Summit Church

Over the course of our “Perspectives of the Cross” series, we’ll glimpse the cross through a different lens each week. In order to help us carry these different perspectives into our lives at work and home, we’ve prepared a podcast that will accompany each Sunday’s message.

Episodes drop weekly on Monday mornings throughout the Lenten Season.

Join us through these 40 days of Lent, and together, we’ll expand our view of God’s saving work on the cross!

Johnny Outing // People are capable of acting with morality on their own, but that “morality” can only take you so far. Jesus lived a life of uncommon morality. His righteousness transcended anything humanity had seen before and gifted us right standing with God. Through the cross, we no longer live striving. Instead, we become the “salt of the earth” and the “light on the hill.”

Kailey Newkirk // Can humans keep from sinning? No, but the cross imputes the righteousness of Christ to us as a covering. The cross satisfies God’s demand for obedience. The cross is the ultimate defeat of Satan. The cross is the solution to sin in this world. The cross is where we find freedom not just from the penalty of sin but the power of sin that has kept us from following in Jesus’ footsteps for far too long.

Michael Hinton // In a famous story, Jesus was preaching in a house, and four men brought a paralyzed friend on a mat, hoping Jesus would heal him. They couldn’t get past the crowd, but they didn’t quit. They took matters into their own hands, climbed up, and made a hole in the roof to lower him down. If we’re to be a church “For Everyone” then we need to be bold and remove all unnecessary barriers for the sake of those God has given us to love.

Michael Hinton // When Jesus is asked what the greatest commandment is, he answers, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: `Love your neighbor as yourself.’” He also tells a story that shows how everyone in this new kingdom has great value and is worthy of love and care.

Michael Hinton // Jesus likened believers to the “light of the world,” purposed to shine God’s love and truth for all to see. If the church is truly for everyone, then it’s time we get practical about how we can engage with this challenge. This won’t be all we do, but we’ll begin by praying for our friends, families, and even those who are sick or hard to love this year.

Michael Hinton // Unfortunately, the church is known for being exclusive to many people in our world. This isn’t the way it was supposed to be, however. The earliest teachings of our faith make it clear that the Church was to be for everyone, and a church for everyone is for anyone.

Michael Hinton // God didn’t send Jesus, the Word made flesh, to condemn us, but he also would cease to be God if his truth became subservient to ours. Jesus is called the truth, the way, and the life, and finding and following him will take engagement, but it comes with the promise of abundant and eternal life.

Michael Hinton // God has extended a similar mission to every church since Jesus’ coming, but each expression has a unique DNA. Summit has been and will continue to be a safe place where people of diverse backgrounds can wrestle with questions of faith and learn to “find and follow” the way of Jesus.
