I’m passionate about the surrogacy community (the village) and that people should be able to navigate surrogacy in Australia without being on Facebook. That was part of our motivation for creating SASS, the monthly zoom catch ups and the free webinars. Within SASS we have a Mentor program, so you can be connected with a peer to meet in person and to ask questions without fear of online judgement.

December 25, 2023 35. If you really believe you are meant to be a mother it can happen - it just might not be the way you thought it would be
Angela and husband Sandro from Melbourne, became parents to their daughter (Milana) in November 2016. Milana was carried by surrogate Cindy, who was previously a stranger, and was also created using donor eggs from Melinda whom they met through Egg Donation Australia. It was a very long journey to parenthood with Angela birthing 2 stillbirths at 24 weeks and 2 miscarriages before a 4 year surrogacy journey with 5 embryo transfers to Cindy (one was a miscarriage at 8 weeks). A very determined surrogacy team!

December 17, 2023 34. If I could be paid, I would consider being a surrogate again
Talitha birthed as a surrogate on the Sunshine Coast on New Years Day 2023 for a couple who were previously friends. Talitha expressed milk for little Leo for 9 weeks, as well as direct feeding for the first 3 days until her milk came in. Their IPs, Sindia and Tom, are from Brisbane and Talitha and her husband, Barton, were friends with Dad Tom long before surrogacy.

December 10, 2023 32. Do counselling (during pregnancy) - do more than you need to
Nathan and Troy, from Sydney, became parents to their son (Noah) in May 2023. They are actually a SASS team and came to us already self matched. Noah was carried by their surrogate Amy, who has been friends with Nathan since high school. They navigated a journey with some distance (Sydney to the Central Coast) and moved to stay closer to Amy and her family from a month before birth to 8 months post birth. Their embryos were made in Utah using an egg donor from a clinic in the US, so they have many experiences on which to draw insights.

December 03, 2023 31. Postnatal depression as a surrogate
Lee birthed as a surrogate in Adelaide in June 2019. She carried for her cousin Hannah, who is a single mum, and they had a little girl, Imara. Lee has been an active member of the Adelaide surrogacy community, spoken at surrogacy seminars and has supported many of her surro sisters through their journeys.

We hear from Narelle as she explores the findings of her research:
❤️ Is TS (Traditional surrogacy) harder on the surrogacy relationship?

💛 How do TS/GS perceive the surrogate pregnancy compared to their own?
💚 Do TS have a harder time relinquishing the baby?

Narelle is a Brisbane-based, ANZICA accredited, Clinical and Health Psychologist specialising in the perinatal field with many years of experience of surrogacy cases. She has completed a Churchill fellowship which took her around the world to study surrogacy practice in the USA, Canada, Russia and South-east Asia.
At her practice, Lotus Health and Psychology, Narelle leads a team of expertly trained perinatal specialists to support people through pre-conception, pregnancy and into parenthood.

November 19, 2023 28. Letting go as an IP - you’re not in control
Hannah became a mum through surrogacy in June 2019. Her daughter, Imara, was carried and birthed by Lee, who is Hannah's cousin. Hannah is a midwife and was diagnosed with MRKH in her early 20s, which essentially means she was born without a uterus.
Hannah has been a Mentor with SASS, especially for single mums, and has supported many new Intended Parents at the beginning of their journey.
At the time this podcast goes to air, November 2023, I can tell you that Hannah is due to be a mum for the second time in early 2024. She is expecting another girl but with a different surrogate. Hannah met a new surrogate, previously a stranger, and it just goes to show having two children through surrogacy in Australia can be a reality.
Hannah can be heard (with 2 others) on a webinar episode about Inducing Lactation. These are 3 mothers through Australian surrogacy who were able to directly breastfeed their babies. Watch on ⁠youtube⁠ or listen in episode 50.

November 12, 2023 27. What if I did surrogacy for another couple and it’s worse?
Jess and husband, Jayden, live in Adelaide with their 2 girls and she has birthed another 2 girls as a surrogate, Amalia in May 2020 and Oriana in July 2023. The dads, Baden and Nelson, previously strangers and now friends for life, live in QLD so their journey was long distance and in the peak of Covid the first time.
