The one who believes in me will live, even though they die;Invest Series (part 12): Resurrection Day! Luke 24:17–24 [***NIV]1“…to stand again” means the resurrection covers our “shame” and guilt!Genesis 3:7 [***New Living Translation]At that moment, their eyes were opened, and they suddenly felt shame at their nakedness. So they strung fig leaves together around their hips to cover themselves.a)“Instead of good and evil, the couple now knows they are naked. …hardly the knowledge for which they bargained. i)What was formerly understood to be a sign of a healthy relationship between the man and the woman has become something…unpleasant and filled with shame.” (Victor P. Hamilton, The Book of Genesis: Chapters 1–17, NICOT (Grand Rapids: William B. Eerdmans, 1990), 191.)Genesis 2:25[***NIV; emphasis mine]The man and his wife were both naked, and they felt no shame.b)Living in “shame” means in “the loss of innocence…[we] attempt to alleviate the problem” ourselves. (Hamilton)i)*This guilt will drive us. It is a GOD-sized void. There is just something missing!ii)“Rather than driving them back to God, their guilt leads them into a self-atoning, self-protecting procedure: they must cover themselves….Genesis 3:7iii)The fig tree produces the largest leaves of any tree that grows in Palestine, and if such large-leafed trees were in the garden, then the couple would choose those that provide the most coverage….(1)translated aprons…in other places, an article of woman’s dress…or the belt of a warrior….” (Hamilton)(2)If I can just look good enough then my life will change. If I can just become a man of authority where I am the boss then I can get what I want and help others!iv)It is all the righteousness of JESUS! We can do nothing!2 Corinthians 5:21God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.John 6:28–2928 Then they asked him, “What must we do to do the works God requires?” 29 Jesus answered, “The work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent.” Romans 8:1–21 Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, 2 because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death.2“…to stand again” means the resurrection seals our relationship with GOD!Exodus 6:6–8 [***NIV]a)First Cup, new life: “I am the LORD, and I will bring you out from under the yoke of the Egyptians.” (v. 6)i)Not beaten, no bricks, no throwing babies in the Nile; I’m not in the same place! We are in the Promised Land: a new position with GOD…reclining while taking the LORD’s Supper! (Ray Vander Laan)b)Second Cup, the cup of deliverance: “I will free you from being slaves to themi)This bread that represents your deliverance from bondage, bread without yeast, this sinless bread, my sacrifice, my offering…Remember me.(1)Matso (unleavened bread): leavened bread represents sin (so when you leave Egypt, leave Egypt behind, that is, leave sin behind(2)Because of JESUS’ is sinless…sin has been broken in our lives and we have freedom to leave it behind!c)Third Cup, the cup of thanksgiving: “I will redeem you with an outstretched arm and with mighty acts of judgment.” (v. 6)i)The Cup of Thanksgiving or blessing: The meal is finishedii)GOD redeems them so they don’t even look like Egypt(1)I will clean you upLuke 22:20In the same way, after the supper h took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you.”d)Fourth Cup, the cup of protection: “I will take you as my own people [to be my people], and I will be your GOD.” (v. 7)i)Marriage language…brought them to Sinai to marry them (covenant… “new covenant”Luke 22:18For I tell you I will not drink again from the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes.”(1)JESUS left the Seder w/out drinking to GOD’s protectionJohn 15:13Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.(2)Possible the cup of hell itself…poured out on EgyptHebrews 10:31It is a dreadful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.(a)JESUS could be saying, “I have to drink it?” No! No! Not that cup. Let that cup pass. I can’t!(b)JESUS drank every drop…look the cup is empty…My GOD My GOD why have you forsaken me? Is that the last swallow? It is finished!Isaiah 53:4–6, 104 Surely he took up our infirmities and carried our sorrows, yet we considered him stricken by God, smitten by him, and afflicted.5 But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed. 6 We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to his own way; and the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all. 10 Yet it was the LORD's will to crush him and cause him to suffer, and though the LORD makes his life a guilt offering, he will see his offspring and prolong his days, and the will of the LORD will prosper in his hand.3“…to stand again” means the resurrection destroys hopelessness!a)Moses was a good as dead to the Israelites. He had no purpose. He served with no meaning (he thought for 40 years). i)But GOD had a purpose in Moses’ wandering. GOD had a transformational moment in the midst of shepherding, which was detestable to the Egyptians.ii)HE had a divine moment. When all was but lost, GOD stepped in. Moses was useful! It changed him.Hebrews 11:24–26 24 By faith Moses, when he had grown up, refused to be known as the son of Pharaoh's daughter. 