Devin: Enid, what is your superpower?
Enid: I hope this doesn't sound sappy, but in a word, love.
Devin: John, what's your superpower?
John: Look at your circumstances; just observe them, don't judge them. Just have a self-awareness.
In today’s episode, I had the pleasure of speaking with Enid Futterman and John Isaacs, the co-founders of IMBY, a revolutionary platform for hyperlocal journalism. IMBY, which stands for "In My Back Yard," empowers communities to create their own digital newspapers, promoting citizen journalism and community engagement.
Enid explained, “IMBY is a hyperlocal network of websites for citizen journalism. It allows any community to create its own digital newspaper.” This model not only fills the gap left by the decline of traditional local newspapers but also provides a space for community members to share news, opinions, and events directly relevant to their locality.
John elaborated on the origins of IMBY, sharing how their initial success with a local community magazine in Hudson, New York, inspired them to create a scalable platform. “The demise of local journalism is not just an absence of information but also a threat to democracy. Local news plays an enormously important role and its diminishment is a serious issue for the preservation of democracy,” John emphasized. This sentiment underscores the critical role IMBY aims to play in sustaining informed and connected communities.
One of the most compelling aspects of IMBY is its support for citizen activists. Enid highlighted, “One of the biggest uses is among citizen activists who are trying to advocate for a cause, often aligned with our mission to build community with the values of localism, sustainability, and justice.”
Currently, IMBY is running a crowdfunding campaign on Honeycomb Credit to expand its reach. Enid noted, “Honeycomb's focus on crowdsourcing local capital aligns perfectly with our mission to crowdsource local news.”
IMBY’s innovative approach not only addresses the loss of local newspapers but also reinvigorates the essence of community journalism. Their platform represents a beacon of hope for communities striving to stay informed and engaged in an era of media consolidation and declining local news sources.
Through platforms like IMBY, the power of the press is truly placed back in the hands of the people, fostering a more democratic and connected society.

Devin: Bill, what is your superpower?
Bill: Well, if I have one, it has something to do with optimism about scientific innovation and being able to gather teams of people.
Devin: Barry, what's your superpower?
Barry: Our theme in Rotary this year is inspiration. I'm very fortunate that when I speak with Rotarians, I can deliver a message that really touches their hearts.
For today’s episode of Superpowers for Good, I had the privilege of speaking with two remarkable leaders: Bill Gates, Chair of the Gates Foundation, and Barry Rassin, former President of Rotary International. We spoke in May 2019. The episode is significant enough to justify sharing anew.
Our conversation delved into the collaborative efforts that are bringing us closer to eradicating polio, showcasing a model of partnership that has far-reaching implications for global health. Five years on, the work to eradicate polio continues.
Bill shared the profound impact of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI), a partnership between the Gates Foundation, Rotary International, UNICEF, WHO, and CDC, initiated in 1988. He emphasized, "Getting rid of a disease is kind of the ultimate goal for all these infectious diseases. It's only happened once before with smallpox... the possibility that no kids will ever be paralyzed again even without having to spend lots and lots of money... appears within sight." His passion for ensuring that no child suffers from polio, especially in developing countries, highlighted the critical role of coordinated global efforts.
Barry echoed this sentiment, reflecting on the strength of the partnership with the Gates Foundation. "The beauty of it is that we recognize that when we do things together, we can do so much more. The GPEI partnership... works so well because we were working together," he noted. Barry also emphasized the importance of continuing this collaboration to tackle other global health challenges once polio is eradicated.
This episode not only underscored the progress made in the fight against polio but also illustrated the broader potential of such partnerships. As Bill mentioned, "Polio has had to pioneer a lot of things... mapping out where the kids are turned out to be a key tactic." This legacy of innovation and collaboration sets a precedent for addressing other infectious diseases and health crises.
Reflecting on the discussion, it is clear that the eradication of polio is within our grasp, thanks to the unwavering dedication of leaders like Bill and Barry. Their vision and collaboration offer hope and a roadmap for tackling other global health challenges, making our world a safer and healthier place for future generations.

