Three Mississippians were killed during a bout of severe weather on Tuesday. According to the latest update from MEMA, one death occurred in Clarke County and 2 in Madison County. The National Weather Service has confirmed that an EF-1 tornado with peak winds of 100 mph touched down in George County at 7:55 p.m. near the intersection of Marshall Smith Road and Cooks Corner Road.

President Trump is reportedly set to issue an executive order aimed at eliminating the Dept. of Education, a move that State Auditor Shad White called a powerful step toward putting decisions about what is taught in schools closer to parents. In a social media post, State Auditor Shad White suggested that Mississippi should abolish the State Board of Education. He also believes the state superintendent of education should be appointed by the governor so that parents could hold a democratically elected representative accountable.

A bill that would legalize mobile sports betting in Mississippi is still alive but seems to be on life support. Tuesday, the Senate Gaming Committee allowed the MS Mobile Sports Wagering Act to die, but the House Gaming Committee gutted the Senate bills and inserted the exact language of their bill into both. Jay McDaniel, the Executive Director of the Mississippi Gaming Commission, told us the illegal gambling market is getting bigger every day, and our state is losing out on that income.

One person was killed in a shooting in the 3500 block of Sunset Drive in Jackson on Wednesday. The victim has been identified as 21-year-old Jakendrick Bass. Police are still looking for suspects. Plus, one of several suspects involved in a shootout in Jackson suffered non-life-threatening injuries. According to police, the owner of a Dodge Durango discovered four people inside his SUV. There was an exchange of gunfire. The victim was shot but is expected to make a full recovery. One of the suspects turned up at a hospital later with three gunshot wounds.

All 3 Mississippi Public Service Commissioners will attend a town hall meeting in Holly Springs to address concerns with the Holly Springs Utility Department. In January, Northern District Public Service Commissioner Chris Brown told us it is common for utility department customers to go without power for hours, sometimes days. The meeting was organized by TVMO Community News. It will be held on Friday, March 21 at the Marshall County Courtroom B starting at 6 p.m.

A Canton police officer suffered two broken ankles when he was hit by several suspects in a stolen vehicle early Sunday morning. The suspects allegedly stole a Chevy Traverse from Canton Estate Apartments shortly after midnight. Officers spotted the vehicle and tried to pull the driver over, but the suspects led police on a chase that ended when they ran a stop sign and crashed into Sgt. Dwan Harris.

A double-murder suspect is in custody after a four-hour standoff with police in Pascagoula on Wednesday. Officers were called to a home on Krebs Avenue for a fight. When they arrived at the scene, officers allegedly saw 39-year-old Darold Sim Payne run into the house, barricading himself. Two people were found dead inside the home. Their identities will be released once their next of kin is notified.
