Devin: What is your superpower?
Sarah: Building community and starting movements based on values.
Equity crowdfunding is reshaping the investment landscape, breaking down barriers to capital and empowering underrepresented entrepreneurs. Sarah Hardwick, an entrepreneur and expert in equity crowdfunding, is at the forefront of this movement, leveraging her expertise to make investing more accessible to all.
Sarah understands firsthand the challenges entrepreneurs face in securing funding. “Traditional fundraising methods often exclude a vast majority of small business owners,” she said. “Equity crowdfunding provides a way for everyday investors to support businesses they believe in while giving founders a viable alternative to venture capital.”
Through her work with The Crowd, Sarah helps businesses navigate the complexities of launching successful crowdfunding campaigns. She emphasizes that equity crowdfunding is not just about raising money—it’s about building a community of engaged supporters who become brand ambassadors. “When people invest, they feel a sense of ownership. They want to see the business succeed, and they help spread the word,” she explained.
Sarah highlighted the importance of transparency and storytelling in crowdfunding. A compelling narrative can make the difference between a successful campaign and one that struggles to gain traction. “Investors connect with authenticity. They want to know who they’re backing, why the business matters, and how it will make an impact,” she said.
The Crowd itself is leveraging equity crowdfunding to fuel its own growth, showcasing the model’s effectiveness. By raising capital from the public, the company practices what it preaches, proving that this funding method can drive meaningful expansion.
As more entrepreneurs turn to equity crowdfunding, Sarah believes the financial world is moving toward greater inclusivity. “This is about democratizing investment. It’s about allowing more people to participate in wealth creation, not just the elite few,” she said.
For founders considering this route, Sarah offers clear advice: Be prepared, be transparent, and engage with your audience. With the right approach, equity crowdfunding can be a powerful tool for growth and impact.

Sarah Hardwick shares insights on how equity crowdfunding is transforming access to capital for entrepreneurs.
The conversation highlights the importance of transparency and storytelling in building successful crowdfunding campaigns.
Sarah explains how The Crowd is leveraging equity crowdfunding to grow and empower other businesses.
She reveals her superpower, visionary storytelling, and how it helps businesses connect with investors.
Practical advice is shared on crafting compelling narratives to engage investors and build community support.
How to Develop Visionary Storytelling As a Superpower
Sarah Hardwick’s superpower is visionary storytelling. She has a unique ability to craft compelling narratives that resonate with investors, turning ideas into movements and businesses into community-driven ventures.
“A great story isn’t just about facts—it’s about connection,” Sarah said. “Investors want to know the people behind the company, what drives them, and how their investment can make a difference.” Through her expertise in equity crowdfunding, she has demonstrated how storytelling transforms a fundraising campaign into a movement, making investors feel like they are part of something bigger.
One striking example of Sarah’s storytelling superpower in action was a campaign she helped structure for a mission-driven startup. The founder had an inspiring backstory but struggled to articulate it in a way that engaged potential investors. Sarah worked closely with them to refine their message, focusing on their journey, their impact, and their vision for the future. With a compelling narrative in place, the campaign exceeded its fundraising goals, proving the power of authentic storytelling.
For those looking to develop visionary storytelling as a skill, Sarah offers the following actionable tips:
Define your “why” clearly—investors want to understand your deeper purpose.
Be authentic—genuine passion and honesty build trust with potential supporters.
Keep it simple—clarity and focus make your story easier to remember and share.
Use multimedia—videos, images, and testimonials enhance the emotional connection.
Engage consistently—interact with your audience and keep them updated throughout your journey.
By following Sarah’s example and advice, you can make visionary storytelling a skill. With practice and effort, you could make it a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world.
Remember, however, that research into success suggests that building on your own superpowers is more important than creating new ones or overcoming weaknesses. You do you!

Jilea: Turning vision into reality
Traditional grocery shopping is being transformed by cutting-edge technology, and Jilea Hemmings is leading the charge. As the Founder and CEO of Nourish + Bloom Market, she has pioneered the first autonomous grocery store in the U.S. that seamlessly integrates artificial intelligence and robotics to enhance the shopping experience.
Jilea’s vision for the future of grocery shopping is rooted in convenience, accessibility, and sustainability. By eliminating checkout lines and enabling a frictionless purchasing process, she has created a store that caters to busy professionals, parents, and communities seeking healthier food options with ease. “We wanted to build a space where people could shop efficiently while still having access to fresh, high-quality products,” Jilea explained during our conversation.
