  • John 1:6-13 | The Lamb Who Shares His Name

In our second week of Advent we have moved further into John 1. Here we see that the coming of the son of God into the world evokes different responses from different people. The way that we respond to Jesus is either a cause of tremendous joy or heartbreaking tragedy.

  • John 1:1-5 | The Lamb Before Time

  • Acts 6:8-8:3 | Is Jesus Worth Dying For?
As we end part one of Acts, the external threat of persecution builds to the point where the church suffers its first martyrdom. In his message to the religious leaders, Stephen frames up the Old Testament in the light of their current rejection of Christ and we see God’s providential hand moving in the aftermath of this tragedy.

  • Acts 6:1-7 | The Division of Labor

Acts 6:1-7 shows us an internal conflict that threatened the early church. What we see is a problem that was navigated through the wisdom of the apostles and a willingness to serve by a group of humble congregants. This is helpful to us as we consider what it looks like to love each other while working through the disputes that are common to church life.

  • Acts 5:12-42 | Jail Break!

This Sunday’s passage gave us our first glimpse of the world’s hostility to the gospel message. Though we have a message of grace and forgiveness it is often met with hostility. This story in Acts shows us the relentlessness of the apostles in the face of it and God’s providential hand moving events according to his will.

  • 11. The Godward Life of Prayer
Chapter 11 in Hear Me Now is on the mark of dying and documents the little deaths Pastor Jerry died as he became more and more like Christ. This sermon brings Jerry’s dependence on Christ through prayer into clear focus.
Jerry has been retired for six years after thirty-five years as the Grace senior pastor. Interim Pastor Mike Matheson reads the scripture and then humorously and fondly introduces Jerry as the “guest” speaker. As it turned out, this was the last sermon Pastor Jerry preached at Grace. Not surprisingly, it was on how we “move on” in the changes of life through prayer. Jerry’s prayer life had been continuing to deepen and became his greatest joy during big health changes, difficulties, and losses. These changes for Pastor Jerry started just months after this sermon and lasted through the last two years of his life.

  • Acts 4:23-31 | The Praying Church
After Peter and John are released from custody we see them rejoin with the other believers as they relay the events of what had happened to them. But it is in their ensuing prayer that we get a glimpse of the attitude of their hearts and the Spirit- led passion they had to see the Kingdom advance.