Devin: What is your superpower?
Will: I can teach myself anything.
In today’s episode of Superpowers for Good, I had the pleasure of speaking with Will Wiseman, CEO and Co-Founder of Climatize. Will's journey from witnessing the 2019 climate strikes in Barcelona to founding a groundbreaking crowdfunding platform for renewable energy is nothing short of inspiring.
During our conversation, Will shared a pivotal moment from the climate strikes that sparked his realization. "Seeing over 100,000 people protesting for climate action, I was struck by the sad realization that traditional activism lacked the tangible change necessary to solve this macro problem," he said. This insight led him to create Climatize, a platform enabling anyone to invest in renewable energy projects with as little as $5.
Climatize’s mission is clear: to make impact investing accessible to everyone. “Climate change is an all-hands-on-deck problem,” Will emphasized. “We need everybody at any capacity to become a participant.” By allowing investments to start at just $5, Climatize ensures that virtually anyone can contribute to combating climate change and be part of the energy transition.
The success of Climatize speaks volumes. Since its launch in May 2023, the platform has catalyzed nearly $3.5 million of investments into 11 solar and storage projects across seven states. These projects are projected to avoid emissions equivalent to 65 million vehicle miles. Investors are not only contributing to environmental solutions but also seeing tangible impacts of their investments.
One of the standout features of Climatize is the transparency it offers. Investors can see the direct impact of their contributions, from project development to installation. This level of engagement fosters trust and encourages more people to participate. “Knowing that your money went and helped this family as well as created environmental impact is what we've found to be very catalytic,” Will explained.
Will’s dedication and innovative approach have turned Climatize into a beacon for those wanting to make a real difference. As he said, “This is one of the largest wealth creation opportunities of our lifetime, and it’s incredibly important that everybody has the potential to participate as an active stakeholder in the energy transition.”

In today’s episode of "Superpowers for Good," I had the pleasure of hosting Chris Miller, Founding Board Member and Chair of the National Coalition for Community Capital. We delved into an exciting discussion about diversified community investment funds, a vital tool for anyone interested in building vibrant, resilient communities.
Chris eloquently introduced us to the concept and evolution of these funds, explaining their transformation from a theoretical concept to a practical solution energized by investment crowdfunding. As Chris noted, these funds are about harnessing local capital to solve local problems effectively, and he shared how these funds enable regular people to invest in the well-being of their communities.
“The background is that there's been a fleeing of the idea that capital is controlled locally to it now being controlled by a very small number of people who don't live in your community,” Chris explained. He passionately argued for the return of local capital control, which investment crowdfunding facilitates, allowing community members to contribute to local businesses and projects.
Moreover, Chris highlighted the dual focus of these funds on real estate and community businesses, emphasizing that while 60% of investments must be in real estate, the remaining can flexibly support local enterprises. This structure not only addresses urgent needs like housing but also bolsters local businesses, crucial for community vibrancy.
One of the most compelling parts of our conversation was when Chris discussed the potential of these funds to make significant, tangible impacts: “Even a few million dollars here or there, you're talking real money, right?” This statement highlights the practical benefits and real-world applications of community investment funds, highlighting their role in revitalizing and transforming communities.
As we wrapped up, Chris’s enthusiasm was palpable. He shared his excitement about upcoming projects in Detroit and Cincinnati, where these funds are set to make a substantial impact. It's clear from our conversation that diversified community investment funds not only offer a promising avenue for economic development and community resilience but also represent a profound shift towards more equitable and locally-focused investment strategies.
For anyone interested in sustainable community development and economic resilience, this episode is a treasure trove of insights and actionable ideas, all thanks to Chris’s deep expertise and commitment to community capital.

