The Unconsuming Fire
Preached by Pastor Michael Petillo on January 25, 2026
On Vision Sunday at Springs Church, Pastor Michael Petillo unpacked the heart behind the church’s vision and mission through a powerful message titled The Unconsuming Fire. Centered on the call to “ignite a passion for Christ,” this sermon reminded listeners that passion for God is not something we manufacture—it is something God Himself produces within us.
Pastor Michael taught that true passion is deeper than emotion or excitement. It is the setting of our affections on Christ, measured not by how we feel but by faithfulness and the direction of our lives. Drawing from Ezekiel 36, he explained that God promises to give His people a new heart and a new spirit, causing them to walk in obedience—not by human effort, but by His Spirit dwelling within them.
Using the image of Moses and the burning bush in Exodus 3, Pastor Michael illustrated how God’s fire burns within us without consuming us. Just as the bush burned without being destroyed, God lives and works through us without taking from our strength—He supplies everything Himself. Passion for Christ flows from God’s presence within us, not from striving in the flesh.
The message also emphasized that God forms passion through waiting. Throughout Scripture, God’s promises are fulfilled in seasons of waiting, not instant results. Pastor Michael challenged the modern church’s reliance on hype and busyness, calling believers back to the lost discipline of waiting on the Lord in worship, prayer, and obedience. Waiting is where God renews strength, restores affection, and deepens intimacy.
Finally, Pastor Michael reminded the church that waiting is not passive—it is active. Waiting means continuing to obey what God has already spoken, learning to relax under His lordship, and choosing to expect God to move with hope and trust. Even in seasons of spiritual warfare, disappointment, or weariness, God’s unconsuming fire is still at work, ready to reignite passion and faith in those who wait on Him.
This message calls believers to slow down, lean in, and trust that God is faithful to complete what He has begun—igniting a lasting passion for Christ that transforms lives and fuels His mission.
