Side Project - General Hospital (3-21-1984)

Strap yourself in the medi-vac because this week on Surf Dudes, we're flying back in time to visit General Hospital. The year is 1983. There is promise in the world. The power suits have shoulder pads, the hairlines dip too far down foreheads and purchasing a home for your new family had a down payment of, like, $35.

This hospital-less episode of the acclaimed soap opera finds a central thread of a band shooting their debut music video amongst a lot of other random-ass storylines. Uncle Jessie and the evil doctor from Melrose Place lead this band but are accused of stealing their hit song from a former member! RELATABLE.

James is really locked into the subplot involving a cabin purchase and Peat is wondering how long he had to wait for his goddamned tuna melt while the waitress files for divorce at her other table. But, we are both agreed that Uncle Jessie is boinking their manager. Big thanks to our listener Liz for cueing us into this episode of Side Project!

Season 4 Episode 5: Fallen Idol

Strap in, blokes and birds. On this toilet-water-swirling-backwards of an episode of California Dreams, Jake meets his guitar hero only to find out that God doesn't look too fondly on worshipping other idols before him. This Aussie goes way down under and steals one of the Dreams’ songs!

James and Peat get real about how hard it is to book a guest for this podcast. We had THREE guests bail on this episode, seemingly after watching the episode. They also both have horrendous Australian accents so that MAY have something to do with it. It all worked out though. Peat tries to figure out the waiter named Headcheese and James gives the first ever Trifecta Award! See you at Sharkey's!!

Season 4 Episode 4: The Dateless Game

Oh boy… a game show episode. Today, on Surf Dudes with Attitude, we stick a microphone in the face of California Dreams and demand an explanation. The gang somehow ends up on a dating show where Sly is the front runner, Jake speaks with a fake accent and Mark is somehow a viable contestant. We bring in the big guns here to make sense of all of it by conversing with Corey Rotic, a self confessed and obsessed CD superfan. He's got a tattoo of the logo and could probably be convinced that Pizza Gate was happening underneath Sharkey's.

James rightfully draws parallels to the real Dating Game murderer, Peat has some tough questions about Mark and Corey corrects all of our glaring omissions from year's past. There's no music in this episode, but we do have double the Jake! See you at Sharkey's!!

Season 4 Episode 3: Principal Tiffani

Attention curriculum administrators: this episode of California Dreams will be triggering. This week, the Surf Dudes welcome back one of our favorite guests, Adam from Tubi Treasures, to fulfill a year long promise. See, last year, Adam came on for episode 3x4 but he's dyslexic and watched 4x3, thus future-promising loyalty to us to ALSO come on and talk about this episode. WHAT A LUCKY GUY!

For whatever reason, Tiff is named school principal for a week. We can only guess her transcripts have been fraudulent forged and all records of her addiction issues and stint in rehab has been disappeared. Her past demons come back and the power goes quickly to her head. Can she keep it all together without alienating her friends and disappointing the psychiatrist from the Terminator franchise, Earl Bowen??

James runs a victory lap seeing Tiff spin out of control, after diagnosing her very early on. Adam shares his plans to name his litter of children after every character from this show. Peat was really hoping we could see a scene of a janitor getting fired due to budget cuts and Tiff’s misuse of the treasury funds. Sigh... there's always next semester. See you at Sharkey’s!!

Season 4 Episode 2: Be My Valentine

Calling all love-scorned Aquarius signs! In this unhinged episode of California Dreams, we check in on the gang mere MOMENTS after Jake has dumped Lorena for his old flame, Tiffany. She must have suffered some Transient Global Amnesia (TGA) due to her heartbreak because it's not mentioned ONCE, despite it being a Valentine's Day episode.

Tony and Sam prematurely get engaged and have a crazy race-baiting fantasy while the rest of the gang equally messes up this fairly simple commercial holiday. We do get a band performance at least. Get your insulin ready though because this is the most sweet and sappy song we've heard yet from this teenage quintet.