Her journey to launching Nourish + Bloom Market was driven by a deeply personal mission. After her son was diagnosed with autism, Jilea became passionate about nutrition and the role it plays in health. This led her to develop a business that prioritizes both wellness and innovation. “Our goal was not only to make shopping more efficient but also to ensure that our community has access to nutritious foods,” she shared.
Beyond convenience, Nourish + Bloom Market also champions sustainability. The store’s model reduces food waste by using real-time inventory tracking and smart purchasing recommendations, ensuring that customers get fresh food while minimizing excess stock. “We’re leveraging technology to create a smarter, more responsible way to shop,” Jilea said.
As impact-driven entrepreneurs continue to shape the future of retail, Jilea’s story stands as an inspiring example of how technology and purpose can come together to make a meaningful difference. Her vision for Nourish + Bloom Market isn’t just about making grocery shopping easier—it’s about making it better for people and the planet.
tl;dr:

She explains the role of AI and robotics in creating a seamless and efficient shopping experience.
Jilea discusses how visionary leadership helped her turn an ambitious idea into reality.
She offers advice on embracing change, identifying gaps, and leveraging technology to drive innovation.
How to Develop Visionary Leadership As a Superpower
Jilea Hemmings’s superpower is visionary leadership—her ability to see beyond the present and build innovative solutions for the future. She defines her strength as thinking ahead and executing on bold ideas, even when others may not immediately see the potential.
"I’ve always believed that innovation comes from seeing what’s missing and creating it," Jilea explained in today’s episode. "When we built Nourish + Bloom Market, we weren’t just opening a store—we were creating a new way for people to shop, integrating technology to make life easier and healthier."
Jilea’s superpower was on full display when she launched Nourish + Bloom Market, the first autonomous grocery store in the U.S. Her vision wasn’t just about convenience—it was about making fresh, healthy food more accessible to everyone. Recognizing gaps in the traditional grocery model, she leveraged AI and robotics to eliminate checkout lines, ensuring a seamless and efficient shopping experience.
For those looking to develop their own visionary leadership, Jilea’s approach offers valuable insights:
Embrace change: The world is evolving—see change as an opportunity rather than a challenge.
Identify gaps: Look for what’s missing in your industry and imagine how you can fill the void.
Execute fearlessly: Bold ideas require action. Take the first step even if the path isn’t fully clear.
Leverage technology: Innovation often comes from integrating new tools and ideas in unique ways.
Stay mission-driven: Visionary leadership isn’t just about being first—it’s about making a real impact.
By following Jilea Hemmings’s example and advice, you can make visionary leadership a skill. With practice and effort, you could make it a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world.

Devin: What is your superpower?
Alejandro: Cultivating connection, using food and hospitality to bring people together and build community.
Bibi Ji isn’t just a restaurant; it’s a tribute to family, tradition, and sustainability. Alejandro Medina, its owner, brings Indian culinary heritage to Santa Barbara while championing regenerative farming and natural wines.
Inspired by his mentor, Rajat Parr, Alejandro developed Bibi Ji to honor generations of Indian culinary tradition. The restaurant’s name itself, a term of endearment for a respected female figure, reflects the homage paid to grandmothers and mothers who passed down cherished recipes. Alejandro meticulously recreates traditional Kolkata dishes using local, sustainably sourced ingredients.
A major pillar of Bibi Ji’s philosophy is its dedication to natural wines. Contrary to the belief that Indian cuisine pairs best with beer, Alejandro curates an extensive selection of natural wines. “People care so much about where their food comes from, but we often feel sometimes that it’s overlooked about what they’re drinking,” Alejandro said. His goal is to highlight wines that are farmed and crafted with the same care as the restaurant’s ingredients.
Beyond the plate and glass, Alejandro takes sustainability a step further by prioritizing regenerative agriculture. The restaurant sources from farmers who practice organic and biodynamic methods, ensuring the land remains fertile for future generations. “I’m here to do my best part that I can for future generations and giving back to the land in any way that we can,” Alejandro shared. Even seemingly small choices, like harvesting cover crops for use in dishes rather than allowing conventional farms to spray them with pesticides, contribute to his mission of reducing waste and environmental impact.
Bibi Ji is currently raising capital on SMBX to support its growth. Alejandro and his team recently relocated the restaurant, doubling its size and requiring significant renovations. The funds will help expand operations, restructure loans, and sustain their commitment to quality and sustainability.
Alejandro’s passion for food, wine, and environmental responsibility has positioned Bibi Ji as a culinary destination that respects tradition while pioneering change. By blending heritage recipes with forward-thinking sustainability, he is reshaping perceptions of Indian cuisine while making a positive impact on the planet.
tl;dr:
Alejandro Medina honors Indian culinary traditions at Bibi Ji, blending authentic flavors with sustainable, local ingredients.
