August 24, 2024 66. We felt like we had failed our surrogate Laura
Candice and her partner, Robert, from Adelaide became parents to their daughter (Abigail) in December 2023. Abby was carried by surrogate Laura who was previously a stranger. At 4 years old, Candice was diagnosed with cancer: non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. Due to the radiation therapy and multiple cases of pneumonia she now has only 30% lung capacity and doctors advised her that she would need a surrogate to become a mum.

I have been closely involved in the Australian surrogacy community since 2016 and am responsible for the day-to-day administration of Surrogacy Australia's Support Service (SASS).
I’m passionate about the surrogacy community (the village) and that people should be able to navigate surrogacy in Australia without being on Facebook. That was part of our motivation for creating SASS, the monthly zoom catch ups and the free webinars. Within SASS we have a Mentor program, so you can be connected with a peer to meet in person and to ask questions without fear of online judgement.

August 11, 2024 65. I did every breastfeed for the first 9 days (and pumped milk for 5.5 months)
Laura and husband, Justin, live in Adelaide with their 3 children and she birthed a little girl, Abigail, as a surrogate in December 2023. The parents, Candice and Robert, were previously strangers whom they met through the facebook communities. Laura expressed milk for 5.5 months and even continued to do some direct feeds until 4.5 months. Their team had roadblocks along the way so it took them a few years to get to birth.

July 22, 2024 62. A single, male Intended Parent (IP) - it’s not a journey for the timid
Sam is a trail blazer as one of the first men to become a single dad through surrogacy in Melbourne. His daughter, Hazel, was born in January 2024. It was traditional surrogacy, meaning his surrogate was also the egg donor. They were previously strangers but met through friends of friends during the first lockdown break of 2020 - now friends for life!

June 30, 2024 60. It wasn’t worth it - I would not go back and have this experience again
Zoe birthed a little boy as a surrogate in Wollongong in October 2018 for her sister and brother in law who live in New Zealand. Unfortunately the relationship dissolved during the pregnancy and post birth. Surrogacy has had a huge impact on her life, contributing to the strains in her now separated marriage, and she wants to share her story so future surrogates and Intended Parents can be aware of the challenges.

June 24, 2024 59. When surrogacy did not work out the first (or second) time
Intended Parents, Dan and Stu who live in Sydney but are originally from Yorkshire, did find a surrogate and began the journey with her and her family. Their surrogacy team went through the counselling and legal process, however due to a change in her family situation, the surrogate was no longer able to continue.
Although it took a lot to put themselves back out there to look for another surrogate, Dan and Stu have learnt a lot about themselves and the process and want to share their story to help others.

June 16, 2024 58. It’s such an intimate experience - you need love and trust
Menaka's SASS team is the first that we have supported from their introduction (or match) with their surrogate through to birth and now beyond for a year. Menaka and her husband, Simon, from the Gold Coast became parents to their daughter Isabelle in October 2023. Isabelle was carried by surrogate Nikita, who lives outside of Brisbane, who was previously a stranger and now a lifelong friend. It was a very long journey to parenthood with 7 years of IVF, myomectomy surgery, joining SASS in 2019 and 2 years later being introduced to Nikita and her family. Definitely a marathon not a sprint!

Yes, but it also depends who that question is directed to. The Intended Parents (IPs) will eventually be the legal parents of their child, however there is a process to follow in Australia to get to that point.
