Regarding the climate and resource crisis, the renovation of the building stock plays a key role. In this context, it is necessary to adapt existing buildings to future regenerative energy systems. Specific building refurbishment strategies are the decisive step to preserve their “resource-ecological” but also its “building-cultural” potential. The architectural and the energetic heritage must be equally recognized and integratively activated in order to ensure the acceptance regarding its function, beauty, and social aspects in the long term. In this way, a sustainably understood building culture will become an essential pillar of a climate-neutral building sector.

Sustainable Materials Management presents an effective approach to reduce environmental and climate change impacts and preserving natural capitals, hence helping to ensure sustainability.  This talk will introduce its concept, implications, and benefits.  Cases will be used to illustrate plausible ways of practice and their merits.

About the speaker: Dr. Vincent Chao is an internationally known expert on sustainability-related subjects. In the past 40 years, he has held executive positions in academic and research institutions, and an environmental consultant company; senior positions in a Crown waste management corporation and engineering companies in Canada. His services span a wide region covering North America, Europe, and Asia. He is a registered chemical engineer and has a Ph.D. degree in environmental engineering.
