When you bring your needs to God, you know that he will hear you, you even trust that he may grant you what you are asking. And as you are praying, you may have subtle expectations of how he may bring that prayer about. Elijah may have had the same thoughts, but he never would've expected that God would provide for him with ravens! From this great account from 1 Kings, we learn that God provides, in his way, not ours.

The Holy Spirit was alive and active in the beginning as he hovered over the waters of the deep. The Holy Spirit was active when he brought about the conception of Jesus. The Holy Spirit was active when he appeared on the disciples at Pentecost. Is the Holy Spirit still active and working today?

Expectations play a major role in your life, whether you realize it or not. And those expectations can be a heavy burden; they can wear you down. However, Christ offers rest and relief in what he has done. He lifts that burden off of your shoulders.

There are so many voices in this world and they all have different motives and agendas. How do you know which of these voices to listen to? That's an important question because you are influenced by the voices that you listen to. Jesus wants you to listen to him, your Good Shepherd. You know that you can trust your Good Shepherd's voice because your Good Shepherd laid down his life for his sheep, just like he said he would. He will always tell you the truth and he cares deeply about you.

The Apostle Paul does two things in this text - he gives thanks and he encourages. We can all do exactly as the Apostle Paul did. We can give thanks for the faith of our fellow believers. We can find the encouragement that their faith brings us. And we can take the Apostle Paul's words seriously when he says "stand firm and hold fast."

The truths of Scripture provide lasting comfort. The comfort that God had for Joshua and the Israelites is a comfort that he still has for his people - God goes before you and God goes with you. Thomas doubted what the disciples had told him - they had seen the Risen Jesus! But Thomas wasn't going to believe unless he saw. Well, Jesus gave him the opportunity, he showed him his hands and his side. After seeing this, Thomas believed. In some ways, we may envy Thomas, he got to see. But Jesus says, "Blessed are those who have not seen, and yet have believed."

The Risen Jesus makes all the difference in life and as you face death. Without Jesus, death still has a sting. But because Jesus has been raised, death has lost its sting.

Could you do what God had asked Abraham to do? God asked Abraham to give up his only son. Does that sound familiar? How come when it comes to God, we assume it was somehow easier for him to give up his one and only Son? Yet, God gave up his Son and he did it willingly, without a second thought. You know why? He loves you!