James goes full Jacob Collier on the band's G to C and back to G chord song structure while Peat wonders they have a giant globe in their loft if they never leave their half mile radius. We welcome back George Howell to help us make sense of Cupid's targets this week. See you at Sharkey’s!!

Season 4 Episode 1: Two Too Much

Hey there, Twinkle Toes! Surf Dudes is back after a spell. We had a busy summer with life and music but knew we would always come crawling back to our dark mistress, California Dreams. In this season kickoff, we are forced to go without any melody in a band-less plot revolving around a high school ballet class and a very forced love triangle with Jake, Tiff and Lorena. Sly and Mark are conning their way to getting some spandexed tail and Sam, I guess, is also in this episode. Also, buckle up, we got a black and white dream sequence incoming.

James curses his high school for not offering ballet class and Peat is still unconvinced that a large scale newspaper organization would cover a ballet performance from a high school class three days into a new semester. See you at Sharkey’s!!

Hey there, Olympians! On this very special episode (yes, another one), we find Tiffani turning to steroids to help give her an edge for the National Volleyball Tryouts. Not sure why we are capitalizing that but it seems like a big deal! Also, it took three whole seasons to figure out that in the Latin alphabet, Tiffani ends with an I. Hmm… The rest of the gang doesn’t help as they keep pressuring TIff to make the cut, along with a really problematic head coach. There’s a silly subplot of the gang having a stud contest to help cut the tension of everyone’s favorite bassist JUICING, but it’s barely worth mentioning outside of Mark being a big DORK. Will all Tiff’s unbridled rage, nursed from mommy abandonment issues and scorn from a past relationship with the local heartbreaker Jake, finally boil over at the surface and explode? The mercury has been cooking for a long time and we finally see the tea kettle scream!

James and Peat are welcomed by our lovely friends, Imran and Sofia, once again from the Dance of Joy Podcast. We promised them that if they showed us theirs, we would show them ours. They help us make sense of all this unchecked aggression in the seemingly quaint lower California oceanside town.. Do we get any music??? Tune in to find out.

Do you hear those church bells? This isn’t a rhetorical question. It’s unfortunately a major plot device in this week's episode of SIDE PROJECT. We whisk ourselves away on our Cessna plane to Connecticut to catch up with Rory and Lorelei on Gilmore Girls. Rory’s best friend, Lane, has a band that gets an offer to play CBGB’s in New York City. The rest of the episode has a disturbing amount of subplots that we do our best to navigate. We bring back our resident Gilmore Gal Sofia Javed to help us make sense of this cultural phenomenon from the late aughts. 

Why did Adam Brody leave the band? Why is Sebastian Bach allowed anywhere near children? Did they find a real green room to shoot in? And does Luke ever take off his ball cap during lovemaking? Ahoy there, fellow urban explorers! This is the second episode of California Dreams this season that hinted that our gang loves scavenger hunts more than being in a band. LAME!  But, here we are, to solve all the riddles on Surf Dudes with Attitude. After a well paying (and increasingly rare) gig on the pier, the gang is manipulated into a wild goose chase by Jake and Lorena. The incredibly toxic couple is trying to prove that money will ruin friendships and lead to distrust! The teenage harbingers marionette the rest of the gang to several locations with phony clues and promises of a big booty. And the big wager for their unnecessary and cruel bet? A kiss… between a well established couple. Ugh.

James and Peat try to stay positive in the new song we do get to hear. They debate on whether Tiff is playing out of a guitar or bass amp and Peat makes a wild confession that he doesn’t dictate his life according to his favorite pizza restaurant. As we wind down the season, we just want to thank everyone that is still listening and being on this fun ride of ours! Next week, we have a kick-ass SIDE PROJECT episode where we are zipping off to Connecticut to see how the other half lives with Gilmore Girls! Rory’s best friend, Lane, has a band (with Sebastian Bach for some reason) and they get a chance to play at CBGB’s. So, obviously… we got thoughts. See you at Luke’s Diner!!
