Rosalind Franklin's contributions to the discovery of the structure of DNA was unrecognized during her lifetime. Her photo 51, taken by her student, Raymond Gosling, led to the discovery of the DNA double helix. Along with her work on DNA, she also built model of the tobacco mosaic virus. The model was unveiled at the World's Fair in Brussels in 1958, she died of ovarian cancer the day before its unveiling. TMV is a single stranded RNA virus, a hypothesis first speculated by Franklin, and proven after her death.

Unfortunately, though it was known to be dangerous, the extent of how dangerous it was had not yet been determined. After several women who worked or had worked for the Radium Dial Plant started getting sick, the company was quick to cover it up. Many girls who died of radium poisoning from the working conditions of the factories were misdiagnosed as having died of syphilis, taking their lives and ruining their reputations. The determination of a handful of people led to safer working conditions and the creation of OSHA, but the unsafe conditions had already claimed the lives of many young women.
