The Mississippi Department of Revenue is warning Mississippians about a scam. There's been a surge in the number of residents receiving texts and calls demanding payment for outstanding tolls, fines, and unpaid traffic tickets. The DOR is warning folks not to click or respond to those messages and to delete any that may have been sent. Plus, a known Bloods street gang member was arrested on October 9 after a search of his home in Moss Point. 45-year-old Linquin Frank Reid was charged with three counts of sale of a controlled substance, being a felon in possession of a firearm, and several other charges.

Cruisin' the Coast has officially broken its registration record! There were 10,334 cars that officially registered this year, and that number doesn't include the thousands of drivers who don't register but still join in the fun. Cruisin' the Coast has been voted the best car show in the U.S. for six straight years. Next year, cruisers will celebrate the event's 30th anniversary.

A suspect is charged with kidnapping a 12-year-old girl from Adams County over the weekend. Victor Alfonso Xol Mez was taken into custody in Clayton, La., by the Concordia Parish Sheriff’s Office on Sunday. Mez is accused of kidnapping Elizabeth Faith Green, who was reported missing after last being seen at a residence on Duck Pond Road in Natchez on Saturday around 11 p.m. Plus, Jackson police are looking for suspects in a shooting on Sunday. Investigators say three people, including a six-year-old, were inside a gray Honda SUV around 4:30 p.m. near Highway 49 when someone opened fire, hitting the female passenger in the head. The victim is in serious condition.

Mississippi has experienced remarkable growth in education over the past decade, with 98% of school districts now earning a C or higher. Our state's national ranking for K-12 achievement has climbed from 50th to 16th. In a recent op-ed, Bradley Roberson, the Superintendent of the Oxford School District, argues that now is not the time to introduce school choice. Roberson writes that rather than expanding programs that siphon resources away from public schools, we should continue building on the practices that have moved Mississippi from the bottom of national rankings to one of the most improved states in the country.

Eight Mississippi Lottery players turned their non-winning scratch-off tickets into big wins last week. A combined total of $980,000 was awarded in the 2nd Chance promotional drawings held on Oct. 9. Three winners--one in Saltillo, another in Aberdeen, and a third from Amory--won $200,000 from scratch-off tickets. The Powerball jackpot for Monday night's drawing is at $258 million with a cash value of $120.8 million. The Mega Millions jackpot for Tuesday night's drawing is at $600 million with a cash value of $277.2 million. The Mississippi Match 5 jackpot for the daily drawing is at $62,000.

This Saturday's edition of ESPN's College GameDay is heading to Athens for a top-10 matchup between Ole Miss and Georgia.

The latest AP Top 25 has undefeated Ole Miss at No. 5 and a one-loss Georgia team at No. 9. Kickoff from inside Sanford Stadium is set for 2:30. It will also be broadcast on participating SuperTalk Mississippi stations. Mississippi State will return to action after being off this past weekend, taking the field against Florida in The Swamp. Southern Miss will travel to Louisiana.

It was a deadly weekend across Mississippi, with several unrelated shootings ending in at least nine deaths and a long list of injuries.

On Friday night, a shooting happened on campus at Heidelberg High School, where two victims, including an expectant mother, were found deceased. A person of interest was taken into custody there. At South Delta High School in Rolling Fork, one person was injured, with two suspects already in custody. In Leland, a mass shooting happened at a block party following Leland High School's homecoming football game. Six people are dead, and the FBI has stepped in to try to find those responsible. Another person was killed and two others were injured in a Saturday evening shooting on the campus of Alcorn State.

It will be a sunny start to the week across Mississippi with highs in the 80s.
