Supreme Court Wayfair Sales Tax Case Explained

Listen Later

Late last month, the U.S. Supreme Court decided the historic Wayfair case, which will have cascading consequences for the online retail and e-commerce industries and ultimately effect everyone that shops online. The issue that was up for deciding was whether online retailers have to collect sales (or use) tax for online purchases. We all know how this works when shopping "off line" because there is a sales receipt wherein state and possibly local sales tax is added to your bill, collected by the shop, and eventually paid over to the State or local entity. For a long time, though, depending on where you did your online shopping (and where that retailer was located), you may not have seen that same sales tax line on your receipt. On today's show, Ralph breaks down the Wayfair decision and how it will effect online e-commerce businesses and their customers.