25 He chose to be mistreated along with the people of God rather than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a short time. 26 He regarded disgrace for the sake of Christ as of greater value than the treasures of Egypt, because he was looking ahead to his reward.4 Application: Don’t go back to dead things!Luke 24:5–6a5 In their fright the women bowed down with their faces to the ground, but the men said to them, “Why do you look for the living among the dead? 6 He is not here; he has risen! (1)JESUS is not in the place HE has defeated!Palm Sunday Sermon Notes: 4/13/14Love you with everything I got!Invest series #11:Galatians 4:3–7 [New American Standard Bible; emphasis mine]3 So also we, while we were children, were held in bondage under the elemental things of the world.4 But when the fullness of the time came, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the Law, 5 so that He might redeem those who were under the Law, that we might receive the adoption as sons. 6 Because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into our hearts, crying, "Abba ! Father !" 7 Therefore you are no longer a slave, but a son ; and if a son, then an heir through God. 1“The expression ‘fullness of time’…conveys the notion that JESUS came ‘at just the right time.’” a)GOD will not only show up, but will show up “at just the right time.”Matthew 21:1–11[***NIV] b)The Israelites didn’t recognize HIMLuke 19:44bThey will not leave one stone on another, because you did not recognize the time of God’s coming to you.”i)When JESUS comes will I recognize HIM?ii)When JESUS shows up the flesh will not recognize HIM…(1)Abraham…not from the country…not from here(2)Moses…banished became the leader(3)Gideon…scared but lead(4)David…last of eight brothers(5)Solomon…son of a marriage that was adulterous and murderous(6)Jeremiah…nobody listened yet one of the greatest prophets(7)Ezekiel…with the outcast of Israel in exile(8)Paul…the most unlikely(9)Timothy…half Jew, half Greek(10)Jesus…from nowhere and son of a poor teenage girl…2The question: So, how can we recognize JESUS…“at the right time?”a)First fail proof way to recognize JESUS in our lives is Scripture. When we see Scripture fulfilled, GOD is at work!i)* “I don’t do drugs; I do Scripture!” (Judah Smith)ii)I mean, think about how many people were in Jerusalem? How many “donkey[s]?”(1)JESUS speaks specifically and quickly! “at once” (v. 2)(2)Good news is that HE speaks!iii)Victory in JESUS is not based on the power demonstrated with earthly strength.... HIS power is demonstrated when HIS true enemy is destroyed! Zechariah 9:9[***NIV]9 Rejoice greatly, Daughter Zion! Shout, Daughter Jerusalem! See, you king comes to you, righteous and victorious, lowly and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey. (1)(That is why JESUS says, “Bless your enemies?” Why? Because the true enemy is defeated and by giving to your enemies, it doesn’t make them stronger, it actually disarms them!Titus 2:7–87 In everything set them an example by doing what is good. In your teaching show integrity, seriousness 8 and soundness of speech that cannot be condemned, so that those who oppose you may be ashamed because they have nothing bad to say about us. iv)b)Second fail proof way to recognize JESUS in our lives is to obey. (vv. 6–9)i)“instructed” (v. 6) = “to put in order with”(1)it is more than just getting things right…it is aligning everything with JESUS!ii)JESUS’ words meant more than their reputation, fame, and being noticed. Obeying JESUS meant that something big would happen. (a)Obeying JESUS is more than just fulfilling an assignment! Obeying JESUS makes us stick out like a sore thumb! It throws a wrinkle in the very fabric of culture. Things begin to change and people notice!(b)When we obey we announce the KING is coming!1 Samuel 15:22But Samuel replied: "Does the LORD delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as much as in obeying the voice of the LORD? To obey is better than sacrifice, and to heed is better than the fat of rams.iii)There will be those who question you! (v. 10)(1)iv)Obedience changes the culture and stirs things up!(1)“stirred” = “to shake, agitate, cause to tremble” (The NAS New Testament Greek Lexicon)Philippians 1:27–2927 Whatever happens, conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ. Then, whether I come and see you or only hear about you in my absence, I will know that you stand firm in one spirit, contending as one man for the faith of the gospel 28 without being frightened in any way by those who oppose you. This is a sign to them that they will be destroyed, but that you will be saved--and that by God. 29 For it has been granted to you on behalf of Christ not only to believe on him, but also to suffer for him, (2)One thing I have noticed in my walk with JESUS, if I don’t stir things up then HE will stir things up in me!3Application:a)How do we see JESUS today? Is HE “prophet” or “KING?” i)Does JESUS just speak life or is HE your life?ii)LORD’s Supper next week…Sunday Morning Sermon Notes: 3/30/14With all my heart...