The restaurant features natural wines, challenging the notion that Indian food pairs best with beer.
Alejandro prioritizes regenerative agriculture, working with farmers who use organic and biodynamic methods.
Bibi Ji is raising funds on SMBX to support its expansion, operational growth, and financial restructuring.
Alejandro’s superpower is cultivating connection, using food and hospitality to bring people together and build community.
How to Develop Building Connections Through Food and Hospitality As a Superpower
Alejandro Medina’s superpower is cultivating connection—an ability to bring people together through food, wine, and hospitality. “For me, it’s really about bringing people together, kind of forgetting what’s going on in the world, just for that moment in time that we’re having a meal or we’re enjoying a bottle of wine,” he explained. His restaurant, Bibi Ji, isn’t just a dining experience—it’s a communal space where people feel welcome, appreciated, and connected.
Illustrative Story: Alejandro’s commitment to connection extends beyond his restaurant. Growing up in a Bolivian-American family, he learned the importance of giving back and strengthening communities. One of his most impactful experiences was donating clothes to local villages near his family’s ranch in Bolivia. This formative act of generosity shaped his perspective on hospitality—not just as a business, but as a way to create meaningful relationships and uplift others. At Bibi Ji, he carries this philosophy forward, treating every guest like family and ensuring his restaurant serves as a hub of warmth and belonging.
Tips to Develop This Superpower:
Embrace Open-Mindedness: Alejandro believes that learning never stops. Be curious about different cultures, foods, and perspectives.
Prioritize Genuine Interactions: Whether in business or daily life, take the time to connect with people on a personal level.
Practice Generosity: Give back in small or big ways—whether through hospitality, community service, or simple acts of kindness.
Create Shared Experiences: Whether it’s through food, conversation, or storytelling, find ways to bring people together in meaningful ways.
Stay Present: Engage fully in conversations and interactions, valuing each moment as an opportunity to strengthen bonds.
By following Alejandro Medina’s example and advice, you can make cultivating connection a skill. With practice and effort, you could make it a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world.
Remember, however, that research into success suggests that building on your own superpowers is more important than creating new ones or overcoming weaknesses. You do you!

Devin: What is your superpower?
Emily: Informed decision-making
Cities across the world are grappling with rising temperatures, making outdoor spaces increasingly unlivable. The urban heat island effect exacerbates the problem, and traditional cooling solutions often come with high energy costs or water consumption. ThermoShade, founded by Emily Dinino, offers an innovative alternative—a cooling technology that provides relief without requiring electricity or water.
ThermoShade’s high-tech shade panels use passive radiative cooling, leveraging phase change materials to absorb heat during the hottest parts of the day and recharge overnight. “We saw a gap in the market,” Emily explained. “Shade alone is not cutting it. People and animals need a solution that provides real relief, and we’re delivering just that.” These advanced panels can make shaded areas feel up to 20 degrees cooler than traditional awnings.
Emily developed ThermoShade while earning her MBA at UCLA. Inspired by firsthand experiences of extreme heat in Los Angeles, she and her team conducted over 100 interviews with scientists, engineers, and potential customers to refine the concept. “We realized that most existing solutions required electricity or water—resources that aren’t always available or sustainable,” Emily said. “By applying phase change materials in a new way, we created a cooling solution that’s both effective and accessible.”
Beyond urban environments, ThermoShade is exploring applications in agriculture, particularly for dairy farms where heat stress impacts cattle productivity. The company is currently conducting a pilot study with Fresno State to analyze how the technology can improve livestock health and efficiency.
ThermoShade is currently raising capital through a regulated investment crowdfunding campaign on MicroVentures. “We believe crowdfunding makes sense for us because people understand the challenges of extreme heat,” Emily said. “It’s an opportunity to engage the public in a solution they can benefit from directly.”
With climate change making extreme heat an increasingly urgent issue, innovative and sustainable solutions like ThermoShade are more critical than ever. By leveraging advanced materials and smart design, Emily and her team are helping cities, communities, and industries adapt to a warming world without exacerbating the problem.
tl;dr:
ThermoShade’s innovative panels use phase change materials to provide passive cooling, reducing heat by up to 20 degrees.
Emily Dinino developed ThermoShade during her MBA at UCLA, conducting extensive research to refine the technology.

A pilot study with Fresno State aims to assess the effectiveness of ThermoShade in agriculture, particularly for dairy cattle.
Emily’s superpower is informed decision-making—she synthesizes data, perspectives, and insights to drive innovation and solve complex challenges.
