  • But God
    11/13/22
    “But God”
    Ephesians 2:1-10

And you were dead in the trespasses and sins ~Ephesians 2:1 (ESV)

    1. We need a Savior because of our corruption in sin.

in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience— ~Ephesians 2:2

    2. We need a Savior because of our captivity to Satan.

among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind. ~Ephesians 2:3

    3. We need a Savior because of our condemnation to hell.

But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, ~Ephesians 2:4

even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved— ~Ephesians 2:5

and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, ~Ephesians 2:6

    4. But God

so that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. ~Ephesians 2:7

For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, ~Ephesians 2:8

    5. Faith in the face of temptation

not a result of works, so that no one may boast. ~Ephesians 2:9

For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them. ~Ephesians 2:10

  • What Are You Holding?
    Empowered Week #5

    What are you Holding?

    Judges:13, 14, 15

“And now I will send the Holy Spirit, just as my Father promised. But stay here in the city until the Holy Spirit comes and fills you with power from heaven.” Luke 24:49

The Holy Spirit lives inside of you from the moment of salvation

And the Spirit of the Lord began to stir him while he lived in Mahaneh-dan, which is located between the towns of Zorah and Eshtaol. Judges 13:25

How does the Holy Spirit stir your heart?

Our burden and our calling hold hands

As Samson and his parents were going down to Timnah, a young lion suddenly attacked Samson near the vineyards of Timnah. Judges 14:5

Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour.  I Peter 5:8

At that moment the Spirit of the Lord came powerfully upon him, and he ripped the lion’s jaws apart with his bare hands. He did it as easily as if it were a young goat. Judges 14:6

None of us are a victim to the temptation the enemy throws

Samson said to them, “Let me tell you a riddle. If you solve my riddle during these seven days of the celebration, I will give you thirty fine linen robes and thirty sets of festive clothing. 13 But if you can’t solve it, then you must give me thirty fine linen robes and thirty sets of festive clothing.” “All right,” they agreed, “let’s hear your riddle.” Judges 14:12-13

Don’t make agreements with the enemy

So he said: “Out of the one who eats came something to eat; out of the strong came something sweet.” Three days later they were still trying to figure it out. 15 On the fourth[b] day they said to Samson’s wife, “Entice your husband to explain the riddle for us, or we will burn down your father’s house with you in it. Did you invite us to this party just to make us poor?” 16 So Samson’s wife came to him in tears and said, “You don’t love me; you hate me! You have given my people a riddle, but you haven’t told me the answer.” “I haven’t even given the answer to my father or mother,” he replied. “Why should I tell you?” 17 So she cried whenever she was with him and kept it up for the rest of the celebration. At last, on the seventh day he told her the answer because she was tormenting him with her nagging. Then she explained the riddle to the young men. Judges 14:14-17

    The enemy is persistent

So before sunset of the seventh day, the men of the town came to Samson with their answer:“ What is sweeter than honey?  What is stronger than a lion?” Samson replied, “If you hadn’t plowed with my heifer, you wouldn’t have solved my riddle!” 19 Then the Spirit of the Lord came powerfully upon him. He went down to the town of Ashkelon, killed thirty men, took their belongings, and gave their clothing to the men who had solved his riddle. But Samson was furious about what had happened, and he went back home to live with his father and mother.  Judges 14:18-19

So 3,000 men of Judah went down to get Samson at the cave in the rock of Etam. They said to Samson, “Don’t you realize the Philistines rule over us? What are you doing to us?” But Samson replied, “I only did to them what they did to me.” 12 But the men of Judah told him, “We have come to tie you up and hand you over to the Philistines.” “All right,” Samson said. “But promise that you won’t kill me yourselves.” 13 “We will only tie you up and hand you over to the Philistines,” they replied. “We won’t kill you.” So they tied him up with two new ropes and brought him up from the rock. 14 As Samson arrived at Lehi, the Philistines came shouting in triumph. But the Spirit of the Lord came powerfully upon Samson, and he snapped the ropes on his arms as if they were burnt strands of flax, and they fell from his wrists. 15 Then he found the jawbone of a recently killed donkey. He picked it up and killed 1,000 Philistines with it. Judges 15:11-15

For the Lord is the Spirit, and wherever the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.  2 Corinthians 3:17

    Grabbing My Attention

    Isaiah 38:1-6

How is God grabbing your attention?

