This month (February’s) podcast was on Monster Train, a deck-building rogue-like and also tower defense game (somewhat literally in the way the game represents things with you pyre/health at the top). You have cards with abilities and units, various effects are enacted, you place units in the way of an enemy deck and their units which try to get to the top floor to take out your pyre/engine.
In this one we discuss our experience building decks and secondary champions, trying out the various combinations, how this game stacks up to others we’ve played in the genre, difficulty and tuning of it with rogue-likes in mind, like Hades and Darkest Dungeon as well as Balatro, which was on our minds as a recent game of note (play that too!).
Check out the liner notes here, as well, for the usual extra bits and bobs to add to the experience of listening and hopefully checking out Monster Train for yourself.
Also if you’re already a fan, the second game comes out soon (!):
Next month is Pokemon Black, with a return to the series after our play-through of Pokemon Crystal back in 2022.
