Herald is a strange word, we don’t use it a lot, except when we sing “hark the herald angels sing”. A herald is a messenger sent to deliver an important message or decree on behalf of a king or high authority. In this case, to herald a message from God. God used prophets, angels, wise men, and a young family to announce the Good News of Jesus. Over the next several weeks, we will unpack each of these heralds in an attempt to better understand God’s perfect plan to spread this Good News.

We’re starting a new series this morning called, Multiply. God has gifted each of us with time, talent and treasure; gifts that He desires for us to both use and to give back to Him. When we give these resources back to God, He does something supernatural, He multiplies what we bring! Our God is a multiplier. However, many of us look at our resources like a leftover labeler, we want to make sure that there is enough for us. We are willing to share our time, talent, and treasure, but we also want to make sure there is enough for our needs first.

In a time of unrest, think about how you find peace, where do you turn to find relief? It’s not unusual for us to seek out some kind of escape that will take our mind away from the chaos we’re in. The question we need to wrestle with is: does the activity we’re turning to truly provide the peace that we seek for our soul or does it fall short?

Like a foreigner that enjoys a meal from their homeland or celebrates a holiday that reminds them of the home, we can experience a taste of heaven on earth. We can experience heavenly joy, celebration, and peace here on earth.

In the ministry of Jesus, we see a side of Jesus’ character we’re not too comfortable with. Jesus reveals this incredible part of His nature; Jesus the Servant. This is a side of Jesus that makes us uncomfortable because we like to think of Jesus as our King, not our Servant. However, this part of Jesus’ nature is critical for our faith.

This Sunday we were joined by one of our partners in ministry, Adult and Teen Challenge of Green Bay. ATC is a drug/alcohol/addiction residential treatment program. They shared an update, testimony and worshiped with us through music before pastor Shawn's sermon. 

The sermon: Jesus referred to Himself in John 10 as the Good Shepherd. For many, this is not the Jesus you grew up knowing, this is not the image of Jesus that immediately comes to mind. The shepherd is the overseer and caretaker of the flock. The shepherd provides safety, care and oversight for the sheep. The shepherd cares about the health of the sheep. The Pharisees were not doing a good job of shepherding their flock, Jesus uses this imagery to declare that He is The Good Shepherd.

We are all familiar with ladders, we use them to gain access to things that are inaccessible. Jesus says He is the ladder to heaven. This image paints a picture of us needing to put in the work of climbing the ladder to get to Jesus. But that is not the intended image that is being created by Scripture. Humanity does not climb up to God, instead God makes His divine presence known and felt on earth.
