Super Magic Time Friends

Who am I? Where do I come from? What is my name? Heroes in geek titles often can't answer any of these questions, because they're an amnesiac hero. It is a cheap trope that's been used to death, but as we learned this week, if implemented right, it's an awesome trope! This week's titles are:06.15 The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (game, 2017)24.47 Generator Rex (cartoon, 2010)39.07 Dark City (movie, 1998)51.29 Robocop (movie, 1987)Wanna get in touch with us? Robots are often the bad guys in geek media. This week, we wanted to talk about friendly robots, who help us needy humans. When we're in danger, or want to be the coolest kid in school, or... want to clean our house! This week's titles are:06.10 Short Circuit (movie, 1986)20.36 Medabots (anime, 1999)32.23 Chibi-Robo! (game, 2005)45.39 Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (movie, 2016)Wanna get in touch with us? They are inescapable in the geek landscape: mentors. Old, scruffy men who will tell you how to live your life. We have four examples of mentors, one of them is terrible, and three of them are not terrible, but... not that great of a mentor either. This week's titles are:07.24 The Matrix (movie, 1999)19.10 Professor Layton and the Curious Village (game, 2007)30.14 ‘Stick’ (Daredevil season 1, episode 7, TV, 2015)39.22 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #1-7 (comic, 1984)Wanna get in touch with us? Look it up on YouTube. It's wonderful. And terrible.

It is a trope as old as time: a dragon, sleeping on a vast amount of golden coins. This week, we are visiting the lair/cave/mountain/volcano/cottage of four different dragons. This week's titles are:05.45 The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (movie, 2013)22.20 Dragon’s Lair (game, 1983)35.08 ‘Dragonshy’ (My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic season 1, episode 7, cartoon, 2010)47.20 Dragonheart (movie, 1996)Wanna get in touch with us? Why did Shredder always tie the Turtles up, in stead of killing them right away? Because he is a villain, and that's what villains do! We assembled some of the worst offenders of this trope that we love to hate:This week's titles are:05.20 Far Cry 3 (game, 2012)19.43 ‘Riddle Me That’ (Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight #185 - #189, comic arc, 2005)32.33 Warlock (movie, 1989)46.41 Dragon Ball Z season 3 (anime, 1991)Wanna get in touch with us? Some franchises are so popular that people tend to forget they had a pretty rough start: an anime that began its live as a funny but no so pretty webcomic, a movie franchise that had some forgettable first titles, a game series that started out bumpy as hell and a tv-series that came out of one of the worst movies we've ever seen. This week's titles are:04.54 One Punch Man (webcomic, 2009)17.44 Thor (movie, 2011)32.28 Street Fighter (game, 1987)50.01 Buffy the Vampire Slayer (movie, 1992)Wanna get in touch with us? We're back from the dead, with our first listener suggested theme: resurrection. Is it a cheap trope that should be banished from fiction, or is there nothing more awesome than characters coming back from the dead? This week's titles are:09.07 Alien: Resurrection (movie, 1997)21.02 House of X/Powers of X (comics, 2019)36.46 Jade Empire (game, 2005)53.27 The Transformers season 03 (cartoon, 1986)Check out the ranking on our blog:https://supermagictimefriends.tumblr.com/Our theme is called The Lift and it is performed by Seventh Gear.https://freemusicarchive.org/music/Seventh_Gear/Gunshot/03_-_Seventh_Gear_-_The_Lift_-_Gunshot/

After this episode, we'll be taking two months off, but we wanted to go out with a bang! We discussed a record number of franchises, because we're talking crossovers this week. If you believe in the concept of Hell, it's scary as... as Hell! But if you're a geek, it's an awesome place that spawns all kinds of cool characters. And sometimes these characters are even good guys! (Year One, Episode Nineteen)Our subjects this episode: Disgaea: Hour of Darkness (game, 2003), Spawn #1-6 (comic, 1992), Jacob's Ladder (movie, 1990), Lucifer Season 01 (TV, 2016).https://supermagictimefriends.tumblr.com/Our theme is called The Lift and it is performed by Seventh Gear.https://freemusicarchive.org/music/Seventh_Gear/Gunshot/03_-_Seventh_Gear_-_The_Lift_-_Gunshot/

The people who make our video games, comics and cartoons seem to think that motorcycles make everything cooler. And... they do, but that doesn't mean that every title with a motorcycle in it is particularly good per se... (Year One, Episode Eighteen)Our subjects this episode: Biker Mice from Mars (cartoon, 1993), Days Gone (game, 2019), Team America (comic, 1982), Ghost Rider (movie, 2007).https://supermagictimefriends.tumblr.com/Our theme is called The Lift and it is performed by Seventh Gear.https://freemusicarchive.org/music/Seventh_Gear/Gunshot/03_-_Seventh_Gear_-_The_Lift_-_Gunshot/