Sometime God speaks through people, sometimes God speaks through circumstances

About that time Hezekiah became deathly ill, and the prophet Isaiah son of Amoz went to visit him. He gave the king this message: “This is what the Lord says: ‘Set your affairs in order, for you are going to die. You will not recover from this illness.’” Isaiah 38:1

When tragedy hits, we usually do 1 of 2 things; we blame God or we turn to God

When Hezekiah heard this, he turned his face to the wall and prayed to the Lord, 3 “Remember, O Lord, how I have always been faithful to you and have served you single-mindedly, always doing what pleases you.” Then he broke down and wept bitterly. Isaiah 38:2-3

Don’t tell God what you need. Instead ask Him what He wants you to do next.

Then this message came to Isaiah from the Lord: 5 “Go back to Hezekiah and tell him, ‘This is what the Lord, the God of your ancestor David, says: I have heard your prayer and seen your tears. I will add fifteen years to your life... Isaiah 38:4-5

    15= the number of rest

...and I will rescue you and this city from the king of Assyria. Yes, I will defend this city. Isaiah 38:6

    Fruit of the Spirit

    Galatians 5:22-23

But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these things!  Galatians 5:22-23

    1. Love

God is not in love with some future version of you. God loves you right now, today, just the way you are.

God, teach me to see me, as you see me

    2. Joy

Happiness is based on circumstances. Joy is based on who Jesus is.

    3. Peace

The peace of God does not prevent the storm from coming. The peace of God allows us to have peace during the storm

    4. Patience

Patience is walking in faith knowing that God’s going to bring about His will in His time

    5. Kindness

    6. Goodness

Therefore, whenever we have the opportunity, we should do good to everyone—especially to those in the family of faith. Galatians 6:10

    7. Faithfulness

The manifestation of the Fruit of the Spirit that pertains to loyalty and trustworthiness

    8. Gentleness

What if we were known for our gentleness rather than our condemnation?

  • We are Empowered
    Empowered Week #2
    We are Empowered
    Acts 3:1-12

Peter and John went to the Temple one afternoon to take part in the three o’clock prayer service. 2 As they approached the Temple, a man lame from birth was being carried in. Each day he was put beside the Temple gate, the one called the Beautiful Gate, so he could beg from the people going into the Temple. 3 When he saw Peter and John about to enter, he asked them for some money. 4 Peter and John looked at him intently, and Peter said, “Look at us!” 5 The lame man looked at them eagerly, expecting some money. 6 But Peter said, “I don’t have any silver or gold for you. But I’ll give you what I have. In the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene, get up and walk!” Acts 3:1-6
    • As followers of Jesus, we are called to speak life over people
    • Then Peter took the lame man by the right hand and helped him up. And as he did, the man’s feet and ankles were instantly healed and strengthened.  Acts 3:7
      • Too many “Christians” will pray for you but wont talk to you
      • What do you need to put down in order to grab hold of what God wants for you?
      • He jumped up, stood on his feet, and began to walk! Then, walking, leaping, and praising God, he went into the Temple with them. 9 All the people saw him walking and heard him praising God. 10 When they realized he was the lame beggar they had seen so often at the Beautiful Gate, they were absolutely astounded! 11 They all rushed out in amazement to Solomon’s Colonnade, where the man was holding tightly to Peter and John. Acts 3:8-11
        • Don’t let anyone identify you by who you use to be!
        • Peter saw his opportunity and addressed the crowd. “People of Israel,” he said, “what is so surprising about this? And why stare at us as though we had made this man walk by our own power or godliness?  Acts 3:12

While Peter and John were speaking to the people, they were confronted by the priests, the captain of the Temple guard, and some of the Sadducees.  Acts 4:1
          • Jesus is about freedom. Religion is about control and manipulation
          • These leaders were very disturbed that Peter and John were teaching the people that through Jesus there is a resurrection of the dead. Acts 4:2
            • Religious people always miss the miracle
            • Through Jesus, there is a resurrection from the dead
            • They arrested them and, since it was already evening, put them in jail until morning. 4 But many of the people who heard their message believed it, so the number of men who believed now totaled about 5,000. 5 The next day the council of all the rulers and elders and teachers of religious law met in Jerusalem. 6 Annas the high priest was there, along with Caiaphas, John, Alexander, and other relatives of the high priest. 7 They brought in the two disciples and demanded, “By what power, or in whose name, have you done this?”

