July 15, 2018"Giving Ourselves Away - The How" - July 15, 2018STUDY QUESTIONSIn preparation before we examine 2 Cor. 9 let's quickly look at the context of this passage. In Chapter 8 starting with verse 2 through verse 6 - what can we learn about those to whom Paul was writing. Who are they? What were they like? What do they seem to already know about giving themselves away? In 2 Cor. 8:9 in what way do these believers have Christ attitude in them? Check out Phil. 2: 1- 8. Explain what 2 Cor. 8: 12 means. Is there a principle within this verse and if so what is it? How does this apply to the idea of giving ourselves away? Now looking at 2 Corinthians 9: 6 why do you think Paul would use an agricultural principle to describe giving? What is the truth being described here? In what way could the "covetousness" that Paul warns about in verse 5 affect the way the sower would sow his seed? What does it mean that each one must do as he has purposed in his heart? Why do you think he did not say "as he can afford"? See question #3. In what way does giving grudgingly and under compulsion fit better with covetousness than it does with a "cheerful giver"? What does a cheerful giver look like and why is that God loves those who cheerfully give? Remember what you discovered in Phil. 2 about the attitude that was in Christ. According to verse 8 what is God able to do and why is it important that we know this, especially if we have purposed in our hearts to give ourselves away? Link verse 8 with verse 10 and 11. Who is it that provides seed for the sower? In what way is the truth contained in these two verses a provision for all who have a heart to give? What is the promise? According to 2 Corinthians 9: 11 – 15 what is the result of trusting God and using what He has given us to give? In what way does giving ourselves away bring glory to God? In what way does giving ourselves away become a proof of who we are in Christ and our confession of the gospel of Christ? Consider Matt. 5: 16. What have you learned about how God would have you "give yourself away"? What are His promises to you and what are you planning to do with them as you live out your life to His glory this coming week? Month? Year? ...more0minPlay
July 08, 2018"Giving Yourself Away" - July 8, 2018STUDY QUESTIONSWhat does Paul say will make his joy complete? Why is this so important to Paul? Take a moment and compare what is recorded in verse 2 with what Jesus said in John 17:20,21? Is there a connection between the two passages and if so what is it? According to John 17: 23 what is the result of living like what is commanded in verse 2? Compare this with Phil. 1:27. What does it mean to be of the same mind? Maintaining the same love? United in spirit? Intent on one purpose? What does it mean to do things with a "humility of mind"? In what way is this true of Jesus? See Phil. 2: 6 – 8. What is verse 4 saying and not saying about looking after your own personal interests? When is it appropriate to look out for your own personal interests? What is Paul's point? Whose interests was Jesus looking out for? Check out John 6:38. What was Jesus' attitude? From this passage describe His attitude and as much as you can illustrate the way He lived it out with events or ministry moments from His life? In what way did Jesus choose to "give Himself away" according to Phil 2 and how does His example encourage us to do the same? Check out Matt. 20: 28. In what way does this passage lay down a foundation for you to follow Jesus in giving yourself away? Check out Matt. 20:20 – 28. How did Jesus give Himself away according to this passage? What does it mean personally for you to have the same attitude that was in Jesus? How can you take up Jesus invitation through Paul's words in Phil.2 and have Christ's attitude in you? What have you learned and how has what you have learned better equipped you to be like Jesus in "giving yourself away"? In what way are you going to apply what you now know?...more0minPlay
