  • Mississippi governor requests waiver to ban junk foods from SNAP program
    Several states have already received federal approval to restrict SNAP recipients from using their benefits to buy junk food and sugary drinks. Friday, Governor Tate Reeves officially requested a waiver for Mississippi. If his request is approved, processed foods that list sugar, cane sugar, corn syrup, or high fructose corn syrup as the first two ingredients will be prohibited for purchase using SNAP benefits.

  • Special legislative elections happening Tuesday.
    Voters will head to the polls for several special legislative elections in Mississippi on Tuesday. A majority of seats on ballots stem from a federal order that lawmakers redraw House districts in the Chickasaw County area, along with Senate districts in the Hattiesburg and DeSoto County areas, after it was determined that the previously used maps diluted Black voting power. The new maps resulted in elections for 14 seats.

  • Mississippi woman kills escaped monkey fearing for her children’s safety
    One of the monkeys that escaped last week after a truck overturned on a Mississippi roadway was shot and killed early Sunday by a woman who says she feared for the safety of her children. Jessica Bond Ferguson said she was alerted early Sunday by her 16-year-old son, who reported seeing a monkey in the yard outside their home near Heidelberg. Bond Ferguson said she and other residents had been warned about diseases that the escaped monkeys carried, so she fired her gun. The Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks took possession of the monkey, the sheriff’s office said.
