Episode 20 of The Superfluous Podcast is up and ready! Full disclosure: This should have gone online months ago.
After a brief summary of our Thanksgiving time with family, Dan start the show by detailing the importance of the tv show I Love Lucy. He also forgets the phrase 'in concert'. 2020 will do that to you.
Sam talks about the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, and the cutting-edge float technology it uses. We end the show in the usual way, by mentioning our current Netflix binges, and we also discuss our fantasy football woes.
Thanks for listening, and Happy Hanukkah to those who celebrate!
The Superfluous Podcast makes it's glorious return for it's 19th episode! We can't wait to go back to bars for our regular trivia, but in the meantime, we're getting our topics from other sources, like trivia via Zoom.
Apparently Disney Plus is making a LEGO Star Wars holiday special this year. Dan talks about the first holiday special from way back in 1978 and how insanely weird it is before finishing up with Apple's first computer ever. Sam uses Snapple bottle caps for his topics, and goes over some of those facts that aren't exactly accurate.
Thanks again for listening, and let us know what you think!
We're back with the last Superfluous episode of 2019! We went to our normal haunt, Little Woodrows, and did not do so hot this time, but at least we got an episode title that would make for a great '50s pop cover band name. Dan talks for a bit about the play The Iceman Cometh, as well as the terrible movie The Snowman. Sam talks about the hypnic jerk, a sleep phenomenon that actually happens pretty often.
We also open a box of goodies that we received from Geeks Who Drink, and we close out with a brief recap of the infamous Peloton ad. Thanks for listening and sharing throughout 2019, and be on the lookout for new episodes in 2020!
After a nice long podcast siesta, Sam and Dan are back with episode 16 of The Superfluous Podcast. We went to the only Sunday trivia spot in Houston, Houston Cider Company.
While Dan details Madeline L'Engle's A Wrinkle in Time, Sam details the history of the Denver Omelette as well as other named sandwiches. Dan talks briefly about Fleabag, and Sam plugs season 2 of The Kominsky Method and our new favorite restaurant in the Heights, Neo Baguette!
Look for episode 17 most likely in December. Thanks again for listening!
After a summer vacation, we're back with episode 15 of @superfluous! After a quick foray
into humorous baseball names, Dan talks about the novel IT and IT's appearances in other Stephen King novels. Sam talks about all the achievements in space travel that have happened so far this year.
We close out by talking about Derry Girls, a new Netflix show. We also mention the Ted Cruz/Andrew Yang basketball game that hopefully
happens soon. Thanks again for listening!
Sam and Dan are back for episode 14 of Superfluous. After close game for episode 13, we pulled out the W for episode 14! This makes our 3rd win at Darwins.
Dan starts off by describing his trip to Pennsylvania, and their multitude of trivia formats, such as Showtime Trivia (the Geeks Who Drink format isn't so popular up in that neck of the woods). Sam mentions a few notable freemasons, and we talk about what we know about these famous masons.
To close it out, Dan talks about his next big purchase, the huge board game Gloomhaven. Sam talks about the most recent concert he went to, which featured Jimmy Eat World and Third Eye Blind. Thanks again for listening, and keep an eye out for episode 15!
The Superfluous Podcast is back for episode 13, this time with a different intro song! We went to our normal trivia haunt, Darwin's Pub, and ended in our normal place, second.
Dan talks about the mid-2000s song 'The Ketchup Song' and its tenuous relationship to Satanism and Rapper's Delight. Sam talks about Aston Martin, James Bond's favorite car brand, and the gadgets that the cars have in the movies.
To close out the show, Sam talks about a Reel Big Fish concert he went to, and Dan talks about Maggie Rogers, a new favorite artist. Thanks for listening, and check us out on Facebook and Twitter.
Sam and Dan are back for Episode 12, and the winning streak continues! This week, we went to Ayesha Curry and Michael Mina's International Smoke. We wanted to see what all the fuss was about. Spoiler alert: the food was decidedly food; burger was decent but overpriced, and it's a bit of a schlep to get to from our part of town.
Dan starts his topic by talking about a tiny subatomic particle called quarks, but there's not a lot of trivia there unless you have a huge amount of physics knowledge, so the discussion pivots to a different topic from a different trivia night. Ever heard of "Cuffing" season? It's that time of year where fall turns to winter and millennials start tying themselves to their dating partners just to have a plus-one to the office Christmas party. We dive into that and more as we explore millennial dating culture.
Sam's topic is a best-selling novel called "Where the Crawdad's Sing." The topic itself was not all that interesting but we found it amusing that we had it right as a joke but decided to go with a more serious-sounding fill-in-the-blank answer. The book spent 30+ weeks at the top of the New York Times bestseller list, thanks to Reese Witherspoon (which was surprisingly difficult to pronunce today).
RIP Whataburger and Schlitterbahn.
Sam and Dan are back for Episode 11. We went to trivia at our normal Little Woodrows, and we had some trouble finding topics for this episode. That is because we finally won!
Dan starts off by talking about the group Buckner and Garcia, who sang Pac-Man Fever...and nothing else. We go into detail about how popular arcade games were in the early 80s, as well as their massive decline in the mid-80s.
Sam talks about the Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration (yes it is really called that) and the discovery of the South Pole by Roald Amundsen (NOT Ernest Shackleton), who became quite the worldwide celebrity.
To wrap up the show, we talk about the Netflix show Santa Clarita Diet a band named Minor League, and; we use their song 'This Is Hectic' to close out the show.
Thanks again for listening, and make sure to tell your friends and check out our Twitter! @Superfluous_Pod
Sam and Dan are back for episode 10 of Superfluous. Normally we would have some banter before our topics, but we skipped that since each of us had a lot to talk about.
Dan starts by talking about the Paper Plane, a whiskey cocktail with aperol, then goes on to talk about The Great Aperol Spritz Debate of 2019. Not knowing anything about it beforehand. we mostly talk about the popularity of spritzes in general, the customary time to drink spritzes, and the exact formula if you want to experiment with spritzes at home. Sam talks about perhaps the most famous Worlds Fair, which took place in 1893 in Chicago. Sam mentions the famous exhibits and attendees, including Helen Keller and H.H. Holmes. We each could have gone into way more detail, but we decided to keep the episode at a tight 40 minutes.
For an outro song, we are using "Danger. High Voltage' by Electric Six. You've probably never heard it before, but trust us, you'll be into it. Make sure to like and listen. and Dont forget: #spritzlife
