Worship according to God's word is one the central tenets of Reformed Theology. Just because something is not forbidden, does not necessarily mean it is acceptable during direct worship to God on Sundays. God has regulated in His word how He wishes to be worshipped. This worship is centred around the Word of God- singing, praying, reading, preaching, and partaking.

In Psalm 89, the Psalmists recounts God's faithful rule over creation and His faithful promise to David. But the Psalmist is confused because it seems God is not being faithful to His promises and it seems as if He has forsaken the Davidic Covenant. The rest of the Psalter, and the New Testament, answers this question as God does not change but demonstrates His lovingkindness in the Messiah, Jesus Christ.

The audience shifts from the Pharisees to the crowds and then to the disciples. The crowds receive a parable indicating it is only what comes out of a man that defiles him. Privately, the disciples ask Jesus the meaning of the parable. Jesus explains to them that a wicked heart is what defiles a man, not some outward ritual. Only Jesus provides such revelation to His people.

Paul gives specific instruction for conduct in the church for each gender. Men ought to pray and women ought to adorn themselves with godliness. Furthermore, women are not permitted to have authority nor teach over men. This is contrary to modern feminism, but the Bible is explicit about the roles of women in the church. But there is hope for all as there is salvation in the child-bearing.

The Pharisees are offended by the disciples failure to comply with their doctrines of men. Jesus challenges them for their adherence to the doctrines of men instead of the commandments of God. Though they may appear holy, their hearts are full of sin, which is far more offense than whether or not someone has clean hands.

Freedom in Christ finds its basis in the gospel of Christ. A Christian's liberty is found in being pardoned from sin, released from the dominion of sin, having access to God, and engaging in joyful obedience. License and sin abuses Christian liberty, because Christian are no longer condemned by the law, but can joyfully serve God all the days of their lives. Because of this gospel, God alone is the LORD of the conscience and enforcing doctrines of man destroys liberty.

Psalm 2 contains the message for the rest of the Psalter. This message is that the Messiah reigns. Kingdoms may rebel against God, but their might is weak and they are no match for the Davidic King.