#Invest (part 10): Passion Movement #21Intro: Illus: “The Marshmallow Test” (Mark Batterson, All In (Grand Rapids: Zondervan, 2013), 147f)a)“self-control”: “It’s one of the nine aspects of the fruit of the Spirit. And I don’t think it’s coincidental that it’s the last one listed. It takes the longest and might be the hardest to harvest….i)Dunamis is the power to do things beyond our natural ability. Exousia is the willpower to no things we have the ability to do.” (Ibid., 148)ii)“Judas Iscariot would have fallen into the ‘one marshmallow now’ group. He couldn’t keep his hand out of the cookie jar. He didn’t just sell out by betraying Jesus for thirty pieces of silver. Judas never bought in.” (Batterson, 149)John 12:6He did not say this because he cared about the poor but because he was a thief; as keeper of the money bag, he used to help himself to what was put into it.2The Problem: The reason people “sell out” on JESUS is because they have “never bought in.” (Batterson, 148)i) Matthew 26:14–164 Then one of the Twelve--the one called Judas Iscariot--went to the chief priests 15 and asked, "What are you willing to give me if I hand him over to you?" So they counted out for him thirty silver coins. 16 From then on Judas watched for an opportunity to hand him over. (1)“Judas” = “he shall be praised” (The NAS New Testament Commentary) “Iscariot” = “men of Kerioth” (Ibid.)“The betrayal of Jesus by Judas wasn’t a spur-of-the-moment mistake. He betrayed JESUS each and every time he pilfered the money pot.” (Batterson, 149)(2)“pick pocketing JESUS…. ii)“And while most of us can’t imagine pick-pocketing JESUS, we shortchange HIM in a thousand different ways. We rob GOD of the glory HE demands and deserves by not living up to our full, GOD-given potential.” (Batterson, 149)b) * “Sin always overpromises and under-delivers, while righteousness pays dividends for eternity.” (Ibid.)i)“Esau sold his birthright for a bowl of stew. Samson sold his secret for a one-night stand. Judas sold his soul for thirty pieces of silver.” (Ibid.)(1)“What were they thinking? …they weren’t. Nothing is more illogical than sin. It’s temporary insanity with eternal consequences.” (Ibid.)(2)“Thirty pieces of silver. That was Judas’s price point.” (Batterson, 150)(3)“Thirty pieces of silver…the exact amount to be paid if a slave was accidently killed under Mosaic law. Judas sold his soul for the replacement value of a slave.” (Ibid.) “$21.60”c)Why would Judas do it? “He wanted a political savior, and when JESUS didn’t meet his expectations, he went awol. And we do the same thing, don’t we? When GOD doesn’t conform to our expectations, we’re tempted to betray what we believe in….i)What was he like in his youth?ii)“Like Judas we’re in it for what we can get out of it.” (Batterson, 150)d)* “If [we] have simply invited [JESUS] to follow [us, then we will] bail out at the first sign of bad weather.” (Batterson, 150)i)“Our love is mixed with lies.” (Ibid.)(1)“…any of us are capable of betraying GOD if we allow the fear of people to erode the fear of GOD…” (Ibid., 151)(2)“Bad decisions usually lead to worse decisions.” (Ibid., 151) [*Neighbor subpoenaed to court]ii)“It is much easier to act like a Christian than it is to react like one!” (Batterson, 153)John 12:2–62 Here a dinner was given in Jesus' honor. Martha served, while Lazarus was among those reclining at the table with him. 3 Then Mary took about a pint of pure nard, an expensive perfume; she poured it on Jesus' feet and wiped his feet with her hair. And the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume. 4 But one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot, who was later to betray him, objected, 5 "Why wasn't this perfume sold and the money given to the poor? It was worth a year's wages. " 6 He did not say this because he cared about the poor but because he was a thief; as keeper of the money bag, he used to help himself to what was put into it. 3The Answer: GOD is not “holding out on” us! (Batterson, 154)Ephesians 2:13–1413 But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far away have been brought near by the blood of Christ. 14 For he himself is our peace, who has made the two groups one and has destroyed the barrier, the dividing wall of hostility a)If it wasn’t for JESUS we couldn’t get close! (“were far away”)i)The bottom line, the “wall” is not just high, but thick!b)“destroyed” “broke down” = “to loose any person…tied or fastened…of the feet” (The NAS New Testament Greek Lexicon)i)We were chained. Even though we could see the “wall,” we couldn’t get close!(1)We have worn our chains so long we don’t even recognize the weight! (Ex. When I was heavier…never realized what I was carrying until I lost it)ii)“Adam and Eve…buying into the enemy’s lie…” (Ibid.) They thought there was a separation…. They thought that separation was because of GOD.