SOLEMNITY OF MARY, MOTHER OF GOD | Sunday Mass Readings - January 1, 2023 (Year A)

Today the Church celebrates the Solemnity of Mary, the Holy Mother of God, our Lady's greatest title. This feast is the Octave Day of Christmas. In the current liturgical Calendar only Christmas and Easter enjoy the privilege of an octave. It is also the World Day of Peace.

"Mary, the all-holy ever-virgin Mother of God, is the masterwork of the mission of the Son and the Spirit in the fullness of time. For the first time in the plan of salvation and because his Spirit had prepared her, the Father found the dwelling place where his Son and his Spirit could dwell among men. In this sense the Church's Tradition has often read the most beautiful texts on wisdom in relation to Mary. Mary is acclaimed and represented in the liturgy as the "Seat of Wisdom."

This third week of Advent, the Church invites us to rejoice and wait.

The prophet Isaiah and St. John the Baptist are two important role models for us in this Second Sunday of Advent, who in their own way prepared the way for the Lord's coming. As successors of John through our baptismal promise, we have taken on the duty to prepare the way in our own time for the Lord’s imminent coming in power through the celebration of Christmas. Before we can be heralds of that great news we must first prepare a way for him to enter more deeply into our own hearts and we do that during these days of Advent.

SOLEMNITY OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST, KING OF THE UNIVERSE | Sunday Mass Readings - November 20, 2022  (Year C)

Jesus Christ is the King of kings: come, let us adore him.

Today's Solemnity of Christ the King establishes the titles for Christ's royalty over men: 1) Christ is God, the Creator of the universe and hence wields a supreme power over all things; "All things were created by Him"; 2) Christ is our Redeemer, He purchased us by His precious Blood, and made us His property and possession; 3) Christ is Head of the Church, "holding in all things the primacy"; 4) God bestowed upon Christ the nations of the world as His special possession and dominion.

In instituting this solemn feast, Pope Pius XI asserted that the most effective defense against the destructive forces of the age is the recognition of the kingship of Christ; and, furthermore, a feast which is celebrated every year by everyone is a far better way of deploying that defense than any number of books written by learned people. First, we do; then we come to understand what it is that we are doing.

As the liturgical year draws to a close it is appropriate that as we look back over it we acknowledge all that we have received from the Lord’s goodness. It is also a good time to look forward while affirming that Christ is the Lord of all – he is the Universal King.

THIRTY-THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME | Sunday Mass Readings - November 13, 2022  (Year C)

“Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be powerful earthquakes, famines, and plagues from place to place; and awesome sights and mighty signs will come from the sky." - Luke 21:10-11

These prophetic words of our Lord may refer to more grand and universal events to come, but it may also speak to our own particular situations present in our life today. Therefore, we should allow His words to speak to us within those situations. One specific message this passage tells us is that we should not be surprised if, at times, it appears as if our world is rattled to the core.

If we understand that Jesus is aware of the chaos we may encounter and if we understand that He actually prepared us for it, we will be more at peace when the troubles come.  (Catholic Daily Reflections)
