The prophet Isaiah spoke to a people who knew darkness: “Arise, shine, for your light has come.” On Easter morning, that promise stands fulfilled. The stone is rolled away. The grave is empty. The glory of the Lord has risen in the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Because He lives, we rise with Him. Because His light shines, we shine in His name. The Morning has come, and because Christ lives, we rise and shine in His light.

With Pharaoh behind them and the sea before them, God’s people face an impossible night. The Lord opens a path through the waters and teaches us to trust His saving hand. When God’s people are trapped and powerless, the Lord makes a way and delivers them through the waters by His power alone. The Lord makes a way where there is no way.

Abraham walks into a night of testing where the future feels uncertain and the promise seems impossible. On the mountain, God provides and gives a glimpse of the greater provision to come in Jesus. When God’s promise seems threatened, the Lord provides what His people cannot, pointing to the Lamb who will be given for the world. God Himself provides the sacrifice that saves.

The flood is a long, dark night of judgment and waiting, yet God keeps Noah and his family and sets His promise in the sky. Lent teaches us to trust the God who holds His people steady even when the world feels unsteady. In the waters of judgment, God keeps His people and binds Himself to them with a covenant promise. Even when the waters rise, God is already keeping His people.