8 Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, “Rulers and elders of our people, 9 are we being questioned today because we’ve done a good deed for a crippled man? Do you want to know how he was healed? 10 Let me clearly state to all of you and to all the people of Israel that he was healed by the powerful name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene, the man you crucified but whom God raised from the dead. 11 For Jesus is the one referred to in the Scriptures, where it says, ‘The stone that you builders rejected has now become the cornerstone.’ 12 There is salvation in no one else! God has given no other name under heaven by which we must be saved.” 13 The members of the council were amazed when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, for they could see that they were ordinary men with no special training in the Scriptures. They also recognized them as men who had been with Jesus. 14 But since they could see the man who had been healed standing right there among them, there was nothing the council could say. 15 So they ordered Peter and John out of the council chamber and conferred among themselves. Acts 4:3-15
              • Don’t miss the miracle God wants to do in your life
              • As soon as they were freed, Peter and John returned to the other believers and told them what the leading priests and elders had said. Acts 4:23

              • Empowered by the Spirit
                Empowered Week #1

                Empowered by The Spirit

                Acts 2:1-4

                1. Because of the Holy Spirit we have unity

On the day of Pentecost all the believers were meeting together in one place. Acts 2:1

The devil does not fear a big church, but he does fear a unified church

Five things we have to be unified on:

                a. Jesus is fully God and fully Man

                b. Jesus was born of a virgin

                c. Salvation is by faith alone in Christ alone

                d. I’m messed up

                e. Jesus is alive and He is coming back

                2. Because of the Holy Spirit we have power

Suddenly, there was a sound from heaven like the roaring of a mighty windstorm, and it filled the house where they were sitting. Acts 2:2

As Samson and his parents were going down to Timnah, a young lion suddenly attacked Samson near the vineyards of Timnah. 6 At that moment the Spirit of the Lord came powerfully upon him, and he ripped the lion’s jaws apart with his bare hands. He did it as easily as if it were a young goat. Judges 14:5-6

Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour. 1 Peter 5:8

The Spirit of God, who raised Jesus from the dead, lives in you. And just as God raised Christ Jesus from the dead, he will give life to your mortal bodies by this same Spirit living within you. Romans 8:11

                3. The Holy Spirit gives each believer Spiritual Gifts

Then, what looked like flames or tongues of fire appeared and settled on each of them.  Acts 2:3

The two metaphors given for the Holy Spirit in the book of Acts are wind and fire

A spiritual gift is given to each of us so we can help each other. 1 Corinthians 12:7

Two questions you can ask to help identify your gifting:

                1. What do I enjoy?

                2. What do I do well?

                4. Because of the Holy Spirit, we are enabled

And everyone present was filled with the Holy Spirit and began speaking in other languages, as the Holy Spirit gave them this ability. Acts 2:4

Moses told them, “This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: Each of you, take your swords and go back and forth from one end of the camp to the other. Kill everyone—even your brothers, friends, and neighbors.” 28 The Levites obeyed Moses’ command, and about 3,000 people died that day. Exodus 32:27-28

There’s a difference between conviction and condemnation

Those who believed what Peter said were baptized and added to the church that day—about 3,000 in all. Acts 2:41

              • Mistaken Identity
                Misinformed week #4
                Mistaken Identity
                Matthew 16:13-17

Social media is a tool that we should use rather than a tool that controls us

The misinformation is--- you need to find your identity in the ideas that other people have about you

When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is? Matthew 16:13

“Well,” they replied, “some say John the Baptist, some say Elijah, and others say Jeremiah or one of the other prophets.” Matthew 16:14

When we become who “they” want us to be, we’re not becoming who Jesus wants us to be

The people retorted, “You Samaritan devil! Didn’t we say all along that you were possessed by a demon?” John 8:48

                Personal attack

                Private thoughts

Negative thoughts do not come from God

Negative thoughts are ideas usually that are planted in our mind by other people

                Painful Action

We do not have to allow deception to keep us from our destiny

Then he asked them, “But who do you say I am?” Matthew 16:15

You get to choose who the "you" is for you

Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.” 17 Jesus replied, “You are blessed, Simon son of John, because my Father in heaven has revealed this to you. You did not learn this from any human being. Matthew 16:16-17

Correction is speaking life. Condemnation is speaking death.

