State leaders from Mississippi attended the White House State Leadership Conference earlier this week. Senator Nicole Akins-Boyd told us the event allows local dignitaries to visit with federal leaders and policy advisors.

A Southaven man has been sentenced to over 30 years in prison for a violent string of crimes that began in July of 2024. 21-year-old Detrich Neal pled guilty to attempted murder and armed robbery. According to police, Neal robbed a man at gunpoint at Dorchester Apartments in July, stealing the victim's firearm and remaining at large for several months. In October, he spotted the same victim at a gas station, pulled in front of his vehicle, jumped out, and fired three rounds directly into the victim's windshield. The victim was struck twice in the face but managed to survive.

Officials are once again warning Mississippians to avoid falling prey to text message scams. Department of Public Safety Commissioner Sean Tindell said that a message has been making the rounds accusing residents of having traffic tickets that had yet to be paid. The message threatens the recipient with certain fines, including suspension of driving privileges, prosecution, and interest tacked onto the cost of the ticket.

The National Weather Service downgraded Invest 93 on Wednesday, citing significantly reduced wind speeds and improved atmospheric conditions. Emergency services remain on standby due to the threat of flooding. Harrison County Emergency Management Director Matt Stratton told us what residents in southern Mississippi can expect.

Shark Week 2025 is back for its 37th year on the Discovery Channel starting on Sunday. Jill Hendon, the Director of the USM Center for Fisheries Research and Development, told us there are typically 9 species that hang out regularly in the Mississippi Sound and the surrounding Barrier Islands.

Jackson police are warning business owners of a scam being perpetrated in the area. An individual has been calling businesses, particularly gas stations, and claiming to be a City of Jackson employee. The caller advises the owner or employee of the company that they are violating a city ordinance regarding their property maintenance, such as grass not being cut. The caller states that the city is imposing a $1500.00 fine per day until the grass is cut. If the intended victim tells the scammer they can't have the grass cut immediately, the caller will offer to send someone out to do it. But they charge the business owner for the service.

State Treasurer David McRae has returned nearly $150 million to Mississippians through the unclaimed money program, more than any Treasurer in state history. Earlier this month, McRae announced that the state treasury will require proof of citizenship to file an unclaimed money return.

State lawmakers have vowed to make K-12 education policy one of their main priorities in the 2026 legislative session. House Speaker Jason White plans to propose a single, comprehensive education reform package that encompasses all their key priorities, including the closure and consolidation of some schools.