How to Develop Informed Decision-Making As a Superpower
Emily Dinino’s superpower is informed decision-making—the ability to synthesize data, perspectives, and insights to confidently determine the best course of action.
“Being a founder means navigating an overwhelming amount of input—from investors, customers, and advisors. I take in all that information, challenge assumptions, and make informed decisions that align with our mission,” Emily explained.
One defining moment of this ability occurred in her role as a finance manager at an ed-tech nonprofit. Tasked with developing a 10-year strategic plan, Emily had to balance competing priorities from the board, funders, co-founders, and department heads. By distilling complex financial and operational data into a cohesive model, she secured buy-in from all stakeholders, ensuring the plan’s success.
For those looking to develop this superpower, Emily offers the following insights:
Actively listen to diverse perspectives. Understand not just what people are saying, but why they believe in their approach.
Challenge assumptions. Question conventional wisdom to uncover the best path forward.
Use data to validate decisions. Gather and analyze information before committing to a course of action.
Stay confident in your expertise. Recognize that while advice is valuable, you know your business best.
Surround yourself with trusted mentors. Seek guidance from experienced individuals who can help refine your thinking.
By following Emily’s example and advice, you can make informed decision-making a skill. With practice and effort, you could make it a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world.
Remember, however, that research into success suggests that building on your own superpowers is more important than creating new ones or overcoming weaknesses. You do you!

Devin: What is your superpower?
Phillip: Faith-Driven Innovation
Traditional car dealerships have long been associated with high-pressure sales tactics and hidden fees. But Phillip Ibrahim, CEO of Imotobank, is changing that by pioneering a new model that prioritizes transparency, convenience, and customer empowerment.
When Phillip started selling cars online in 2001, he saw an opportunity to remove the unnecessary overhead costs that traditional dealerships pass onto customers. "What does this $20 million building add in value to the consumer?" he recalls asking himself. "And I couldn't answer anything positive other than the consumer has to pay for it."
Fast forward to today, and Imotobank operates on a radically different model. Customers can browse, consult, and finalize their purchases through a streamlined digital experience. "Within 12 or 15 minutes, we have a computer meeting with them, we source a car if we don't have one already, and we fill the order," Phillip explains. "Five to seven days later, the car is delivered to their doorstep."
Beyond convenience, Phillip's model is designed to make car buying fairer. "Most car dealers don't give that level of transparency, and we do," he says. "We share screens with customers, show them the best wholesale transactions, and explain why each option is priced the way it is." This consultative, open-book approach ensures that buyers understand what they’re paying for—without the usual dealership markup games.
But Imotobank’s ambitions go beyond selling cars. The company is currently raising capital through a regulated investment crowdfunding campaign on Netcapital. With the funds, Phillip plans to unite 50 to 100 independent dealers under Imotobank’s innovative umbrella. This will enable them to share technology, reduce costs, and provide better financing options for underserved consumers. "We want to create a captive finance company that doesn't prey on the consumer but gives them a reasonable rate," he explains.
Phillip’s vision for Imotobank isn’t just about making car buying easier—it’s about leveling the playing field for both consumers and independent dealers. "The future of the car business isn’t static listings on a website," he says. "It’s giving people proper advice, full transparency, and fair pricing."

Phillip Ibrahim founded Imotobank to revolutionize car buying with a transparent, customer-first approach.
Imotobank’s digital model allows customers to buy cars online in minutes with full pricing transparency.
The company is raising capital on Netcapital to expand its network of independent dealers and services.
Phillip’s superpower—faith—has helped him embrace risk, rebuild after failure, and drive innovation.
His story teaches us to trust opportunities, learn from setbacks, and lead with integrity and purpose.
How to Develop Faith-Driven Innovation As a Superpower
Phillip Ibrahim’s superpower is rooted in faith—faith in himself, his ideas, and in divine guidance. "I trust that God has been good to me," he says, emphasizing that his ability to recognize new opportunities and adapt to challenges stems from this deep-seated belief. "Even if I make a mistake, He kind of fixes them up for me and makes them go more smoothly."
Summary of the Superpower:
Phillip’s faith-driven mindset has allowed him to embrace risk and innovation with confidence. He describes his superpower as recognizing opportunities and having the courage to pursue them. "I’m the product of two engineers, and I ended up having two kids who are both studying mechanical engineering. My superpower is recognizing interesting and new things, being totally unafraid to try them." His faith acts as a guiding force, allowing him to navigate uncertainty with trust rather than fear.
