Therefore stay awake.” As servants of Jesus look for and await the consummation of the eternal Kingdom, our call is to labor for Kingdom advancement, each with the gifts they have been given, knowing that Jesus makes every bit of our toil and labor eternally valuable.

They “devour widows’ houses, and for a pretense make long prayers. They will receive the greater condemnation.” Jesus then draws his disciples’ attention to someone truly worthy of honor - a poor, inconspicuous widow, most likely exploited by the scribes, who lives fully dependent on God. Which one are we most like?

Jamey Nettles | The Sadducees were highly influential religious & political leaders who didn’t believe in miracles or a future resurrection of the dead - so all that they valued and hoped to receive from God was in this life. They tried to trap Jesus in his words, but Jesus responded that these scholars “know neither the Scriptures nor the power of God.” Would Jesus say the same of us? Do we know the Scriptures without truly knowing them? Are we missing out on the power of God in our lives by living as though this life is all there is?
