A new World Economic Forum report warns that antimicrobial resistance (AMR), driven by antibiotic misuse, poses a major global health and economic threat, with nearly 4.71 million deaths in 2021 and potential to surpass cancer as the top cause of death by 2050.
AMR could also slash global GDP by up to 3.8%. Asia is seen as a critical hotspot, with AMR-related deaths among over-70s rising over 80% since 1990.