Illustrative Story:
One of the most defining moments of Phillip’s career came when he was at the peak of his business in 2006, selling 100 cars a month on eBay. "I never thought we were going anywhere but up," he recalls. However, a sudden system failure shut down all of his eBay accounts overnight, leaving his business with no foundation. The collapse was financially and emotionally devastating. "I had a $2 million local line of credit, a mortgage, and was charging $350,000 a month on my Amex card. Imagine how it felt to come crashing down." Instead of giving up, Phillip leaned on his faith. "I prayed, and I felt an epiphany: If I put all my energy into building something new and great, it would be far more productive than fighting the past." This resilience allowed him to rebuild his business into the innovative Imotobank model that is thriving today.
Tips for Developing This Superpower:
Trust in the Process: Be open to new opportunities and trust that challenges will lead to growth.
Embrace Failure as a Lesson: View setbacks as stepping stones rather than roadblocks.
Take Calculated Risks: Fear often holds people back from innovation—push past hesitation with confidence.
Stay Rooted in Your Values: Whether faith-based or principle-driven, let your core beliefs guide decisions.
Focus on Building, Not Fighting: Energy spent on creation is always more valuable than energy spent on conflict.
By following Phillip Ibrahim’s example and advice, you can make faith-driven innovation a skill. With practice and effort, you could make it a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world.
Remember, however, that research into success suggests that building on your own superpowers is more important than creating new ones or overcoming weaknesses. You do you!

Devin: What is your superpower?
Kendall: Ability to talk to people and convince them to do things.
The passage of the JOBS Act in 2012 opened new doors for entrepreneurs, enabling them to raise funds from the general public through regulation crowdfunding. This shift has been nothing short of a game changer for small businesses that previously struggled to access capital. Securities attorney and entrepreneur Kendall Almerico has been at the forefront of this movement, helping companies navigate the regulatory landscape and successfully raise funds.
Kendall first recognized the potential of crowdfunding during the 2008 financial crisis when he stumbled upon Kickstarter and saw the Pebble Watch raise $10 million without offering investors equity. This moment sparked a realization. “If they ever pass a law that allows you to raise money online by selling securities, I am going to pivot my entire practice and do nothing but this,” he recalled. That law came in the form of the JOBS Act, and Kendall made good on his promise.
Since then, Kendall has worked with businesses of all sizes to leverage regulation crowdfunding. The beauty of this approach, he explains, is that it democratizes investment opportunities. “The average Joe could invest $50, $100, or $200. And I just knew it would be a game changer for small business,” he said.
While major crowdfunding success stories make headlines, Kendall emphasizes that regulation crowdfunding is most impactful for small businesses looking to raise modest sums—often between $50,000 and $100,000. Many of these companies would struggle to secure a bank loan or venture capital investment, but through crowdfunding, they can tap into their existing customer base and community support. “When you pass the hat at church and everyone puts in $5 or $10, at the end of the day, there’s a lot of money in that hat. This is the same thing,” he explained.
One of the most important aspects of running a successful crowdfunding campaign, according to Kendall, is structuring it in a way that is attractive to investors. “You can go out and basically say, ‘I’m going to raise money at a billion-dollar valuation for my brand new company that has no employees and has never sold anything.’ You can do that. No one’s going to stop you, but no one’s going to invest.” Instead, he advises entrepreneurs to take a staged approach—starting with smaller raises, proving their model, and then scaling up to larger fundraising rounds.
Kendall’s insights reflect the power of regulation crowdfunding to level the playing field for small businesses and everyday investors. By giving communities the opportunity to support the businesses they love, this model is reshaping how capital flows and who gets access to it. As regulation crowdfunding continues to grow, more entrepreneurs are discovering its potential to turn their visions into reality.
tl;dr:
Kendall shares how the JOBS Act transformed access to capital for small businesses.
Crowdfunding enables everyday investors to support businesses, democratizing investment opportunities.
Successful campaigns require strong marketing, clear messaging, and reasonable valuations.
Kendall’s superpower—persuasion—helps entrepreneurs communicate effectively and raise funds.
The episode concludes with Kendall sharing insights on navigating crowdfunding regulations and investor relations.
How to Develop The Power of Persuasion As a Superpower
Kendall’s superpower is persuasion. With a natural ability to connect with people and communicate ideas clearly, he has helped countless entrepreneurs navigate the complexities of regulation crowdfunding.
“My superpower is very simple,” Kendall said. “I’m incredibly lucky to have been born with this ability to talk to people and convince them to do things.” This talent, honed through years of experience in television, radio, and trial law, has positioned him as a leading expert in the crowdfunding space. He believes that 90 to 95% of success in regulation crowdfunding comes down to marketing and messaging—skills that rely heavily on persuasive communication.