So now there is no condemnation for those who belong to Christ Jesus. Romans 8:1

What is true about you if you are in Christ:

                You are free

                You are forgiven

                You are not forsaken

                You are blessed

                You are victorious

              • Tipping the Golden Calf
                Misinformation week #3

                Tipping the Golden Calf

                Exodus 32:1-6

                Three points of Misinformation:

                1. The better you are, the more God loves you

                2. When I mess up I lose my salvation

                3. I’ve got to work my way back

When the people saw how long it was taking Moses to come back down the mountain, they gathered around Aaron. “Come on,” they said, “make us some gods who can lead us. We don’t know what happened to this fellow Moses, who brought us here from the land of Egypt.” Exodus 32:1

It’s easy to judge someone else’s character when you wear a judge’s robe

So Aaron said, “Take the gold rings from the ears of your wives and sons and daughters, and bring them to me.” 3 All the people took the gold rings from their ears and brought them to Aaron. 4 Then Aaron took the gold, melted it down, and molded it into the shape of a calf. When the people saw it, they exclaimed, “O Israel, these are the gods who brought you out of the land of Egypt!”  Aaron saw how excited the people were, so he built an altar in front of the calf. Then he announced, “Tomorrow will be a festival to the Lord!” 6 The people got up early the next morning to sacrifice burnt offerings and peace offerings. After this, they celebrated with feasting and drinking, and they indulged in pagan revelry. Exodus 32:2-6

Sin always has more consequences than we could ever imagine

“Call for your brother, Aaron, and his sons, Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar. Set them apart from the rest of the people of Israel so they may minister to me and be my priests. 2 Make sacred garments for Aaron that are glorious and beautiful. Exodus 28:1-2

These are the garments they are to make: a chestpiece, an ephod, a robe, a patterned tunic, a turban, and a sash. They are to make these sacred garments for your brother, Aaron, and his sons to wear when they serve me as priests. 5 So give them fine linen cloth, gold thread, and blue, purple, and scarlet thread. Exodus 28:4-5

Three points of the True Information of Jesus Christ:

                1. In Christ, there is no disappointment from God towards you

                2. God’s love is limitless

If God didn’t love bad people, god wouldn’t love any people

But even before I was born, God chose me and called me by his marvelous grace. Then it pleased him 16 to reveal his Son to me so that I would proclaim the Good News about Jesus to the Gentiles. Galatians 1:15-16

                3. God’s mercy is received, not achieved

Now all glory to God, who is able to keep you from falling away and will bring you with great joy into his glorious presence without a single fault.  Jude 1:24

                Misinformed Week #1

Don’t Be Afraid, Just Have Faith

                Mark 5:21-42

What do I intentionally do on a daily basis to put my focus on Jesus?

                Nobody accidently follows Jesus

Jesus got into the boat again and went back to the other side of the lake, where a large crowd gathered around him on the shore. 22 Then a leader of the local synagogue, whose name was Jairus, arrived. When he saw Jesus, he fell at his feet, 23 pleading fervently with him. “My little daughter is dying,” he said. “Please come and lay your hands on her; heal her so she can live.” 24 Jesus went with him, and all the people followed, crowding around him. Mark 5:21-24

If you ever doubt the desperation of God for you, you need to look no further than the cross

A woman in the crowd had suffered for twelve years with constant bleeding. 26 She had suffered a great deal from many doctors, and over the years she had spent everything she had to pay them, but she had gotten no better. In fact, she had gotten worse. 27 She had heard about Jesus, so she came up behind him through the crowd and touched his robe. 28 For she thought to herself, “If I can just touch his robe, I will be healed.” 29 Immediately the bleeding stopped, and she could feel in her body that she had been healed of her terrible condition. 30 Jesus realized at once that healing power had gone out from him, so he turned around in the crowd and asked, “Who touched my robe?” 31 His disciples said to him, “Look at this crowd pressing around you. How can you ask, ‘Who touched me?’” 32 But he kept on looking around to see who had done it Mark 5:25-32

Sometimes, even those closest to Jesus don’t know what He is doing

Then the frightened woman, trembling at the realization of what had happened to her, came and fell to her knees in front of him and told him what she had done. Mark 5:33

Religion will kill you. Jesus will heal you.

