In this episode, Alana explores how many of us formed by the evangelical movement have experienced the trauma of being entrained to be enablers, particularly of people in positions of religious power.  She names the internal wrestling she has gone through, of seeing the difference between holding a perception of one sacred universe, and being expected to offer "cheap grace" to people who abuse their positions of power. In this particular podcast, Alana explores the roots and rise of Evangelicalism and how many of us who see ourselves as "post evangelical" need to be examining our own reactions... because the evangelical movement itself rose out of reactivity. Near the end of the episode Alana confesses to the role she has played in the very present danger of political sectarianism that is on the doorstep of the entire Western world, and currently playing out in the United States.

In this episode, I am sharing a live talk and chant I did on facebook today. The talk is about how I've been wrestling with the difference between naming something and name calling... the difference between a fierce accountability and debasing others. Then I play a chant I wrote as a prayer for the interfaith groups on the ground in Charlottesville back in the summer of 2017. I also wrote the chant as a way to encourage people to not shut their eyes to the signs of extremism that we witnessed, and to do the difficult work of keeping our hearts open as well as our eyes. To be wise as serpents and soft as doves.