While working his day job in Adrian, he also introduced and championed Michigan’s MILE – an investment crowdfunding exemption that served as a national model, and he currently has introduced legislation that would create a first-in-the-nation investment incentive available to any state resident regardless of wealth.
During 2023, Chris worked extensively on a new program the International Economic Development Council developed called the Economic Recovery Corps. Funded with Cares Act dollars from the Economic Development Administration, 65 ERC Fellows were awarded to 65 hosts from across the county. The Fellows will work full time with their hosts for 2.5 years addressing underserved communities in a variety of economic and community development projects. Devin: what is your superpower?
Samantha: The entrepreneurial journey, especially in small pharma, can be crushing at times. One of my superpowers is that I have developed the ability to not be torn down, not be stressed out in the face of sometimes heavy, discouraging news. That has allowed me to persevere.
Devin: What is your superpower?
Kate: I think my superpower is optimism. I really believe there's no problem that cannot be solved.
In today's episode of Superpowers for Good, I had the pleasure of speaking with Samantha Miller and Kate Voyten from Cadence OTC. Samantha, the co-founder and CEO, shared fascinating insights about their mission to make contraceptives more accessible.
Samantha explained that Cadence OTC is not just a business; it's a crusade to empower individuals by increasing over-the-counter access to safe and affordable contraceptives. This access is not only about convenience but also about empowering individuals with choices regarding their reproductive health.
One point that Samantha passionately made stands out: "We're in a unique position to fill this huge market need." This statement underscores the gap Cadence OTC aims to bridge by making contraceptives available next to everyday items in drugstores, a revolutionary shift from the prescription-only model.
Their journey involves intricate collaboration with the FDA and extensive consumer education to ensure that the switch to over-the-counter access is both effective and safe. Samantha shared the complexities involved in this transition, noting, "It involves a lot of consumer studies as well as intensive collaboration with FDA."
But perhaps the most powerful aspect of our conversation was the broader impact of their work. Samantha eloquently highlighted the potential societal benefits: reducing unintended pregnancies and thereby improving the lives of women and families across the nation. "The big-picture goal that we have of reducing unintended pregnancy for everyone and making sure that all children are wanted and intended is so important," she stated.
As we continued our discussion, it was clear that the work Cadence OTC is doing could reshape the landscape of women's health. By making birth control as accessible as buying a pack of gum, they are not just selling a product; they are fostering a movement towards greater personal agency and health equity. This is more than health care reform; it's a cultural shift towards empowering individuals to make informed choices about their bodies and futures.
We delved into the Wefunder crowdfunding campaign launched by Cadence OTC. Kate Voyten shared that this campaign marks the first open opportunity for public investment in their transformative initiative to bring birth control over the counter. This effort not only aims to improve access to contraceptives but also targets what Kate described as "contraceptive deserts" across the United States—areas with limited access to crucial health products. The campaign is a call to action, inviting everyone to join in supporting a mission with both immediate impact and a visionary long-term goal, illustrating a potent blend of entrepreneurial spirit and commitment to public health.

Devin: What is your superpower?
Sara: I tend to just bless the heck out of people because it's genuine that I love them.
For today’s episode, I had the privilege of speaking with Sara Schley, a passionate author and filmmaker, about her compelling journey living with bipolar disorder. Sara deeply explores this topic in her upcoming documentary, BrainStorm the Film. Sara's story is not only inspiring but also a powerful beacon for change in the mental health landscape.
Sara explained how her personal struggles and the challenges she faced in obtaining the correct diagnosis led to her mission to "crush the stigma and maximize healing" for those living with bipolar disorder and their loved ones. Her film, BrainStorm, inspired by her own life experiences, aims to save lives by fostering a deeper understanding of bipolar disorder, which is often shrouded in misconception and stigma.
The key idea here is the profound impact that accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment can have on individuals with bipolar disorder. Sara shared, "It took me 25 years and five psychiatrists to finally get the diagnosis that saved my life." This statement highlights the critical need for improved awareness and knowledge among both the public and healthcare professionals about the bipolar spectrum, which includes conditions that do not necessarily present with extreme mania.
Further, Sara illuminated how the film weaves together powerful stories from individuals like herself and cutting-edge science to portray the reality of living with bipolar disorder. This integration of personal narratives with scientific insights serves as a testament to the resilience and potential for recovery that can arise with correct diagnosis and treatment.
Living with bipolar disorder, as Sara poignantly described, can be a harrowing experience, especially when misdiagnosed. Her own journey of highs and lows, marked by periods of severe depression and cognitive dysfunction, underscores the necessity of destigmatizing mental health issues and promoting accurate medical responses.
Through BrainStorm, Sara aims to bring visibility to the experiences of those living with bipolar disorder, encouraging a more empathetic and informed approach to mental health that transcends mere labels. Her work not only aims to educate but also to empower individuals and their families to seek help and advocate for proper care.
As we wrapped up this episode, Sara's message was clear: understanding and treating bipolar disorder can dramatically change lives, turning despair into hope and dysfunction into stability. Her dedication to this cause is a vivid reminder of the power of resilience and the importance of compassion in the face of mental health challenges.

In today's episode, I explored the unique qualities that Sara brings to her work and advocacy. As someone who has navigated the challenges of living with bipolar disorder, she has developed a profound sense of compassion, discipline, gratitude, and emotional fearlessness. These attributes are not just survival mechanisms but have become superpowers in their own right, enabling her to lead with empathy and inspire others in her projects and advocacy work.