And he said to her, “Daughter, your faith has made you well. Go in peace. Your suffering is over.” Mark 5:34

Jesus is not trying to beat us down, He’s trying to lift us up

While he was still speaking to her, messengers arrived from the home of Jairus, the leader of the synagogue. They told him, “Your daughter is dead. There’s no use troubling the Teacher now.” Mark 5:35

Misinformation comes from that multiple sources we allow to speak into our lives

While he was still speaking to her, messengers arrived from the home of Jairus, the leader of the synagogue. They told him, “Your daughter is dead. There’s no use troubling the Teacher now.” 36 But Jesus overheard them and said to Jairus, “Don’t be afraid. Just have faith.” 37 Then Jesus stopped the crowd and wouldn’t let anyone go with him except Peter, James, and John (the brother of James). 38 When they came to the home of the synagogue leader, Jesus saw much commotion and weeping and wailing. 39 He went inside and asked, “Why all this commotion and weeping? The child isn’t dead; she’s only asleep.” 40 The crowd laughed at him. But he made them all leave, and he took the girl’s father and mother and his three disciples into the room where the girl was lying. 41 Holding her hand, he said to her, “Talitha koum,” which means “Little girl, get up!” Mark 5:35-41

                Jesus values relationship over rules

Holding her hand, he said to her, “Talitha koum,” which means “Little girl, get up!” 42 And the girl, who was twelve years old, immediately stood up and walked around! They were overwhelmed and totally amazed.  Mark 5:41-42

The reason we need to pay attention to Jesus instead of the misinformation of the world is because if we pay attention to the misinformation, we'll bury the blessing

When it comes to connecting with others, one of the biggest obstacles in regards to our walk with Jesus is our unwillingness to forgive

“I am Joseph!” he said to his brothers. “Is my father still alive?” But his brothers were speechless! They were stunned to realize that Joseph was standing there in front of them. 4 “Please, come closer,” he said to them. So they came closer. And he said again, “I am Joseph, your brother, whom you sold into slavery in Egypt. Genesis 45:3-4

But don’t be upset, and don’t be angry with yourselves for selling me to this place. It was God who sent me here ahead of you to preserve your lives. 6 This famine that has ravaged the land for two years will last five more years, and there will be neither plowing nor harvesting. 7 God has sent me ahead of you to keep you and your families alive and to preserve many survivors. 8 So it was God who sent me here, not you! And he is the one who made me an adviser to Pharaoh—the manager of his entire palace and the governor of all Egypt. Genesis 45:5-8

                1.  Forgiveness is up to us, not them

Waiting for someone to say “I’m sorry” is not forgiveness, it’s entitlement

After burying Jacob, Joseph returned to Egypt with his brothers and all who had accompanied him to his father’s burial. 15 But now that their father was dead, Joseph’s brothers became fearful. “Now Joseph will show his anger and pay us back for all the wrong we did to him,” they said. 16 So they sent this message to Joseph: “Before your father died, he instructed us 17 to  say to you: ‘Please forgive your brothers for the great wrong they did to you—for their sin in treating you so cruelly.’ So we, the servants of the God of your father, beg you to forgive our sin.” When Joseph received the message, he broke down and wept. 18 Then his brothers came and threw themselves down before Joseph. “Look, we are your slaves!” they said. 19 But Joseph replied, “Don’t be afraid of me. Am I God, that I can punish you? 20 You intended to harm me, but God intended it all for good. He brought me to this position so I could save the lives of many people. 21 No, don’t be afraid. I will continue to take care of you and your children.” So he reassured them by speaking kindly to them. Genesis 50:14-21

When we learn to forgive, fear begins to disappear in our lives

                2. Forgiveness is not a one time decision, it’s a process

Forgiveness is a choice, not a feeling

Then Peter came to him and asked, “Lord, how often should I forgive someone who sins against me? Seven times?” 22 “No, not seven times,”  Jesus replied, “but seventy times seven!  Matthew 18:21-22

                3. Forgiveness does not mean complete restoration

You can forgive people but you cannot change them

Some relationships may never be restored

If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.  Romans 12:18

                4. Forgiveness frees me, not them

Instead, be kind to each other, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God through Christ has forgiven you.  Ephesians 4:32
