He joined the Order of the Holy Cross in 1973 and was rector at two Episcopal parishes in Anaheim and in East Harlem, NYC.

John 2:13-222:13 The Passover of the Jews was near, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.

2:14 In the temple he found people selling cattle, sheep, and doves, and the money changers seated at their tables.

2:15 Making a whip of cords, he drove all of them out of the temple, both the sheep and the cattle. He also poured out the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables.

2:16 He told those who were selling the doves, "Take these things out of here! Stop making my Father's house a marketplace!"

2:17 His disciples remembered that it was written, "Zeal for your house will consume me."

2:18 The Jews then said to him, "What sign can you show us for doing this?"

2:19 Jesus answered them, "Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up."

2:20 The Jews then said, "This temple has been under construction for forty-six years, and will you raise it up in three days?"

2:21 But he was speaking of the temple of his body.

2:22 After he was raised from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this; and they believed the scripture and the word that Jesus had spoken.

Welcome to Switch Sunday - Elizabeth Hess, Coordinator of Children and Youth Ministries

Switch Sunday is an extraordinary day when all adults in our parish get to experience the delight of our Catechesis of the Good Shepherd program through atrium presentations. You might hear about the Pharisee and the Publican, the Unforgiving Servant, or Jesus' Presentation in the Temple. You might explore God's power working in small things, or discuss how God's plan has been working itself out in the last century.

All who are able are invited to accompany a catechist to a designated location to receive catechetical presentations during the Liturgy of the Word. Your pews are numbered, and you will be excused by group number to follow your catechist. If you prefer, for any reason, to remain in the sanctuary, please make your way to pews near the piano for a presentation. While the adults of the parish are enjoying their atrium encounters, our church school children will have the chance for their own one-on-one time with Trinity clergy, as they receive sanctuary tours and get to see sacramental materials up close. After our time of "seeing how the other half lives," we will all come back together in the sanctuary for the Liturgy of the Eucharist and celebrate together the unity and joy we find around God's table.

We welcome Sarah Thomas, a member of Trinity since 2005. Sarah is a postulant for the priesthood and is currently in seminary at the Church Divinity School of the Pacific where she will graduate next year. Sarah is also a part-time spiritual director and a full-time mom of Trinity kids Maddie, Zoe and Gwyneth.

Mark 1:9-151:9 In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan.1:10 And just as he was coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens torn apart and the Spirit descending like a dove on him.1:11 And a voice came from heaven, "You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased."1:12 And the Spirit immediately drove him out into the wilderness.1:13 He was in the wilderness forty days, tempted by Satan; and he was with the wild beasts; and the angels waited on him.1:14 Now after John was arrested, Jesus came to Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God,1:15 and saying, "The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God has come near; repent, and believe in the good news."

Ash Wednesday

Matthew 6:1-6, 16-216:1 "Beware of practicing your piety before others in order to be seen by them; for then you have no reward from your Father in heaven.6:2 "So whenever you give alms, do not sound a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, so that they may be praised by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward.6:3 But when you give alms, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing,6:4 so that your alms may be done in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you.6:5 "And whenever you pray, do not be like the hypocrites; for they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, so that they may be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward.6:6 But whenever you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you.6:16 "And whenever you fast, do not look dismal, like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces so as to show others that they are fasting. Last Sunday after Epiphany

Mark 9:2-99:2 Six days later, Jesus took with him Peter and James and John, and led them up a high mountain apart, by themselves. And he was transfigured before them,

9:3 and his clothes became dazzling white, such as no one on earth could bleach them.

9:4 And there appeared to them Elijah with Moses, who were talking with Jesus.

9:5 Then Peter said to Jesus, "Rabbi, it is good for us to be here; let us make three dwellings, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah."

9:6 He did not know what to say, for they were terrified.

9:7 Then a cloud overshadowed them, and from the cloud there came a voice, "This is my Son, the Beloved; listen to him!"

9:8 Suddenly when they looked around, they saw no one with them any more, but only Jesus.

9:9 As they were coming down the mountain, he ordered them to tell no one about what they had seen, until after the Son of Man had risen from the dead.

Fifth Sunday After Epiphany

Gospel:Mark 1:29-39

29As soon as theyleft the synagogue, they entered the house of Simon and Andrew, with James and John.30Now Simons mother-in-law was in bed with a fever, and they told him about her at once.31He came and took her by the hand and lifted her up. Then the fever left her, and she began to serve them.

32That evening, at sunset, they brought to him all who were sick or possessed with demons.33And the whole city was gathered around the door.34And he cured many who were sick with various diseases, and cast out many demons; and he would not permit the demons to speak, because they knew him.

35In the morning, while it was still very dark, he got up and went out to a deserted place, and there he prayed.36And Simon and his companions hunted for him.37When they found him, they said to him, Everyone is searching for you.38He answered, Let us go on to the neighbouring towns, so that I may proclaim the message there also; for that is what I came out to do.39And he went throughout Galilee, proclaiming the message in their synagogues and casting out demons.

Mark 1:21-281:21 They went to Capernaum; and when the sabbath came, he entered the synagogue and taught.1:22 They were astounded at his teaching, for he taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes.1:23 Just then there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit,1:24 and he cried out, "What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are, the Holy One of God."1:25 But Jesus rebuked him, saying, "Be silent, and come out of him!"1:26 And the unclean spirit, convulsing him and crying with a loud voice, came out of him.1:27 They were all amazed, and they kept on asking one another, "What is this? 1:16 As Jesus passed along the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net into the sea--for they were fishermen.

1:17 And Jesus said to them, "Follow me and I will make you fish for people."

1:18 And immediately they left their nets and followed him.

1:19 As he went a little farther, he saw James son of Zebedee and his brother John, who were in their boat mending the nets.

1:20 Immediately he called them; and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men, and followed him.

John 1:43-511:43 The next day Jesus decided to go to Galilee. He found Philip and said to him, "Follow me."

1:44 Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter.

1:45 Philip found Nathanael and said to him, "We have found him about whom Moses in the law and also the prophets wrote, Jesus son of Joseph from Nazareth."

1:46 Nathanael said to him, "Can anything good come out of Nazareth?" Philip said to him, "Come and see."

1:47 When Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him, he said of him, "Here is truly an Israelite in whom there is no deceit!"

1:48 Nathanael asked him, "Where did you get to know me?" Jesus answered, "I saw you under the fig tree before Philip called you."

1:49 Nathanael replied, "Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!"

1:50 Jesus answered, "Do you believe because I told you that I saw you under the fig tree? You will see greater things than these."

1:51 And he said to him, "Very truly, I tell you, you will see heaven opened and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of Man."

Trinity welcomes The Rev. Bob Honeychurch. Bob was the congregational vitality officer for the Episcopal Church, led the Appreciate Inquiry Summit at Trinity this weekend and the leadership retreat at Trinity last year.

Mark 1:4-111:4 John the baptizer appeared in the wilderness, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.

1:5 And people from the whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem were going out to him, and were baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins.

1:6 Now John was clothed with camel's hair, with a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey.

1:7 He proclaimed, "The one who is more powerful than I is coming after me; I am not worthy to stoop down and untie the thong of his sandals.

1:8 I have baptized you with water; but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit."
