Mississippi shrimpers are facing a tenuous market with international competition and new tariffs coming down the line from the Trump Administration.

One helipad at Camp Shelby's Joint Force Training Center in Hattiesburg will be dedicated to Chief Warrant Officer Derek Abbott, while another will be dedicated to Chief Warrant Officer Bryan Zemek during a ceremony on Saturday after the two passed away in a training flight crash in 2024.

In the race for Jackson mayor, state Sen. John Horhn and incumbent Chokwe Antar Lumumba are heading to a runoff after Tuesday’s Democratic primary. We caught up with Horhn on Friday to talk about how he led the way with nearly 49% of the vote.

Jackson police are still looking for a suspect, or suspects, in a shooting at a home in the 4600 block of Wear Avenue. Officers arrived at the home on Thursday, though the victim had been shot Wednesday night and is being treated for non-life-threatening injuries. Plus, Jackson police are searching for the suspect behind a Facebook Marketplace scam. 37-year-old Kendrick Stubbs allegedly arranged to meet an individual selling their vehicle on March 12 and paid him with a counterfeit check. Then, Stubbs posted the vehicle on Marketplace and sold it to another person the following day. After that transaction was completed, Stubbs followed his second victim home and stole the vehicle back.

Some U.S. shrimp producers are optimistic about President Trump's tariff plan. The newly-enacted tariffs target the six largest suppliers of foreign shrimp, a move U-S shrimpers say will boost domestic production.

As of Tuesday, the Dept. of Government Efficiency, or DOGE, claims to have saved $140 billion, equating to less than $870 per taxpayer. Congressman Michael Guest believes a lot of the fraud and waste was intentionally concealed. President Trump and Elon Musk have been teasing the idea of turning DOGE's savings into stimulus checks for Americans. Trump also suggested using the savings to pay down the federal debt.

Mississippi is ranked second in the nation for GDP growth, an accomplishment Governor Tate Reeves calls a big win for the state and the people who live here. A report from the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Bureau of Economic Analysis shows that agriculture, forestry, fishing, and hunting were major contributors. Mississippi placed second nationally in that sector, with a growth rate of 1.17%. There's also been an increase in manufacturing, where Mississippi placed 8th overall in the nation with a .41% increase. Mississippi ranked first in net earnings and was one of only four states that saw a decrease in government assistance payments.

The No. 9 Ole Miss baseball team changed its schedule due to bad weather in Lexington, Kentucky. The teams will play a doubleheader Friday at 2 p.m. and then finish the series at 1 p.m. on Saturday for Game 3. All three matchups are set to air on SEC Network+ and participating SuperTalk Mississippi stations. No. 13 Southern Miss will play Marshall in a three-game series starting on Friday at 5 p.m. Play continues Saturday at 3 p.m., and Sunday at 11 a.m. Mississippi State is hosting a weekend series with South Carolina on Friday at 6 p.m. They'll play again on Saturday at 2 p.m. The final game will be Sunday at 1 p.m.

The Mississippi Museum of Natural Science is celebrating the 25th anniversary of NatureFEST on Saturday. Their event planner, Nicole Smith, told us there will be plenty for families to enjoy between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
