken him, but Joseph remained ready. Suffering is not God punishing His people. It is often God preparing them. True faithfulness is rooted in who God is, not in how life is going, and the fruitfulness of our lives flows from that faithfulness.

Paul's ministry involved him being imprisoned on a few occasions. In this state of suffering, the gospel continued to spread in the area and beyond, even to Caesar's household and the guards. Upon seeing Paul's suffering in prison, but his boldness in proclaiming the gospel, others became more aggressive in their effects to spread the truth of the gospel in Christ. There were the ones who preached the gospel, yet were seeking self-glorification. Paul had the proper perspective: grow the gospel. The mission is to be made like Christ by glorifying him for the advancement of the gospel. Our circumstances do not limit the hand of God.

Paul identified the church in Thessalonica as a model church. The testimony of their faithfulness was spreading throughout the region and encouraged other suffering churches. However, even this model church was not immune from the devastating pain of loss. Even though they knew that the resurrection was true, in the moment of grief, some members of the church were shaken. Paul wrote these words to remind those who had lost loved ones that they could find comfort in the certainty of their hope. Hope in Christ's return is the source of Christian comfort. The death of loved ones is a tragically common part of life. Death is inevitable in a fallen world. Whether because of a sudden disaster like a car crash, the gradual encroachment of cancer, or slow decay of age, death comes to us all. When death invades your life, where will you find comfort in the midst of grief? The answer is found in 1 Thessalonians 4:13–18.