One example of Kendall’s persuasive prowess occurred when he helped a cannabis company become the first U.S.-based, plant-touching cannabis business to receive SEC approval for a Regulation A offering. Many doubted the legality of such an offering, but Kendall was confident in the regulatory framework. When the SEC initially questioned an innovative investor perk—a live-streamed cannabis plant named after each investor—Kendall engaged in a strategic dialogue with regulators. Though the perk was ultimately removed, the process exemplified his ability to challenge norms and push boundaries while staying within legal constraints. His communication skills helped the company secure approval and raise funds despite industry skepticism.
For those looking to develop persuasion as a personal strength, Kendall’s approach offers key insights:
Speak in clear, relatable terms. Avoid jargon and complex language when explaining ideas.
Listen actively. Effective persuasion starts with understanding your audience’s concerns and motivations.
Be confident, but flexible. Know when to push forward and when to adjust your approach.
Tell compelling stories. Engaging narratives make complex ideas more accessible and memorable.
Practice regularly. Persuasion is a skill that improves with experience and continuous learning.
By following Kendall’s example and advice, you can make persuasion a skill. With practice and effort, you could make it a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world.
Remember, however, that research into success suggests that building on your own superpowers is more important than creating new ones or overcoming weaknesses. You do you!

Devin: What is your superpower?
Brigit: I would say authenticity.
The power of social entrepreneurship to drive meaningful change in the world is undeniable. At the Miller Center for Social Entrepreneurship, the mission is clear: leverage market forces to end poverty. Executive Director Brigit Helms leads the charge, helping entrepreneurs apply business principles to solve social and environmental challenges.
"The purpose of a business is purpose," Brigit explained. "The primary reason for having your business is to solve a social or environmental problem that you see around you in your community."
Miller Center’s impact speaks for itself. Since its founding, it has accelerated over 1,500 social enterprises across 100 countries. With a strong emphasis on women’s economic power and climate resilience, the center has catalyzed transformative change in communities worldwide. Brigit highlighted the success of Someone Somewhere, a company based in Mexico that sources artisan work from some of the country’s poorest regions. By securing a major contract with Delta Airlines, the company provided thousands of artisans with the opportunity to triple their income.
The center’s success is measured in tangible results. In 2020, Miller Center set a goal to double the number of lives improved through its entrepreneur network from 75 million to 150 million by 2025. They surpassed that goal ahead of schedule, reaching over 180 million lives impacted. Additionally, entrepreneurs in their programs have seen remarkable growth in fundraising, with capital raised per entrepreneur rising from an average of $500,000 to $2.1 million.
Beyond these achievements, Brigit envisions a future where social entrepreneurship is no longer a niche concept but an integral part of all business endeavors. "One of my personal dreams is that all entrepreneurship can be considered social entrepreneurship," she said. "That we don’t even have to use that qualifier."
As Miller Center looks toward 2030, it aims to foster a stronger global community among its network of entrepreneurs. The shift from transactional support to an interconnected platform of changemakers aligns with the growing demand for community-driven solutions.
For those looking to engage, opportunities abound. Miller Center’s mentor program allows seasoned professionals to guide emerging social entrepreneurs, while its venture philanthropy fund provides catalytic capital to scalable ventures. As Brigit pointed out, investing in social entrepreneurship creates lasting impact, making it an appealing option for those seeking meaningful ways to contribute to a better world.
Miller Center’s work proves that entrepreneurship is more than just a pathway to financial success—it is a powerful tool for tackling society’s most pressing issues.
tl;dr:
Miller Center for Social Entrepreneurship accelerates social enterprises to end poverty by leveraging business principles.
The center has impacted over 180 million lives and helped entrepreneurs raise significant capital.
Women’s economic power and climate resilience are key focus areas for the center’s programs.
Brigit’s superpower is authenticity, which she uses to foster trust and drive meaningful leadership.
Miller Center is shifting toward building a global community of entrepreneurs to drive systemic change.
How to Develop Authenticity As a Superpower
Brigit Helms believes her superpower is authenticity. "What you see is pretty much what you get with me," she explained. She has built a career by fostering environments where people feel comfortable bringing their whole selves to the table. Brigit embraces cognitive diversity and encourages open discussions where differing opinions are valued. "Even if you’re the only one in the room with a different opinion, you should feel comfortable voicing it," she said. This dedication to authenticity has helped her build strong teams and drive impactful change.
An Example of Authentic Leadership
When Brigit arrived at Miller Center in 2020, the pandemic made traditional strategic planning impossible. Instead of gathering people in a room for brainstorming, she adapted. Breaking the process into smaller, virtual conversations, she ensured that over 100 voices worldwide contributed to Miller Center’s strategic direction. "We ended up with a better product because we included perspectives that might have been overlooked in a typical process," she reflected. Her ability to pivot while staying true to her leadership style reinforced her commitment to authenticity.
