Sunday Reflection with Rev. Aaron Payson @ The Unitarian Universalist Church of Worcester, MA episodes

  • Of Shadows, Light, and Love

On the Sunday closest to Halloween/Samhain, we honor the time when the boundary between the living and the dead grows porous—giving us honest ground to consider the courage it takes to face mortality, grief, and fear directly rather than costume them away.

The Unitarian Universalist Church of Worcester (UUCW) is located in Worcester, the heart of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Our services are live-streamed on ... at 10 am every Sunday and stored on our website, www.uucworcester.org, for future viewing. • 20261018 Hungry Ghosts with Emily Miller Mlcak

We are delighted to welcome Emily Miller Mlcak to the pulpit this Sunday. Emily is currently serving as the congregation's ministerial intern.

We are never quite alone; the ghosts of our past walk with us, from our own regrets to our ancestors’ legacies to the long history of racism and sexism that lingers in our world.

Some ghosts offer wisdom, lighting the way toward a more just and loving life. Others feed on our fear and complacency, and the spiritual work before us is learning which ghosts to welcome and which to starve. Please note that this sermon will touch upon issues of racism and sexism.

  • 20261011 Seeing Is Being

This weekend is National Coming Out Day. A natural, unforced fit for courage — not just LGBTQ+ visibility, but the broader human courage of dropping a mask in a room that might not be safe. Contemporary edge: doing this in 2026, with LGBTQ+ rights actively contested in statehouses and courts — this isn’t nostalgia; it’s live risk for people in the pews. And it is part of the thread that connects honoring Domestic Violence Awareness Month, with our 50/50 Collection in support of the YWCA Domestic Violence Services Program, as well as Indigenous Peoples’ Day, which asks us to consider the stories we tell about ourselves and the way such narratives shape our relationship to both the past and the future.

  • 20261004 Rolling Over & Remaining Present

This is World Communion Sunday in the wider Christian calendar, and it falls right as Simchat Torah closes (the Jewish holiday ends at nightfall on Oct. 4, when the Torah scroll is rewound and reading begins again at Genesis 1). This creates a rich double resonance: what courage does it take to sit down across real difference—political, theological, cultural—and what courage does it take to start reading the same old processes one more time, expecting to find something new in it.

  • 20260927 What We Hand Down to Those We Raise Up

Our Religious Exploration program begins its new year today, and rather than treat this as a children’s milestone alone, we know that this is a congregation-wide happening.. This Homecoming service asks a question with no age limit on who gets to answer it: what do we owe to people we’ll see grow up and those we’ll never see grow up — a further generation, a further century, a world well past our own? Elders carrying decades of memory, midlife members building what comes next, and children just beginning their own religious education all have a stake in this shared covenant of our community.

  • 20260920 Limited Ledgers & Living Accounts

As Yom Kippur invites reflection on accountability, forgiveness, and renewal, we gather to consider the ledgers we keep, both consciously and unconsciously. What debts, regrets, disappointments, or old stories have we been carrying forward? Which accounts deserve to be settled, and which were never meant to be balanced in the first place? In a world that often measures worth by achievement, productivity, or perfection, this service explores a different kind of accounting: one rooted in relationship, compassion, and growth. Together, we will reflect on the blessing of new beginnings and the possibility of stepping into the year ahead with lighter hearts, renewed purpose, and a deeper commitment to living fully into our values.

  • 20260913 The Streams We Carry & Rivers We Ride

This Summer was not just about vacations and rest; it was also a summer of climate anxiety, news fatigue, AI disruption at work, and election-year exhaustion. We mingle the waters from our summer sojourns as a communal admission that no one’s summer was untouched by the wider world, and that beginning again this year requires rehydrating our spirits before diving into fall’s demands. And we welcome another year of worship, learning, companionship, and fun!

  • 20260607 A Faith For Unsettled Times

On this Heritage Sunday, as the congregation gathers for its annual meeting, we honor the enduring legacy of Unitarian, Universalist, and Unitarian Universalist thought — a tradition that has always held reason and compassion at its center. In a time of political chaos and global uncertainty, we remember that our faith was born from both courage and curiosity — from people who believed that truth and love could transform the world. This service invites us to reflect on how our heritage calls us to think deeply, act boldly, and keep the flame of justice alive.

  • 20260531 Mystery Matters

In a world that prizes certainty and control, we pause and honor the sacred unknown and the spiritual practice of letting go—of setting down our relentless curiosity long enough to feel the wonder that holds us. We’ll consider how mystery softens our hearts, deepens our compassion, and opens us to beauty beyond explanation. Drawing on voices from science, mysticism, and poetry, the service celebrates the courage to live without all the answers—and the grace that arises when we do.

  • 20260517 Curing With Curiosity

In a world often ruled by anxiety and judgment, this service invites us to explore curiosity as a spiritual antidote. Through reflection, music, and words shared, we’ll consider how curiosity opens the heart—transforming fear into wonder and criticism into compassion. Together, we’ll practice seeing the world not as something to control or evaluate, but as something to discover anew.
