John 1:35-42

The first two followers of Jesus were originally disciples of John the Baptist. In the account of their choice to attach to Jesus, we find some basic ingredients of discipleship.

Jesus effects internal change through the baptism in the Holy Spirit.

When interrogated by a fact-finding delegation from the Jewish leaders from Jerusalem, John the Baptist stayed true to his mission—pointing people to Christ.

1 John 3:1-3

John stops and marvels over three spiritual blessings every Christian enjoys- and calls us to behold them, to remind us who we are and how we are to live.

John 1:15-18

In the concluding verses of the Prologue, the Apostle John provides 3 important declarations of the preeminence of Christ.

John 1:14

The Incarnation is a crucial doctrine: Jesus is fully God and fully man; two natures in one person. This truth is central to the gospel and must be affirmed in order to be saved.

John 1:12-13

Not all people are children of God—only those who have, by God’s sovereign grace, received Christ and believed on His name.

John 1:9-11

Though Christ is the true Light, and though His truth has shown on a lost world, most people have responded with ignorance (which is inexcusable) and rejection (which is scandalous).

John 1:6-8

John the Baptist was a unique messenger on a very specific mission—to prepare the hearts of the people for the coming of the Messiah. We, too, have been given the mission of pointing people to Christ.