Tips for Developing Authenticity
Build Trust Through Vulnerability: Be open about mistakes and ask for help when needed.
Encourage Diverse Perspectives: Welcome differing opinions and create space for honest discussions.
Foster Psychological Safety: Ensure that team members feel comfortable sharing their thoughts without fear.
Practice Self-Reflection: Regularly evaluate whether your actions align with your core values.
Embrace Change While Staying True to Yourself: Adapt to new challenges without compromising integrity.
By following Brigit’s example and advice, you can make authenticity a skill. With practice and effort, you could make it a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world.
Remember, however, that research into success suggests that building on your own superpowers is more important than creating new ones or overcoming weaknesses. You do you!

Devin: What is your superpower?
George: Having steady hand and being a reliable, stabilizing force in my organization, but also externally for our customers as well.
Access to capital remains one of the most significant challenges for small businesses, particularly for those led by underrepresented founders. Honeycomb Credit, an SEC-registered FINRA member crowdfunding portal, is changing that by enabling everyday investors to support businesses in their communities while earning a return.
George Cook, Co-Founder and CEO of Honeycomb Credit, understands the barriers entrepreneurs face. Coming from a family that has operated a community bank for over 130 years, he saw firsthand the difficulties businesses encounter when seeking funding. "Small businesses are more than just a number," George explained. "Yes, financials are critical, but so are qualitative values like how a business treats its customers and employees."
Unlike traditional banks, which rely primarily on financial metrics, Honeycomb Credit takes a community-driven approach. Entrepreneurs who apply for funding go through a vetting process before launching campaigns on the platform. Investors, often local supporters, vote with their wallets by investing as little as $100 in businesses they believe in. This creates a dual-layer assessment—both financial and community validation—that increases the likelihood of long-term success.
One of the platform’s defining characteristics is its flexibility. Unlike banks that impose rigid repayment structures, Honeycomb allows investors and business owners to collaborate on solutions if a business faces financial difficulties. George described a recent situation where an entrepreneur needed to restructure payments: "We take a lot of pride in our democratic approach. Investors, who believe in the business, get to weigh in on whether to adjust terms or pursue collections. This gives businesses a chance to stabilize and recover, often leading to a better outcome for both sides."
Beyond financing, Honeycomb is making a significant impact in supporting diverse entrepreneurs. Over 80% of the businesses on the platform are minority-, women-, or veteran-owned, highlighting the extent to which traditional funding sources have overlooked these groups. "To know that Honeycomb is playing a role in leveling the playing field is really rewarding," George said.
With the recent acquisition of Raise Green, a platform focused on climate-related investments, Honeycomb is expanding its impact investing opportunities. This move aligns with its mission of democratizing access to capital while allowing individuals to invest in alignment with their values. "Impact investing isn’t just for the wealthy," George emphasized. "With Honeycomb, anyone can invest in their community and in causes they care about."
Honeycomb Credit’s model is proving that financial returns and community impact can go hand in hand. By empowering entrepreneurs and mobilizing local investors, it’s fostering economic growth while giving individuals the opportunity to be part of the success stories in their communities.
tl;dr:
Honeycomb Credit empowers small businesses by enabling community-driven investments with as little as $100.
George emphasizes the importance of qualitative factors in assessing a business’s long-term success.
The platform fosters financial inclusivity, with over 80% of funded businesses being minority- or women-owned.
Honeycomb Credit’s acquisition of Raise Green expands its impact investing opportunities in the climate sector.
George’s superpower, stability under pressure, helps him lead through challenges and inspire his team.
How to Develop Stability Under Pressure As a Superpower
George’s superpower is stability under pressure. As the Co-Founder and CEO of Honeycomb Credit, he has cultivated the ability to remain steady amid the constant ups and downs of entrepreneurship.
"Being an entrepreneur means you can have the best call of your life in the morning and face an existential crisis by the afternoon," George explained. His ability to maintain composure, lift his team when times are tough, and stay humble when things go well has been key to his success. He believes that leadership requires a stabilizing presence, both for employees and the small business owners Honeycomb supports.
A prime example of his superpower in action came during Honeycomb’s acquisition of Raise Green. With significant changes happening within the company, George faced the challenge of ensuring his team remained aligned and engaged. "One of my mentors told me, ‘If you repeat yourself so many times that you’re sick of it, that’s when the team is just starting to hear you,’" he shared. By consistently reinforcing the vision and expectations, he provided clarity and direction during a crucial transition, keeping both employees and stakeholders focused on the long-term mission.
