  • Mixtape Rewind: Songs That Ask The Big Questions

This week's Mixtape Rewind takes us back to season 2 when Matt and Sam put together a mix centered around songs that ask questions.

We kick off with The Who asking the most direct opener imaginable, then slide into Third Eye Blind heartbreak, Snoop Dogg identity, and a newer Snoop cut that feels like confidence distilled. Along the way we hit War’s endlessly singable “Why Can’t We Be Friends,” A Tribe Called Quest proving some songs never age, and Joe Jackson’s sharp little spiral of “Is She Really Going Out With Him.” The questions get bigger and weirder from there, with Pixies capturing that drifting, upside-down feeling that somehow still fits modern life.

The back half turns reflective without losing the fun. We talk about how arrangement can change meaning in “What’s So Funny ’Bout Peace, Love, And Understanding,” why “What’s My Age Again” lands harder the older you get, and how the Bee Gees remind everyone they’re more than disco. We close with Michael Jackson’s “Will You Be There,” plus a heavy dose of 90s soundtrack nostalgia and the memories that come packaged with the music.

    1. Who Are You? by The Who
    2. How’s It Going To Be? by Third Eye Blind
    3. Who Am I? by Snoop Dogg

  • May And Might Mixtape

One word can send a playlist in a dozen directions. We set the rule to “May” and “might” and then let the songs do what great songs always do: open doors we didn’t expect. Jenn Tully fills in for Sam and joins Matt to trade picks that connect by title, lyric, and mood, and we keep the curation human, leaning on memory and instinct instead of outsourcing taste.

We start with the Bee Gees in their pre-disco glow, then jump to Led Zeppelin and the “May Queen” line that still feels like a life lesson about choices and changing course. From there, we test a common music debate: is “new country” actually bad, or did a certain pop-country era poison the well? Zach Bryan’s “Fifth of May” becomes the case study for modern country songwriting that feels specific, honest, and lived-in.

The ride keeps swerving in the best way. We talk Bruno Mars as a talent machine, Bruce Springsteen’s Nebraska era grit, and the hidden story inside the Goo Goo Dolls’ “Slide” when you actually listen to the lyrics. Then it’s The Cars, They Might Be Giants, and Metallica in a sequence that proves a good mix can handle whiplash if the theme is strong. We even slow down for “It Might Be You” and a real question about Tootsie, comedy, and whether nuance survives modern pop culture.

    1. First of May - Bee Gees

  • Mixtape Rewind: The Do Not Play Wedding List

This week's Mixtape Rewind is an important one.  We put together a “songs you should definitely not play at a wedding” mixtape a couple of years ago and we think it still works.  We've got wildly overplayed crowd-pleasers, feel-good hits with breakup lyrics, and nostalgic bangers that get real weird the moment you listen closely.

We start with the classics that seem harmless until you have heard them at 30 receptions, then move into songs that DJs love because they are “safe” even though the message is anything but. We dig into why certain fan favorites land wrong for the bride and groom, how a catchy chorus can distract from uncomfortable verses, and why some tracks create instant vibe-killer confusion on the dance floor.

It is a practical guide for couples, wedding planners, and DJs who want a packed dance floor without accidental cheating anthems, cringe singalongs, or “why is this playing right now” moments.

    1. Brown-Eyed Girl - Van Morrison
    2. Ho Hey - The Lumineers
    3. Celebration - Kool and the Gang
    4. Marry You - Bruno Mars
    5. Mambo No. 5 - Lou Bega
    6. Pumped Up Kicks - Foster the People
    7. Pour Some Sugar On Me - Def Leppard
    8. Escape (The Pina Colada Song) - Rupert Holmes
    9. Macarena - Los Del Rio

  • Super Awesome April New Music Mix!

Matt and Sam are back with new music for the month of April!

We start in bright, timeless territory with Bruno Mars and a throwback pop approach that feels built for wedding dance floors, then slam the door into heavier energy with Muse leaning into hard rock and metal textures. From there, we dig into Fantastic Cat’s sharp songwriting, where a simple hook hides surprisingly dark, observant lines about how we package history and tragedy. Moby shows up with a dance track that’s louder than an old mall store and stickier than it first appears, and Jack White reminds us why great guitar tone and fearless rhythm still matter in modern rock.

A big takeaway comes from The Temper Trap: playlist sequencing changes your experience. Put a lower-energy track in the wrong spot and it can feel like a full brake, even when it’s a great song. We also geek out over Raye’s musical-style album storytelling, the dark EDM chemistry of Boys Noize teaming with Nine Inch Nails, and Snoop Dogg’s effortless “strut mix” confidence.

Then there’s Lana Del Rey delivering a Bond-worthy theme for a new James Bond video game, plus an EDM closer from Afrojack, Sia, and David Guetta that feels like a momentum switch flipping on. We wrap with Rosalia and the reminder that translating lyrics can reveal a whole second song hiding inside the beat.

    1. Dance with Me - Bruno Mars
    2. Unraveling - Muse
    3. Elevator - Fantastic Cat
    4. Everytime You Touch Me - Moby and BOOO!
    5. G.O.D. and the Broken Ribs - Jack White
    6. Sungazer - The Temper Trap
    7. The WhatsApp Shakespeare - RAYE
    8. Came Back Haunted - Nine Inch Nails & Boys Noisz
    9. Step - Snoop Dogg featuring Swizz Beatz
    10. First Light - Lana Del Rey
    11. Awake Tonight - AFROJACK, Sia & David Guetta

  • A Birthday Playlist Built On Perfect Squares

Matt just turned 49, and instead of doing a normal birthday playlist, we turned it into a rule: only songs from the years he hit perfect-square ages. That one idea creates a timeline you can actually hear, jumping from 1978 to 1981 to 1986, then into 1993, 2002, and 2013, with two tracks per year and a lot of life packed in between.

We talk through why each pick makes the cut and what it carries with it. Kenny Rogers’ “The Gambler” becomes a family story about risk, immigration, and gratitude. The Who’s “Who Are You” turns into a birthday question that never stops being useful, while Rush’s “Tom Sawyer” and Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin’” bring the pure classic rock adrenaline. Later, Paul Simon and Van Halen hit the sweet spot of memory and ambition, then Tony! Toni! Tone! and Prince add sharp lessons about money, attention, and the weirdly perfect connections you only notice looking backward.

The mix gets heavier and more honest too. We get into Bruce Springsteen’s “The Rising” and its 9/11-era weight, and Matt shares the personal story behind Eminem’s “Without Me” and how a song can show up at the exact moment you need it. We close with Macklemore’s “Can’t Hold Us” tied to a daughter’s dance solo, and Fun.’s “Carry On” as a message for anyone in a long season of parenting, grief, or rebuilding.