(1)Yet, “in Christ,” there is no separation: HE is the bridge! HE stood “in the gap” when no one else could! HE is for us what no one else can be!c)Why is all this happening to me Jon?Ephesians 2:19–21 i)We “are being built together to become a dwelling in which God lives by his Spirit.” (v. 21)(1)Something different about this community!4Application: a)“What defining decision do you need to make? What risk do you need to take? What sacrifice do you need to make?” (Batterson, 152)2 Timothy 2:13[NIV]if we are faithless, he remains faithful, for he cannot disown himself.b)The New Covenant is everything. i)When we feel weak HE is strong.ii)When we are poor HE is rich! nothing/everything (cattle on a thousand; the earth is the LORD’s)iii)Even when I feel lost, I am foundiv)Even when I am confused, JESUS gives me wisdomv)Even when we feel alone, JESUS is always with us. (Hebrews 13:5; child of GOD)vi)When we feel abandoned, we “have been bought with a price”vii)When we feel weak, with JESUS we are strong (2 Corinthians 12)viii)When we feel like death, we have been “made alive” in CHRIST!Sunday Evening Sermon Notes: 3/23/14Love you all!1 Why is our “sanctification so important? The “gospel of the kingdom” plays our in “The glory of Christ in Evangelism, Mission, and Sanctification.” (The Holy Bible and John Piper, GOD is the Gospel (Wheaton: Crossway, 2005), 87.)Matthew 4:23[***NASB][Ministry in Galilee] Jesus was going throughout all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every kind of disease and every kind of sickness among the people.Matthew 9:35[***NASB]Jesus was going through all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every kind of disease and every kind of sickness.Matthew 24:14[***NASB]"This gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all the nations, and then the end will come.2What does success look “The gospel is the revelation of the glory of Christ who is the image of GOD. [Col. 1:15] It is the self-authenticating display of the light of the knowledge of the glory of GOD in the face of CHIST.” (Piper, 87)Acts 26:17–18[***NIV]17 I will rescue you from your own people and from the Gentiles. I am sending you to them 18 to open their eyes and turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan to God, so that they may receive forgiveness of sins and a place among those who are sanctified by faith in me.'2 Corinthians 3:18 And we, who with unveiled faces all reflect the Lord's glory [“beholding the glory of the Lord”], are being transformed into his likeness with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.a)Stage #1: Living the Gospel, that is being “Christ-like” means “reflect[ing] the Lord’s glory.” (2 Cor. 3:18)i)“beholding” “is becoming.” (Piper, 90.)2 Corinthians 4:4–64 The god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers, so that they cannot see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God. 5 For we do not preach ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, and ourselves as your servants for Jesus' sake. 6 For God, who said, "Let light shine out of darkness," made his light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ.(1)We must fix “our attention on HIS glory,” who is JESUS! (Piper, 90; see 2 Cor. 4:6)(2)“beholding” = “to show in a mirror” (The NAS New Testament Greek Lexicon)(3)“We pray for grace to meditate on the fullness of the gospel of Christ crucified and risen.” (Piper, 90)ii)What about people who just don’t change Jon?(1)“How does this transformation into CHRIST’s image come? …it ‘comes from the Lord who is the Spirit.’ [Read 2 Corinthians 4:6 ‘…made his light shine….’ This is the way the HOLY SPIRIT does HIS ongoing change in us. He does not change us directly; he changes us by enabling us to see the glory of Christ.” (Piper, 90)b)Stage #2: We “are being transformed into his likeness with ever increasing glory….” (v. 18)i)part 1: “…what we absorb is greater confidence in JESUS’ counsel and HIS promises.(1)This has its own powerful effect on what we fear and desire and choose.” (Piper, 92)ii)part 2: “…from beholding the glory of Christ [means a] greater delight in HIS fellowship and deeper longing to see HIM in heaven. This its own liberating effect form the temptations of this world.” (Piper, 92)(1)It means more “than just looking at JESUS.(2)…trusting the promises of GOD as an essential way of conforming our behavior to Christ. The promises are part of the revelation of the glory of Christ, and the glory of Christ is part of why we embrace the promises so confidently.” (Piper, 93)c)Stage #3:”The transformation that comes from beholding the glory of Christ in the gospel happens incrementally. ‘Beholding the glory of the Lord, [we] are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another.’” (Piper, 93)i)Speaking of our transformation in terms of ‘glory’ shows that Christian glorification begins at conversion, not at death or resurrection. In fact, in Paul’s mind sanctification is the first phase of glorification.” (Piper, 93)Romans 8:30[***NASB]and these whom He predestined, He also called ; and these whom He called, He also justified; and these whom He justified, He also glorified.ii)“The first and primary meaning of…conformity is spirituals and moral. We see Christ Himself as infinitely beautiful in his spiritual and moral perfections, and therefore infinitely valuable.(1)“…as we behold him we also come to share more and more in CHRIST’s Spiritual perception of the Father and the world. (2)More and more we come to see the preciousness of GOD in the way CHRIST see the preciousness of GOD.” (Piper, 93)2 Corinthians 5:16[***NIV]1 Cor. 13:7[***NIV]Matthew 19:26[***NIV](3)Sunday Morning Sermon Notes: 3/23/14"It is right for me to feel this way about all of you since I have you in my heart" (Phil. 1:7a)