For those looking to develop this superpower, George offered practical advice:
Stay in the moment. Avoid letting your mind race ahead to the next challenge. Focus on solving one problem at a time.
Use deep breathing. Before entering a meeting, take three deep breaths to ground yourself and reset your focus.
Communicate with consistency. Repeat key messages frequently to ensure your team fully understands and internalizes them.
Stay humble. Celebrate wins but don’t let them cloud your judgment. Likewise, don’t let failures shake your confidence.
By following George’s example and advice, you can make stability under pressure a skill. With practice and effort, you could make it a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world.
Remember, however, that research into success suggests that building on your own superpowers is more important than creating new ones or overcoming weaknesses. You do you!

Devin: What is your superpower?
Dorian: True empathy toward others would be what I consider my true superpower.
Small businesses in underserved communities often struggle to access the capital they need to grow. Traditional banks and investment firms frequently overlook these businesses, leaving them without the necessary resources to thrive. Recognizing this critical gap, FundingHope has stepped in as a solution. As a FINRA-registered, SEC-approved investment crowdfunding portal, FundingHope connects investors with small business owners dedicated to making a difference in their communities.
Dorian Dickinson, CEO and Managing Director of FundingHope, understands the power of community investment. “We’re here to step in to help democratize access to capital to the founders who need it the most,” Dorian explained. By prioritizing businesses aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), FundingHope ensures that investments contribute to both economic and social progress.
One of the companies currently raising funds on the platform is hūmNET, a startup that has developed a unique mobile app designed to foster human connection. “They’re from a rural community in Vermont and recognize the importance of people being connected,” Dorian shared. Another business, NEIGHBR, focuses on building affordable, eco-friendly housing, blending sustainability with community development. These businesses exemplify the type of impactful enterprises that FundingHope seeks to support.
Dorian’s journey into crowdfunding was shaped by his experience working in rural and conflict-stricken regions. When the COVID-19 pandemic halted his international development work, he turned his attention to the economic struggles of small businesses in the United States. “It always circled back to either a lack of investment or disinvestment in the communities and the businesses in the communities,” he noted. This realization fueled his mission to create a platform that fosters local job creation and economic empowerment.
Impact investing through crowdfunding offers an alternative to traditional philanthropy, allowing individuals to support businesses without depleting their financial resources. “When we invest wisely, we’re not limited because the money comes back and we can do it again and again,” Dorian emphasized. This sustainable model of investment enables communities to grow without reliance on external aid.
FundingHope stands as a testament to the potential of crowdfunding in reshaping the investment landscape. By channeling funds into businesses that create tangible social impact, it provides both financial returns and meaningful change. As more investors recognize the benefits of impact crowdfunding, platforms like FundingHope are poised to drive lasting transformation in disadvantaged communities.
tl;dr:
FundingHope empowers small businesses in disadvantaged communities by providing access to investment capital.
Companies like hūmNET and NEIGHBR are raising funds on FundingHope to drive social impact and innovation.
Impact investing enables individuals to support meaningful causes while potentially earning financial returns.
Dorian’s superpower is true empathy, which helps him connect with and support entrepreneurs.
Practicing empathy daily by engaging with diverse communities can foster deeper understanding and meaningful action.
How to Develop True Empathy As a Superpower
Dorian’s superpower is true empathy—the ability to deeply understand others’ struggles and take meaningful action to help them.
“I actually put myself in someone else’s shoes, really understand what they’re going through, how they feel when they’re with their family, how they embrace and work through failures,” Dorian explained. His ability to truly connect with people, especially founders from disadvantaged communities, allows him to guide them toward solutions and success.
An example of Dorian’s empathy in action is his work with small business owners who lack traditional financial support. Coming from a lower-middle-class background, he understands firsthand the challenges of financial insecurity. “When I’m engaging with a founder who is coming from a disadvantaged community, I relate to them. I understand their position of not having that friends and family network.” By helping entrepreneurs think outside the box to expand their networks, he empowers them to grow both their businesses and their communities.
To develop true empathy as a personal strength, Dorian suggests:
Focus on others: Take yourself out of the equation and truly listen to people’s experiences.
Step into their world: Engage with individuals from different backgrounds to gain firsthand perspective.
Feel their struggles: Try to emotionally connect with their challenges to better understand their needs.
Provide solutions or encouragement: Offer support in meaningful ways, whether through action or simply by giving hope.
By following Dorian’s example and advice, you can make true empathy a skill. With practice and effort, you could make it a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world.
Remember, however, that research into success suggests that building on your own superpowers is more important than creating new ones or overcoming weaknesses. You do you!