Filmmaker and Author, BrainStorm the Film
About BrainStorm the Film: Inspired by the book BrainStorm: From Broken to Blessed on the Bipolar Spectrum, Sara Schley’s searing memoir, BrainStorm the Film is a full-length broadcast documentary that will transform the landscape around bipolar as we know it. The word bipolar conjures up images of wild highs, delusions, all-night sprees, and sudden mood crashes. But this manic-depressive behavior, known as bipolar I, exists only at one extreme end of what we now know as the bipolar spectrum. People whose brains fall elsewhere on the spectrum — bipolar II and others — experience severe, life-threatening depression, but do not exhibit classic mania. Since bipolar II depression can look like unipolar depression, misdiagnosis is rampant. In fact, one out of four people diagnosed with depression actually have a bipolar brain – and the antidepressant drugs they are prescribed can …

Devin: What is your superpower?
Sujay: The first one would have to be resilience. That's the biggest quality that I have. That sort of kept me going in this journey as an entrepreneur.
In today's episode of "Superpowers for Good," I had the pleasure of speaking with Sujay Suresh Kumar, the co-founder and CEO of Lilu, Inc. Our conversation unveiled groundbreaking advancements in breastfeeding technology that are not just innovative but are reshaping the postpartum experience for mothers globally.
Sujay participated in the Kinect Capital Live Pitch on Superpowers for Good in March, winning the Judges Choice Award. This resulted in a $500 crowdfunding investment from The Super Crowd, Inc., a public benefit corporation.
Sujay explained how conventional breast pumps have largely been unchanged for decades, often resulting in painful and inefficient milk extraction. "Moms have been experiencing issues with breast pumping. It's a painful process, making motherhood more miserable," Sujay shared. This revelation highlighted a significant gap in women's health technology—a gap that Lilu is determined to bridge.
Under Sujay's leadership, Lilu has developed the Omni Breast Pump, which incorporates patented breast massage technology. This isn't just an incremental improvement; it's a leap forward. The massage feature mimics the natural actions of a baby, significantly enhancing milk yield by stimulating milk-producing glands. "What we're doing differently is using our proprietary massage technology to add that extra element of comfort and stimulation to the breast," he explained. This technology helps mothers produce up to 55% more milk, alleviating common issues like clogged ducts and mastitis.
But Lilu's innovation doesn't stop at hardware. They are also pioneering a lactation tracking app, the Milksense Tracker, which uses machine learning algorithms to provide actionable insights into a mother's lactation and well-being. This digital tool helps both mothers and healthcare providers by offering data-driven feedback and support, thereby improving both physical and mental health outcomes.
Reflecting on the broader impact, Sujay remarked, "Helping moms understand their lactation and all the factors around this is going to be very important." This approach not only supports mothers in sustaining breastfeeding but also alleviates the economic burden associated with inadequate breastfeeding solutions.
As I spoke with Sujay, his passion for making a tangible difference in the lives of mothers and their babies was palpable. It's clear that through innovation and empathy, Lilu is setting a new standard in women’s health, making the journey of motherhood a little easier and a lot more empowering.

10. Kumar emphasizes resilience and empathy as his superpowers, advising others on the importance of remembering the impact of their work when facing obstacles, also offering information on how to engage with Lilu through their website and social media for those interested in their products and app.
How to Develop Resilience As a Superpower
Sujay identifies his superpowers as resilience and empathy. I asked him to help us better understand resilience.
Resilience, as Sujay describes it, is essential for navigating the rollercoaster journey of entrepreneurship. It's about maintaining your mission's focus despite the daily challenges and setbacks. This quality has not only sustained him through tough times but has also fueled his drive to innovate and support women's health through his company's products.
One compelling story Sujay shared that illustrates his resilience involved his time in Shenzhen, China. In 2016, he relocated there to accelerate his company's product development through the Hax hardware accelerator program. Despite facing significant language and cultural barriers, he spent two years on the ground, forging key manufacturing partnerships to bring his product to market. This phase was crucial in overcoming logistical and operational challenges to meet their product launch goals, demonstrating his superpower of resilience in action.
To develop resilience, Sujay suggests consistently reminding oneself of the impact your work has on others. For him, revisiting customer testimonials and recognizing the positive changes his products bring to mothers' lives reinforces the purpose behind his efforts. This practice helps to navigate the ups and downs of entrepreneurship and build a mindset that can withstand adversity.
By following Sujay's example and advice, you can make resilience a skill. With practice and effort, you could make it a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world.
Remember, however, that research into success suggests that building on your own superpowers is more important than creating new ones or overcoming weaknesses. You do you!

Devin: What is your superpower?
Steph: I think it's so important that we see the value in people, that we see people. I think that something that's been developed in me, is to see people and to honor them and to see their humanity.
In today's episode of Superpowers for Good, I had the privilege of speaking with Steph Page, the Executive Director and Co-Founder of Stories Foundation. Steph's pioneering approach to addressing human trafficking through business caught my attention, and I believe it will inspire you too.
Steph introduced us to an extraordinary project — the Storyteller Café. This isn't just any café; it's a beacon of hope in the fight against human trafficking. "We believe in using business for good," Steph explained. The café serves as a community hub where every purchase helps combat this grave issue. From locally sourced coffee to boutique items crafted by local artisans, each transaction supports the cause.
What sets Storyteller Café apart is its dual purpose. Not only does it raise awareness about human trafficking, but it also provides tangible support to survivors. The establishment offers job training, employment opportunities, and even housing in the form of apartments above the café. This holistic support system is crucial for survivors embarking on their new lives.
The idea of integrating business with social impact resonates deeply with me. As Steph highlighted, this approach allows everyone to participate in the solution, moving beyond traditional donations. It's about creating sustainable change through everyday actions.
As we wrapped up our conversation, I was moved by the potential of such innovative models to make a real difference. The Storyteller Café is more than a place for coffee; it's part of a larger narrative of empowerment and recovery for those who have endured unimaginable hardships.
Join me in applauding Steph and the Stories Foundation for their visionary work. Their approach not only changes lives but also redefines how we can use our businesses to support and uplift our communities.

Devin: What do you see as your superpower?
Abby: Having spent the last almost 20 years in journalism wearing different hats, I feel like [it’s] bringing like an ecosystems approach, of trying to look at a community–whether that community is a local community or a professional community–and trying to figure out what are the roles each of us can play?
In today's episode of the Superpowers for Good show, I had the pleasure of speaking with Abby Rapoport, the cofounder and publisher of Stranger's Guide. Abby's vision for the publication stems from a simple yet profound idea: to make the world feel smaller and more interconnected by focusing on the unique, yet universal aspects of different locales.
Abby shared, "We started Stranger's Guide to create a publication that was rooted in the idea of place and exploring how different places feel to those people who are living there." She continued, "What does it mean for the individual who's going to work, taking their kids to school, making dinner? We aim to dig into what all of those big global themes mean for daily life."
The essence of Stranger's Guide lies in its commitment to telling the stories of a place through the eyes of those who know it best—the local writers and photographers. Each issue is a deep dive into a single location, crafted by at least 80% of contributors from that area. This approach ensures that the narrative remains authentic and grounded in the community's lived experiences.
Stranger's Guide isn't just about the exotic or the familiar; it's about bridging the gap between them. It offers readers a multifaceted portrait of a place, mixing human rights, history, sports, and culture to enrich our understanding of the world. It's about seeing the big picture and the tiny, essential details through a lens that respects and values every culture's unique contributions and challenges.
By reading Stranger's Guide, we don't just learn about different parts of the world; we connect with them on a human level. It's a reminder that despite our differences, we share common threads—family, work, joy, struggle. This connection fosters empathy and, ultimately, a more compassionate worldview.
In essence, Abby's work with Stranger's Guide serves as a powerful reminder of journalism's role in society—not just to inform but to connect us. By focusing on the universal yet unique experiences of communities around the globe, Abby and her team invite us to celebrate our shared humanity. This, indeed, is journalism as a form of superpower, the kind that nurtures understanding and respect across borders.

How to Develop an Ecosystems Approach As a Superpower
Abby identifies her superpower as her Ecosystems Approach. This involves engaging deeply with communities, both local and professional, to orchestrate collaborative efforts that leverage diverse strengths and viewpoints toward common goals.
Abby's superpower lies in her ability to see and cultivate the interconnectedness within communities. Whether it's in her role at Stranger's Guide or in community volunteer work, she excels at identifying and mobilizing diverse stakeholders around shared challenges. This approach not only fosters a deeper understanding among diverse groups but also drives them towards practical, impactful collaborations.
A striking example of Abby's superpower in action can be seen in her work on the Ukraine guide for Stranger's Guide. During a particularly intense period marked by conflict and displacement, Abby and her team strategically partnered with Impact Justice to sponsor a series focused on incarceration experiences around the world, including a powerful story about a prison in Ukraine. This initiative, by weaving together the narratives of various communities, illustrated how Abby's ecosystems approach can illuminate shared human experiences across different contexts.
Abby suggests that to develop a similar capability, one should start by engaging deeply with their local community. She emphasizes the power of listening and establishing connections with people from diverse backgrounds.
